Minster Matters 3EDITORIAL

Here we are AGAIN!! with our final issue of 2008 and thenext one, in February, being our 100th. Please read our plea onP15 for pictures etc., for what we hope will become a bit of aSpecial Edition.. (But we need your help to make it so)

Before I forget I must just inform you that we did receive areply from the landowner regarding the issue of wheel clampingthat we covered last month.

On to brighter things, we have a brand new letterbox in theGossip Shop, for you to be able to leave us your hard copy - thiswas kindly made, and donated to us, by Simon Greenstreet, wifeof one of our little band of very willing volunteers, and we thankhim very much, it’s such a lot better than our previous cardboardbox. We have decorated it with a collage of village pictures soit may become a bit of a talking point in the future.

You will notice we have gained a new advertiser for ourback page and we hope you will support their business, but notat the detriment of any of our other advertisers. The business isowned by two lads who grew up here in Minster, one still liveshere as do their parents. They have committed to continuing theadvert provided they can at least cover its cost with work itbrings their way, so please, if you don’t deal with our localgarage then give them a try and also help this magazine at thesame time.

It was really good to see so many new faces helping to erectthe village Christmas trees even though it was in a howling, bitter wind. Well done to those who stepped up to the plate tokeep the tradition alive, your efforts are truly appreciated by usall. I must also add a special thank you from Karen and Ann foryour help, having so many willing volunteers really cut downtheir stress levels. Let’s hope as many turn out to take themdown again and pack the lights away. Attwells will be the placeto go to find out on what date this will be happening, because ithadn’t been confirmed as we went to print with this issue.

What a lot there appears to be going on in the run up toChristmas, it would seem the vicar has his work cut out at this

time of the year with so many services to conduct, so no matter what yourage group there appears to be a service to suit you all.

Well just enough space left for me, on the teams behalf, to wish all ofour loyal readers a Very Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year.

See you all again in 2009 (February 1st - next issue - 100th edition!!)

4REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY by Diane CotterillOn Remembrance Sunday a parade was led to St Mary the Virgin Church

by Minster and Monkton Royal British Legion members. Brownie, Guide andScout members also joined in.

After a service at the church, RBLmembers were greeted at the club housewith hot soup and a superb buffet.

There was an impressive display ofdetails of local residents who hadfought and died in battle. This displaywas the result of many months ofresearch via the internet by StevePhilpott. Steve intends to carry on withhis research.

I would like to congratulate Minster & Monkton Royal British Legion forthe Remembrance Day parade on Sunday - it was very well organized. I wasvery pleased to see so many ex. Service taking part and was amazed to see somany of the younger community marching with such pride. At the club after, there was a superb buffet provided by the club members. They have workedso hard to make the R.B.L. club work, as up till last year it was in decline. Soto those who I will not name (they know who I mean) - a special thanks. Theresearch into the archives must have taken up a lot of time; the display boardsand photographs were exceptional, as was the video. Well done to you all!

Yours sincerely, M.M. Smith

As Chairman of Minster & Monkton Royal British Legion Women’sSection, I would like to thank the Branch and Club for the wonderful paradeand buffet for the Remembrance Day festival. Also my thanks go to everyonethat worked tirelessly getting the archive information for our servicemen andwomen. Gratitude also to all those that attended, especially the younger people.

Many thanks, Chairman D.P. Smith

Following the very special Remembrance Sunday service held in theParish Church, may I, on behalf of myself and my wife, thank members of theBritish Legion for their in depth pictorial and documentation of the villageService personnel who fell during the two World wars.

Photographs and individual details brought a very personal reality to theconclusion of the Day of Remembrance.

Dennis Neville

On Remembrance Sunday it was lovely to see Minster British Legionalive again. As an ex Serviceman and Minster RBL member, I have taken partin the March to the church many times, ok, the parade this year was a bit of ashambles even for an old “matelot”, but it didn’t matter, we got there.

I would just like to say a big thank you to all Legion members who wereinvolved in organising the excellent buffet and display held back at theclubhouse after the service, you really worked hard and done us proud.

Community Warden, Steve TaylorAs we near the festive season I thought I should remind everyone that this

can also be a time when opportunists come a calling. Please be extra carefuland remember not to leave Christmas presents on show near your windows.Turn Christmas lights off when going to bed or when leaving the house.

