International Duty

There’s a Western Conference Title on the LineMinnesota United stunned Sporting KC at Children’s Mercy Park, securing both the Loons’ first points there this year and a trip to the Western Conference Final Monday evening. MNUFC will face off against the Sounders – the 2019 MLS Cup winners – who have amassed a record of 9-0-0 in the playoffs under head coach Brian Schmetzer’s direction at Lumen Field. Seattle edged out FC Dallas in a 1-0 win with a set piece goal by Shane O’Neill sealing the deal. The Sounders are sound – with Nicolas Lodeiro, Raul Ruidiaz and Jordan Morris posing lethal threats in the final third – yet beatable. It’s a battle of experience versus persistence. The Loons’ invincible energy and undeniable groove might just be enough to forge yet another piece of Minnesota United history this year and upend the current favorites for the Cup.

3-0 Win: A 2020 Playoff TrendMinnesota United came into their Western Conference Semifinal matchup with Sporting Kansas City having already bettered their playoff performance from 2019 by winning in the first round. But facing the top seed in the conference, on the road, in a stadium where they had never gotten so much as a point and had only scored one goal in the last four years? Nothing to do but go get a clean sheet, three-goal win, it seems. After weathering a strong opening salvo by the home side, the Loons took off with an opening goal by Kevin Molino in the 27th minute and never looked back, pushing it to 3-0 by the half and shutting it down in the second to book a trip to Seattle for the Western Conference Final.

MNUFC GAME NOTES

• This will be the first MLS Cup Playoff meeting between Minnesota and Seattle and the first time they face each other this year.

• The last time Minnesota and Seattle met in the postseason was the 2003 USL A-League Western Conference Final. The Minnesota Thunder defeated the Sounders 2-0 on aggregate. MNUFC Director of Player Personnel Amos Magee appeared in both legs of the series for the Thunder.

• Minnesota has reached the Conference Finals for the first time in club history following a 3-0 win over first-place Sporting Kansas City.

• The win over Sporting KC was the Loons’ first-ever road win in the MLS Cup Playoffs.

• Emanuel Reynoso has provided three assists in back-to-back games. He is the first player in MLS Cup Playoff history to have at least three assists in multiple games.

• Reynoso’s six assists tie him for the single-season record in the MLS Cup Playoffs.

• Reynoso has gotten an assist in his last five appearances, with a total of 10 in that stretch.

• Bakaye Dibassy scored his first MLS goal with a header in the 39th minute.

• Kevin Molino scored two of the Loons’ three goals against SKC. Molino has scored multiple goals in his last three appearances.

• Dayne St. Clair made four saves to keep a clean sheet in the Conference Semifinal. He has shutout opponents in both MLS Cup Playoff games this year.

• St. Clair has not allowed a goal in the last 308 minutes, going back to November 4 against Chicago Fire FC. This is the second-longest shutout streak in club history, just 41 minutes behind the record mark he set in October.

• This is Seattle’s fourth appearance in the Western Conference Final in the last five years.

• Seattle won the 2019 MLS Cup, defeating Toronto FC 3-1 at home.

• The Loons are 0-5-1 against Sounders FC since joining MLS. The one draw came at Allianz Field on May 4, 2019 with both teams scoring one goal.

MNUFC GAME NOTES

2015 MINNESOTA UNITED FC GOAL MAPMINNESOTA UNITED NEWS AND NOTES

Recap: Minnesota United Advances to Western Conference FinalsMinnesota United came into their Western Conference Semifinal matchup with Sporting Kansas City having already bettered their playoff performance from 2019 by winning in the first round.

Head Coach Adrian Heath on how proud he was of the result and performance in Kansas City“After the first 10 minutes, I thought we were outstanding for the rest of the game. I took as much pleasure in the fact that in the second half, we came under pressure, I can’t really remember them creating an opening. A clear opening. So, that was good. Very resolute. Great attitude to defend the goal, not to give anything away. But, as I said to the guys, we could have been one, two down within five or six minutes. Then, that changes the whole complex of the game. There’s things from the game that we can work on and think about, but, we’re all really delighted with the group and pleased that some of our approach play got the finishing touch for what was some great football at times.”

Midfielder Osvaldo Alonso on playing in 12 straight postseasons and how the mentality changes from the regular season“Yea, the mentality does shift a little bit. We know that playoff games are life or death. If you lose, you go home and we can’t lose here, there’s always extratime to think about. In the regular season, you have games where you can play poorly and lose but there are always more games where you can find results to keep advancing. Here in the postseason, if you lose a game, you go home. So the mentality is different, we know this team is getting better every day. I’m pleased with what we gave in the last match, to get to the conference final”

Midfielder Emanuel Reynoso on being the first player in MLS history with three assists in two consecutive playoff games“First, please for the team, we’re doing things really well. For me, as a midfielder, it makes my job easy when we have forwards and we can give a good pass and we can give them good assists. It makes it easier for us because they convert and playing well up top. So we need to keep things the same and for those behind them, try to keep assisting and helping them score the goals.”

