Jason and Sue extend a warm welcome to those attending our Annual Bull Sale at Bexley this year. The bulls are a great group, with terrific shape, and will inject carcass quality, high yield, weight and finishing ability at weaning and beyond. They are medium framed and of the highest standard and quality. The draft comprises of 41 Polled bulls including 14 Red Factor bulls and 3 Dehorned bulls.

Even under the exceptionally challenging circumstances we have all been handling, it is wonderful to hear from clients and how positive their feedback has been about the great results they are having with their individual crossbreeding programs. It is refreshing to hear their success and drives us to produce bulls who will give them extra genetic gains.

In March this year Davidson Cameron & Co held their Annual Weaner Sale (The Powerhouse Sale at Gunnedah), once again being a resounding success. Congratulations to our clients who sell at this great weaner sale and to the team at Davidson Cameron & Co who really do have a terrific operation over there, the organisation and detail is second to none!

There has also been terrific success with the crossbred calves of Tracy-Anne Conroy at Grafton and Casino Weaner Sales, and Bill Wilson at Tamworth who sold 350 to 400 weaners at an average of 340kg to return $1,000 a head. Fantastic results!

For those people who may be looking to purchase bulls this year, it is strongly recommended that insurance be taken out for transit and maybe the first joining season. It is also advised to have some stock on hand in the yard to settle the new bull, only because these fellows have run together in big groups of bulls.

WELCOME TO THE 2019 ANNUAL SALE

The stud was established through artificial insemination programs using French and British bloodlines, after very slow and deliberate selection and grading up progress. Some of the bulls used originally included ‘Absalon’, ‘Aga Khan’, ‘Bent Frederick’, ‘Carabinier’, ‘Kersknowe Festival’, ‘Mearns Enterprise’, and ‘Salmon’, predominantly French.

The graded up breeding herd from these bloodlines was then infused by a Mandalong bull, ‘Mandalong Layman’, the first polled bull ever sold by Rick Pisaturo at his St. Mary’s Sale. In 1980, twelve three quarter grade cows by ‘Carabanier’ were purchased, boosting the volume capacity of our then female herd.

An embryo transfer program with the ATB at Mittagong, NSW was initiated. The two foundation pure bred matrons included ‘Mandalong Confidence 18th’ and ‘Kenmere Orsova’, a Blythe Herald cow purchased from the Hillside Stud, Mittagong (Harry and Bea Wadds). These two females were inseminated very successfully to ‘Crown’ and ‘Power’, resulting in 50% female calves, adding to the herd base.

Over a period of time, both out cross females (very few) and bulls have been purchased from many selected studs over a long period of time to compliment the Minnie-Vale herd producing the cattle you see before you today.

Minnie - Vale cattle have been very successful in all aspects of the beef industry, show cattle, Interbreed wins at many shows, including the Horden Trophy, Sydney Show and Brisbane Champion of Champion, steer competitions. Probably the hardest to crack are prices in the sale ring at multi-vendor sales. Top prices and record-breaking prices have been achieved.

The bulls we have sold off farm, also very successful in their respective cross breeding programs, continuing to improve the hip pocket, which is after all, the bottom line, and the reason we breed Charolais cattle and where 98% of our product goes to today’s commercial cattleman.

Our cattle over the years, through very strict breeding and culling, have evolved into consistent, well muscled, soft, easy doing cattle, herd improvers, fertility, milking ability and quality are their trademark along with a quiet disposition.

We recommend your new purchases, where possible, be off loaded into yards where there is other stock, preferably cows or steers. Remember, they have been in mobs, not isolated.

InspectionCattle may be inspected any time prior to the sale by arrangement with the vendor or his agents.

Breeding Soundness EvaluationAll bulls offered in this sale have passed their semen test and are sold fertile. They have been examined by the veterinary consultant for structural and physical soundness.

Supplementary SheetAll bulls will be scanned just prior to the sale by the certified scanning technician, David Reid. The bulls will be scanned for eye muscle area, rump and rib fat, marbling (IMF%) as well as sale weight and scrotal size. Supplementary sheets will be available on sale day.