Lock pressies in the boot of your car while out shopping. If you are away over the Christmas period, ask a neighbour to keep an eye

on your property. A timer switch is an excellent idea at this time of year. Finally, never leave the door on the latch for late arrivals.

I’m sure we do all this, but it’s sometimes good to have a reminder.I hope you enjoyed the late night shopping and you came and supported

your local shops who do such good work throughout the year providing theevery day things we all need from time to time.

Around this time of year some of our youngsters think it’s a good time tobe a nuisance. Probably because it is nice and dark and they think no-one willknow who they are. Well of course, like most things it’s just a very smallminority who get involved in what is classed as anti social behaviour but canbe very intimidating to our elderly and vulnerable residents.

My advice as always in these situations is not to confront them but notifyme or indeed the police if you think it warrants it. Remember, if we’re notaware of these incidents no matter how trivial they may seem we cannot putthings in place to deal with them. As I say, it really is just a few that tend tobe involved in these incidents and we must not get the idea that everyyoungster we see out and about is up to no good because that clearly is not thecase. As always the best way to maintain a good quality of life is for us all towork together and show that Minster is a good place to live and work.

I’d like wish you all a very happy and peaceful Christmas and New Year.

A fond farewell and very best wishes toCaptain Fiona Barnett.

It is with sadness that we report that Fiona will not be returning to thevillage. Following the death of three members of her family, including herMother, Fiona has been granted six months leave of absence from her work. The Salvation Army will then find her an appointment near her home town,Stafford so that she can be near the remaining members of her family.

The Salvation Army expect to appoint a new Minister to the village byAugust of next year. In the meantime a full programme of weekday activitiesand Sunday worship will continue to be provided at the Worship and Commu-nity Hall at 11 Tothill Street.

We would like to thank Captain Fiona for the contribution she has madeto the work of the Salvation Army in the village and wish her well in thefuture. We will miss her cheerful disposition, enthusiasm and the love andcare she showed to all those with whom she came in contact. She will begreatly missed.

Minster- in- Thanet WI.

It is with great sadness that we learnt of the death of ValerieHughes, who had been our Secretary and a long-standing, hard

working  committee member.    She will be greatly missed by us all, and ourheartfelt condolences are sent to her husband John, and her family.

November's meeting took the form of our AGM, with  electionof new officers and committee.  Marion Rose, retiring President took over theduties of Secretary, Joan Backler was elected President, and Ann Wilks tookover from Margaret Tinker as Treasurer.  All officers and committee memberswere thanked for their hard work throughout the year, not forgetting DorothyButterworth's hard work on the outings and events  table and Pam Hammondfor running the monthly raffle.

With our growing membership, a proposal was made to restrict numbers andrun a waiting list:    this caused much debate, and was defeated.  However, aproposal to amend our name to simply 'Minster in Thanet WI' was carried, as itwas felt that, since there was no longer an Afternoon Institute, the Evening partof our title was superfluous.

A resume was given of our successful year's fund-raising, social events, andgroup activities.   As reported last month, our Quiz Team took part in the WITop Team competition, in which they came a magnificent second.  Well done, girls.      Our 'Dabble Days', on which  members tried their hands at beadingand  art, heard  tips on digital photography from Don Wilks, took part in asing-along with Barry, and a walk at Pegwell Bay with the Roc Doc, were agreat success - not forgetting the Ploughman's Lunch andrefreshments organised by Marion Rose!

A week later we  met again - this time for our 'Christmas' Dinner at StAugustine's Golf Club, when instead of the traditional Christmas meal wefeasted on a sumptuous buffet of all manner of savoury fare, followed by a sweettrolley to behold!   Some brave members even managed second helpings, suchwas the selection on offer.

Our Christmas Party, for current members and invited guests only, ison 9th December at 7.30pm in the Village Hall.  For details of the meetings inJanuary next year,  to which visitors and new members  are always welcome, please see separate notice on page 24.

Meanwhile, we take the opportunity of wishing all members and Minsterresidents a Happy Christmas and peaceful New Year.

Vicar’s LetterChristmas will soon be upon us again, a time when we can marvel afresh

at the extent of God’s love for us all shown in His becoming one of us in thebaby Jesus whose birth we celebrate.

