    (from IOACCs L4.)

(from fhe AngleseyEduca rionAufhorUy) was we Icorned to the meeting,A "Personal Hearing Before The PersonneI Pane I (aka The Personnel Sub-CommWee r had been a rranged fo r at 5:30 p ,m, As theschool did not have any guide li nes relating to a 'hearing', a talk and guidancewas given by on the procedure to follow, It was also explainedthat an Appeal panel had already been formed,The meet ing proceeded to discuss the current personne I situatio n. A report wasgiven by the Headmaster on where the school had rea ched in the process, I twasexp lained that one m em ber of staff. had received conf irmation by the(Education} Authority that they would be al lowed early retirement due to surplus(i.e, in order to avoid being placed under compulsory red undancy), Howeverthere are 4 other members of staff who have been in form ed tha t the Authoritywill not approve their requests fo r early ret irement even though the school isfacing significant (b udgetary) cu ts,This news was very disappointing to the staff and to the schooL as the school hadhoped their req uests would be app roved by the Authority, In ad ditio n to this, theAuthority is encourag ing the school to agree to opera te in def icit fo r the nextfinancial year, but the Headmaster strongly disagrees with this idea, Accordingto him (T he Hea dmaster), the reasons for disagreeing were that i t is virtuallyimpossible to timetable effectively without knowing exactly how many membersof teaching staff would be on si te, Another important fact was that the schoolhad never been in " the red and he was no t comfortab Ie with the idea, Theschool works closely with the other 4 secondary schools on the island with Post-16Education" and the school wo uld not be able to tim eta ble and arrange this partof the curriculurn, He finished off by saying that there needs to be consistency bythe Au thori ty and that all schools are treated in the same manner,The Chairman ex ressed the disa pointment of the Pane I in hearing that theteachers of ere no t been of f ered retirem ent packs thatwould enab le them to leave voluntari ly, The scenario of putting these membersof (teaching) staff on compulsory redundancy was discussed,Decision. To wri te a letter to the Authority to exp ress the disap pointm ent of the panel,ad ding that the Governing Body was re Iuctan t to a gree to a bud get that wouldmean running in deficit for the next fi nancial year, Also to request the Authorityto reconsider the decision with regards to the retirem en t pack of fered to staff, inorder to take steps that would lead to a positive f inancial situation, (i.e, not be "inthe red)The Chairman thanked everyone a t the end of the meeting,

The Authority relented and the 4

    members of staff were granted

early retirement. But the fact that

    the Panel discussed the scenario

    of putting them under compulsory

    redundancy speaks volumes!