GuaranteeAll stock are guaranteed breeders. Any claim against the breeding ability of an animal purchased should be made in writing and accompanied by a veterinary certificate within six months of the date of sale. Any animal failing to breed may either be replaced or credit given to the value of the purchase price at the following sale. This guarantee does not include interest, expenses, costs or damages this process may incur. The purchaser is responsible.

HealthMinnie - Vale is an accredited TB and Brucellosis free herd. The Moree Department of Rural Lands, of which Minnie - Vale, Bexley is part of, is recognised as Johnes Disease Free. All sale cattle have been vaccinated with 7 in 1. All sale cattle have been back lined with Cydectin and innoculated against three day sickness. All bulls have been pestivirus tested free.

DeliveryA delivery instruction slip must be completed in writing - stock awaiting delivery. All care will be taken, but absolutely no responsibility accepted for any injury or loss occasioned during, as a consequence of, or in relation to, any holding.

InsuranceOwnership passes at the fall of the hammer. Check with your Agent on sale day for their company insurance. It is strongly recommended that insurance be taken out for transit and maybe the first joining season.

Calving Ease EBVs (%) are based on calving difficulty scores, birth weights and gestation length information. More positive EBVs are favourable and indicate easier calving. - CE % Direct = Direct Calving Ease - The EBV for direct calving ease indicates the influence of the sire on calving ease in purebred females calving at two years of age.- CE % Daughters = Daughters’ Calving Ease - The EBV for daughters’ calving ease indicates how easily that sire’s daughters will calve at two years of age.

Gestation Length EBV (days) is an estimate of the time from conception to the birth of the calf and is based on Artificial Insemination and hand mating records. Lower (negative) Gestation Length EBVs indicate shorter gestation length and therefore easier calving and increased growth after birth.

Birth Weight EBV (kg) is based on the measured birth weight of progeny, adjusted for dam age. The lower the value the lighter the calf at birth and the lower the likelihood of a difficult birth. This is particularly important when selecting sires for use over heifers.

200-Day Growth EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 80 and 300 days of age. Values are adjusted to 200 days and for age of dam. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal’s genetic merit for growth to early ages.

400-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 301 and 500 days of age, adjusted to 400 days and for age of dam. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal’s genetic merit for yearling weight.

600-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 501 and 900 days of age, adjusted to 600 days and for age of dam. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal’s genetic merit for growth beyond yearling age.

Mature Cow Weight EBV (kg) is based on the cow weight when the calf is weighed for weaning, adjusted to 5 years of age. This EBV is an estimate of the genetic difference in cow weight at 5 years of age and is an indicator of growth at later ages and potential feed maintenance requirements of the females in the breeding herd. Steer breeders wishing to grow animals out to a larger weight may also use the Mature Cow Weight EBV.

Milk EBV (kg) is an estimate of an animal’s milking ability. For sires, this EBV indicates the effect of the daughter’s milking ability, inherited from the sire, on the 200-day weights of her calves. For dams, it indicates her milking ability.

Scrotal Size EBV (cm) is calculated from the circumference of the scrotum taken between 300 and 700 days of age and adjusted to 400 days of age. This EBV is an estimate of an animal’s genetic merit for scrotal size. There is also a small negative correlation with age of puberty in female progeny and therefore selection for increased scrotal size will result in reduced age at calving of female progeny.

Carcase Weight EBV (kg) is based on abattoir carcase records and is an indicator of the genetic differences in carcase weight at the standard age of 650 days.

Eye Muscle Area EBV (sq cm) is calculated from measurements from live animal ultrasound scans and from abattoir carcase data, adjusted to a standard 300 kg carcase. This EBV estimates genetic differences in eye muscle area at the 12/13th rib site of a 300 kg dressed carcase. More positive EBVs indicate better muscling on animals. Sires with relatively higher Eye Muscle Area EBVs are expected to produce better muscled and higher percentage yielding progeny at the same carcase weight than will sires with lower Eye Muscle Area EBVs.

Rib Fat and Rump Fat EBVs (mm) are calculated from measurements of subcutaneous fat depth at the 12/13 rib site and the P8 rump site (from live animal ultrasound scans and from abattoir carcases) and are adjusted to a standard 300 kg carcase. These EBVs are indicators of the genetic differences in fat distribution on a standard 300 kg carcase. Sires with low, or negative, fat EBVs are expected to produce leaner progeny at any particular carcase weight than will sires with higher EBVs.