We mark this in giving gifts to others and I would like to draw yourattention to three ways, centred on the Parish Church, in which we can do this.

The first is the ‘Toy Service’ on 7th December with the donated toysbeing distributed to children who might otherwise not have any (details ofsuitable gifts are given on page 20), and the second is the Civic Carol Serviceat the Lych Gate 7.30pm on Tuesday 16th December, when there will be acollection for the Pilgrim’s Hospice. The Civic Carol Service is a veryspecial occasion on the Minster calendar. Do come and join us if youpossibly can.

This year we are also introducing a Christingle Service. Our intentionis not to compete with the School’s Christingle Service, but to give anopportunity for others who are not able to go to the school’s service to attendone. We are particularly thinking of families whose children used to attendthe village school. This collection will go towards the work of the Children’sSociety.

May this Christmas be a time of special blessing for you all, as wecelebrate the birth of our Saviour!

“And his name shall be called Immanuel, which means ‘God is with us’Bob Coles

THANK YOU!Thank you to the Parish Council for agreeing a grant to support the

upgrading of the PA system at the Parish Church. As well as helping usreplace aging equipment, the grant will enable us to purchase extra radiomicrophones for use when the church is used by large groups – especially thelocal school.

Without help from the Council we should not have been able to do thisfor some considerable time.

Thank you also to all who have given financial or practical help towardsthe installation of the heating system in the Parish Church. The project is atan advanced stage and we hope to have it operational by Christmas. Pleaseremember that the system is designed to prevent the building getting so coldthat it continues to deteriorate: it will not maintain domestic temperatures! We hope you will feel more comfortable, but you will still need to keep yourcoat on in winter!

The Parochial Church Council of St Mary’s, Minster.

We would like to wish everyone a“Happy Christmas and

A Prosperous New Year”

Minster Neighbourhood WatchAt the Committee Meeting held on Tuesday 28th October 08,

Sylvia Fricker resigned her position as Chairperson of this villagegroup. Sylvia told members present that it was with regret she mustdo so but her families health must take priority, she would howevercontinue as co-ordinator for Augustine Road and offered to help outas and when she could.

Sylvia then asked if there was anyone willing to stand in her place, after a ‘no show’ of hands Ray Owen, MM editor, volunteered to takethe post on a short temporary basis until a more permanent volunteercould be found.

Members thanked Sylvia for all she has done over the many yearsshe has been in post and they hoped her problems would soon beresolved.

Sylvia also reported that two other street co-ordinators hadresigned so we will need to get those areas covered if they are toremain in the scheme. It was also noted that there are still some roadsin the village that aren’t in the scheme which we ought to re-invite. Itwas agreed that this should be done at the earliest opportunity in thenew year.

It was mentioned that some existing signs were becomingextremely faded and/or damaged, so members were asked to notethose in their own area and report back to the incoming Chairperson.

Speeding on Monkton Road was mentioned and it was noted thatAcol hold the equipment for Rural Speedwatch which is available forother villages to use if required.

Sylvia asked for her contact details to be removed from the villagewebsite, which Ray agreed to do.

( Note the new email for Minster NW is [email protected] )Please note we will be calling a meeting early in the new year to

discuss an idea that Steve, the Community Warden, and Ray havebeen doing a lot of background work on. This will hopefully“re-invent” the neighbourhood watch in Minster, although it will needALL co-ordinators to get involved to promote it and get it off theground. So to those of you who didn’t attend the October meetingplease be ready to come to the next one as it is important that you allhear what Steve and Ray have to say. Not wishing to alert others toour idea, which they may try to steal, we’ll say no more on this atpresent, but it should help to improve the lives of a lot of the localpopulation, yourselves included, if you agree to take it on board andassist us to get it up and running.

We hope Minster will become Pro-active rather than Re-active !!!

‘I confirm that the condition of this footway is checked regularly and that recentlyrepairs were carried out to some areas. There are therefore no outstanding maintenanceat this location currently.

With regard to the possibility of widening the existing footway between the VillageHall and 73A High Street, this has been looked at on a number of occasions previouslyand, unfortunately, there is no easy solution. Widening the footway in this location wouldmake the road too narrow for two-way traffic. Therefore, although footway wideningwould be desirable, it cannot be achieved within the existing highway boundaries.’