StorylinesThere’s facing your former club, and then there’s what Osvaldo Alonso’s about to do. Alonso became a mainstay almost immediately upon joining the Seattle Sounders, appearing in 28 of 29 games between the regular season and playoffs in 2009, including playing 90 minutes in the Final of the U.S. Open Cup, which Seattle won. During Alonso’s tenure as captain there, the Sounders won the Supporters’ Shield (2014), MLS Cup (2016) and three more U.S. Open Cups (2010, 2011, 2014). Upon his return to the then-CenturyLink Field in 2019, his former team honored him in a ceremony before the game. His main priority in the game will be nothing less than shutting down his former teammate and the Sounders’ most dangerous weapon, Nicolas Lodeiro. In short, you couldn’t script a better high stakes game than a Western Conference Final between Seattle and MNUFC for Alonso.

Between Seattle’s Round of 16 exit from the MLS Is Back Tournament and the travel restrictions forced by COVID-19, the Loons and the Sounders have yet to face each other this season. History, unfortunately, does not favor MNUFC. In their MLS history, Minnesota has conceded 13 goals while only scoring four times, and their lone positive result was a 1-1 draw at Allianz Field in May of 2019. In their last game against each other on Decision Day of 2019, the Loons lost 1-0 in Seattle, but it goes without saying that that was a very different team. Angelo Rodriguez started up top and the currently red-hot Kevin Molino and Robin Lod came off the bench late. As a result, the two teams are about as unfamiliar with each other as SKC and MNUFC were familiar. The scouting departments are sure to have their hands full as they pore over tape in the coming days.

Since Luis Amarilla’s promising 2020 was cut short by injury, Minnesota have cast about for a solution at forward. Mason Toye, Aaron Schoenfeld and Kei Kamara have all gotten their shot at cementing their place in the starting XI — with varying degrees of success — but down the stretch, Head Coach Adrian Heath turned to Robin Lod to play a false 9 role and it’s safe to say he won’t be going away from it any time soon. Lod has played the position before for the Finnish national team and has rounded into one of the most assured finishers on the team this season, finishing the season second on the team with seven goals.

The chemistry among the front four over the last several games has been a wonder to behold. In three consecutive 3-0 wins from Decision Day through the playoffs, Emanuel Reynoso has had a hand in every one of the nine goals scored, with Kevin Molino contributing to seven and Lod to four. And while he hasn’t gotten on the score sheet, don’t discount Ethan Finlay’s contributions as a tireless runner and willing disruptor down the right wing. On Monday night, it will be strength against strength as two of the league’s hottest attacking quartets collide.

Aside from Alonso, Monday’s game will also be a reunion for the Loons and former MNUFC midfielder Miguel Ibarra. Ibarra was one of the team’s best and most beloved players during their time in the NASL and was a mainstay through the Loons’ first few years in MLS. Called upon to play every position across the midfield and even as a wingback and fullback occasionally, Ibarra was a perpetual motion machine for the Loons and never failed to make time to meet and connect with fans and supporters. After starting the first few games for Seattle, he has mostly played in a bench role this season.

Minnesota United FC plays in North America’s top professional soccer league, Major League Soccer (MLS). The league features 26 teams from across the United States and Canada.

After a successful bid to host the FIFA World Cup in 1994, the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) founded MLS to bring a top-level soccer league back to the country for the first time since 1984, when the original NASL folded. The league was set to begin play in 1996 with 10 teams: Colorado Rapids, Columbus Crew (SC), D.C. United, Dallas Burn (FC Dallas), Kansas City Wiz (Sporting Kansas City), Los Angeles Galaxy, New England Revolution, NY/NJ MetroStars (New York Red Bulls), San Jose Clash (Earthquakes) and Tampa Bay Mutiny.

The league’s first game was played on April 6, 1996 as the San Jose Clash played D.C. United in front of 31,000 fans at Spartan Stadium. The league drew large crowds in its opening season, pulling star power from around North America and building on the excitement of the 1994 FIFA World Cup.

As MLS has continued to grow, clubs have begun moving out of shared American football venues and into soccer-specific stadium, led by Columbus Crew (SC), who moved into the soccer-specific MAPFRE Stadium in 1999. Currently, 20 teams play in soccer-specific venues.

The league is split into the Eastern and Western Conferences. Each team plays 34 games during the season. Teams play all conference opponents twice, once at home and once on the road, and teams in the other conference once, with an even balance of home and away games. The top seven teams in each conference at the end of the year qualify for the MLS Cup Playoffs.

Starting in 2019, the league adopted a new single-elimination format for the entirety of the MLS Cup Playoffs. The top seven teams in each conference qualify for postseason, with the regular-season conference champions receiving a first-round bye. The second through seventh seeds will play the opening round games, with the highest seed hosting games throughout the tournament. The winners will move on to join the one-seed teams in the conference semifinals. The winner of each conference championship will move on to the MLS Cup Final. The team with the best regular season record will host the final.