Retail Beef Yield EBV (%) indicates genetic differences between animals for retail yield percentage in a standard 300 kg carcase. Sires with larger EBVs are expected to produce progeny with higher yielding carcases.

Intramuscular Fat EBV (%) is an estimate of the genetic difference in the percentage of intramuscular fat (marbling) at the 12/13th rib site in a 300kg carcase. Depending on market targets, larger more positive values are generally more favourable.

Selection IndicesDomestic Index ($) - Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for an example commercial herd with a British cow base (eg Angus) targeting grass-finished production for the domestic trade. This Index assumes pasture grown & finished steers weighing 430 kg (240 kg HSCW and 6 mm P8 fat depth) at 12 months. Daughters are retained or sold for breeding therefore maternal traits are of importance. In response to industry feedback, positive emphasis has been placed on finishing ability.

Export Index ($) – Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for an example commercial herd with a British cow base (eg Angus) targeting the production of steers for export markets. This Index assumes pasture grown & finished steers weighing 700 kg (380 kg HSCW and 9 mm P8 fat depth) at 29 months. Daughters are retained or sold for breeding therefore maternal traits are of importance. In response to industry feedback, positive emphasis has been placed on finishing ability.

Northern Terminal Index ($) – Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for an example commercial herd in Northern Australia (ie Brahman cows) targeting the production of grass finished steers for the Jap Ox market. Steers are sold direct to slaughter at 630 kg (345 kg HSCW and 5 mm P8 fat depth) at 28 months. All progeny are slaughtered. In response to industry feedback positive emphasis has been placed on finishing ability.

AccuracyAccuracy (%) is based on the amount of performance information available on the animal and its close relatives - particularly the number of progeny analysed. Accuracy is also based on the heritability of the trait and the genetic correlations with other recorded traits. Hence accuracy indicates the “confidence level” of the EBV. The higher the accuracy value the lower the likelihood of change in the animal’s EBV as more information is analysed for that animal or its relatives. Even though an EBV with a low accuracy may change in the future, it is still the best estimate of an animal’s genetic merit for that trait. As more information becomes available, an EBV is just as likely to increase in value, as it is to decrease.

Accuracy values range from 0-99%. The following guide is given for interpreting accuracy: - less than 50%: Low accuracy. EBVs are preliminary and could change substantially as more performance information becomes available.- 50-74%: Medium accuracy. Usually based on the animal’s own records and pedigree. - 75-90%: Medium-high accuracy. Some progeny information included. EBVs may change with addition of more progeny data.- more than 90%: High accuracy estimate of the animal’s true breeding value. As a rule, animals should be compared on EBVs regardless of accuracy. However, where two animals have similar EBVs the one with higher accuracy could be the safer choice, assuming other factors are equal.

Tracey has a commercial herd of approximately 500 breeders and 300 replacement heifers. Tracey currently has the Charolais running with her Brahman herd however has crossed the bulls with excellent success with Angus, Santa, and Charolais over Charolais. Most of her Charolais/Charolais cross steers are sold to repeat buyers direct off the property and are highly sought after. Tracey also sells Charolais and Charolais cross heifers at the Annual Special Female Sale held in February each year at Grafton. Everyone loves Angus but Charolais always top the local market!

• Introducing Minnie Vale Charolais bulls to my commercial herd is the best thing I have ever done.• Despite initial reluctancy to purchase bulls from out west and bring to the coast I couldn’t be happier with the result.• The Minnie-Vale bull sales I have been to over the years always display a very consistent line from front to back so it is never a problem choosing one to purchase.• The Minnie-Vale bulls I have purchased over the years always hold their condition well and it was the first thing we noticed compared to bulls purchased across other breeds.• Bulls purchased from other regions have struggled with lantana that grows here. However, not one of the ten bulls I have purchased from Minnie-Vale have ever touched lantana, therefore, no losses.• The Charolais calves at weaning are generally 20-30kg heavier.• Better shaped calves, good heads, great muscling and thickness.• The Minnie-Vale bulls are exceptionally quiet and this is directly passed onto their progeny as well as the versatility of being able to cross the Charolais with any other breed with great results!