Kim Hills, Head of Community Operations

Concerns over Village High Street footpathAfter several concerns from villagers regarding the current state of the existing

footpath between 73A High Street and the Village Hall, Chair of Thanet Senior Citizens’Forum, Barry Coppock, contacted Kent Highway Services to enquire if anything couldbe done. Mr Coppock stated in his letter that villagers were concerned ‘that the footpathis only wide enough for single file walking’, ‘the footpath is uneven and dangerous’ and‘that on occasions they (pedestrians) are forced to step off the footpath into the road’.

Here is the written response Mr Coppock’s received from Kent Highway Services:-

This may not be the response villagers had hoped for but suggested action from thefollowing letter may help to alleviate a little of the problems.

Letter to the EditorFrom the village hall to Attwells the pavement is very uneven, but, untrimmed

trees and bushes hang out over the path, below 5’ 9” in places and growing outin others. This makes walking up the High Street very difficult for the disabled andelderly.

Can you please ask people to trim these back. (The converted Baptist Churchis split into 4 dwellings I think, and has overgrown leylandii)

Birds seem to have disappeared, food is left for days, if not taken off the birdtrays. Over the past few years they have diminished to almost nil this year. I wastold farmers have brought in hawks to stop birds pecking at the crops.

Derek Chaston

Unfortunately due to limited space MM is unable to print Mr Coppocks letter infull. Should you wish to see this and the original copy of Kent Highways responseplease visit the MM website. Ed.

AMBER’S ADVICE

There is something infinitely healing in therepeated refrains of nature - assured that dawncomes after night, and spring after the winter.

The winter holiday season is approaching, and with it comes the opportuni-ty for massive waste.

Eco-Tips:- Wrap your gifts in fabric (e.g., can you sew? How about making some re-

usable gift bags?), or reuse the wrapping you have saved from last year.- When you are planning your holiday menus, think about where your in-

gredients are coming from and don’t forget to buy local.- If you’re not the host, think about how you are travelling about

and don’t forget to carpool.- If you are the lucky recipient of a fancy new toy or two, don’t throw awaywhat you already have, donate it to charity or give it away through Thanet

Freecycle.

They Did It!On the 28th October Rachael and Karen West finally

managed to do their tandem skydive raising over £700 insponsorship, plus generous donations, for Karen’s trip toIndia, she also received lots of good wishes so a VERYBIG THANK YOU!

Karen left for India on the 5th November, arriving atNagercoil on the Southern tip of India, where she isbased, on the 6th. Communication is difficult at the moment, but when shehas settled, any teething problems hopefully will be resolved, and she will bepassing on all her adventures, although in one of her emails she writes thatone of the things she will be concentrating on is training life skills to teenagegirls, as these are skills which have not been taught, in school, or at home.Over Christmas she will be helping to build a house for two orphans, whohave the land but can’t afford to build it.

Minster Playhouse Needs You!We are a thriving group and have a very good

membership base; however, we really need some new blood, fresh faces - and from Minster. Our committee only has twomembers who live in the village and we think that’s a shame.

Have you ever come to see anything and thought, “if onlythey did...” Well, come and be a part of it! Do you haveyounger children who might want to be involved? I lived inMinster for six years and moved to Sandwich in January.Biggest mistake - Minster is such a rare place where there isa comfort and community like no other I have ever known. Ifit wasn’t for the economic climate, I’d be back.

If you think you would not fit in, please try. We really arewelcoming. For more information, check out our website at

Oil Tanks (Message from the Environment Agency)As the nights draw in and temperatures drop, many of us  now have  our

heating on to help keep us warm through the winter months. But if you use domestic heating oil, make sure you check or maintain your

tank. Doing so now could prevent pollution and save you from paying a hugeclean-up bill.   Having adequate security is important to help prevent theft ofyour oil and the spillage which is often caused by thieves.

Each year domestic heating oil leaks from damaged or worn out tanks andpipes. This oil is toxic and harmful to plants, animals and to surface waters.  Italso quickly enters and contaminates groundwater, which provides 75% of yourdrinking water.  Cleaning up oil spills is difficult and often very expensive.  Onerecent incident cost the unfortunate householder over £100,000 after oil leakedonto his own land. If a drinking water source is affected, the bill could exceed£1 million and may not be covered by your insurance. Domestic oil spillsinvariably disrupt homeowner’s lives and blight property values.

So what can you do to prevent a leak? The Environment Agencyrecommends a number of simple actions you can take:

· Protect your tank and pipe work with a bund, around the base of yourtank. This will prevent pollution in case of a leak.

· Carry out regular maintenance checks on tanks, pipes, sight-gauges andvalves.  Best of all, get a qualified OFTEC registered technician to service andinspect your tank and pipes annually.

· Keep your property secure. With increasing fuel prices theft isbecoming a problem in some areas and vandalism an increasing trend.

· Make sure your home insurance policy covers the cost of a clean-upoperation to you and any third parties.

· Site your tank at least 10 metres from a pond, river, ditch or lake and atleast 50 metres from a borehole or spring where possible.

· Monitor how much oil you use so that you will be quickly alerted to anyloss of oil.

If you do experience a leak there are measures you can take to reduce theimpact on both you and the environment. These include:

· Call the Environment Agency’s free 24-hour emergency pollutionhotline on 0800 80 70 60.

· Stop the flow by turning the tap off.· If you have a plastic tank, as a temporary measure, rub soap into the split

in the tank to try and seal it.· Putt sand or earth down to absorb the spill and prevent it from entering

a river, drain or groundwater.· Never use detergents or a hose to wash away spilt oil as this can make

the problem worse.

COMPUTER CORNER

Computers have three main functions at Christmas:- giftshopping on the Internet, creating personalised Christmas cards

and producing address labels to stick onto your Christmas cards. Shopping andcard-making can be fun but address labels are a little more complicated so thismonth I’m offering some help with this tricky task.

First of all you need some sheets of self adhesive labels, A4 size. These canbe purchased from Staples or similar stationery shop. Back at your PC, if youalready have the names and addresses of your friends somewhere on yourcomputer and want to put them onto labels, you can use a facility in MicrosoftWord called Mail Merge. Some versions of Word will guide you easily throughthis process, other versions may need a little extra time and effort. Read throughthe ‘Help’ facility in Word for more advice on this.

For those people who don’t already have their friends’ names and addresseson the computer the task is a little simpler. On your PC open up Microsoft Wordand click on ‘Tools’ on the toolbar at the top of the page. A menu will show andyou will see an option for ‘Letters and Mailings’ or ‘Envelopes and Labels’ orsimilar (depending on the version of Word you are using). Find and go to the‘Labels’ section. Here you’ll need to tell the computer what size your labels areby choosing the ‘Options’ button. Your label product information can be foundon the front of the box you bought it in. On the screen enter the label producteg. ‘Avery A4 and A5 sizes’ and label product number eg. J8163 as written onyour box. Click OK.

Next click the ‘New Document’ button and a white page will appear on yourscreen that is marked out to look like your label sheets. Simply type your namesand addresses in each of the boxes. Use the ‘tab’ key on your keyboard to movebetween boxes. You can create extra pages of labels by pressing the tab keyafter the last box on the page. Then print your labels like you would a normalletter.

If you don’t have Microsoft Word, your computer’s word processing pro-gram may offer the facility to create labels. The principle will be the same asabove but the process may be different.

Have a very happy Christmas and best wishes for the New Year. HappyComputing!

There are many stories linked to Christmas puddings.Putting charms or coins in the mixture was very popular withVictorians. Each charm had a meaning- for example a ringmeant you would find a sweetheart. When making the pud-ding everyone in the family should stir it and make a wish.King George I rediscovered the idea of Christmas puddingafter Oliver Cromwell banned it and it became popular oncemore.

Before these were banned like the pudding, they were madein the shape of Jesus’ crib. If people made them round in-stead. This is how they are today. They were originally madewith minced meat added to the fruit but gradually this was leftout.

At one time Christmas Boxes were given to staff and peoplewho do other jobs for you on this day. Church Alms boxeswere opened and the money given to the poor.

Tom Smith developed the type of cracker we know today.Crackers are usually pulled at the end of the Christmas meal. The hats are like crowns because it is an easy shape to makeand wear.

It became a custom during Victorians reign to give presents. Before this they were sometimes given at New Year or on aspecial occasion only. Cards also became very popular atthis time and the penny post and use of envelopes meant thatthey could be sent all over the country easily.
