4. STEM and Utah Board of Education - Roberta Schlicher Roberta has nothing to report at this time. She is still waiting to hear back. Charlie Vono mentioned that his grandkids will be going to a STEM school in Ogden where they will be teaching kids how engineers look at problems. 5. E-Week Committee - Jed Lyman Jed’s report includes a banquet overview. 6. Publishing Committee - Dannie Pollock There will be a link to the electronic Journal on the UEC website. We need to get more articles for next year. 7. Scholarship Committee - Max Gandy Max will submit a written report. He mentioned that we shot for 9 scholarships and ended up awarding 11 plus the two ASHRAE scholarships. He also mentions the award process. 8. Fund-raising Committee - Brian Warner Brian needs to amend his report and will send that to Susan to be included with the minutes. Many of the donations were the result of Charlie Vono’s efforts. Charlie wants to add Lockheed to his list. The Riddle brothers do not have much support from their bosses. 9. Membership Committee - Angie Tymofichuk Angie Tymofichuk was not able to attend and sent her report, but it got corrupted. She will resend it. 10. Legislative Committee - Chris Perry Chris Perry will prepare his report and send it out in the next day or two. 11. Set Up Audit Committee – Charlie Vono The committee members are Brian Warner, Rob Kesler, Jed Lyman, Regina Eco and Charlie Vono. Jed Lyman will be the committee chair. Max Gandy and Roberta Schlicher will attend the meeting as well, but cannot be on the committee. The meeting will be on June 6 at Van Boerum & Frank. 12. Other Business It was suggested that we consider increasing scholarship funding to $1,650 to help pay for tickets as well. It was also suggested that if someone donates a full scholarship amount that their name or company name will be attached to that scholarship. We gave out 22 seats for scholarship winners. That amounts to quite a bit of money. 13. Turn Meeting Over to New Officers The “gavel” was given to Jed Lyman, who is the new UEC Chair. Susan will update the history. Jed Lyman wants Charlie Vono to be our permanent MC at our banquets. Charlie is willing to do it. Roberta Schlicher mentioned that SAME will have their annual golf tournament in August. She will send Susan the announcement for that. She also mentioned that they have some summer camps and tours that will be of interest.

2017 Utah Engineers Council Banquet

On February 25th of this year, the Utah Engineers Council hosted its annual awards banquet at the Interform Club Real room at the Rio Tinto Stadium. Guests began arriving at 6 pm for the social hour. Most were pre-registered and found their name tags and table assignments waiting for them. The ease of this year’s registration process was due to the behind the scenes efforts of Chris Perry, IEEE, who crafted the process and expertly executed it. We also wish to thank, Max Gandy and Susan Merrill who assisted at the registration table.

As guests moved from the lobby into the banquet room, they were welcomed with the live music of Dee-Dee Darby-Duffin and Friends. Dee Dee has been charming audiences around Utah with her sultry jazz vocals backed by keyboards, bass and percussion.

The music was the perfect accompaniment for a wonderfully engaging social hour of networking and lively conversation; and became a tasteful pairing to a delicious meal. Dinner was served buffet style with a choice of Chianti braised short ribs or pan seared, roasted chicken, roasted potatoes and bistro style vegetables. Peach cobbler served with a vanilla crème Chantilly provided a decadent coda to the meal.

Our annual banquet coincides with Engineers Week which is celebrated in the United States on the week that includes the anniversary of George Washington’s birthday (February 22, 1732). In addition to being our first president, he is also recognized as our nation’s first engineer – in addition to his work as a surveyor, he was an engineer in his own right inventing innovative tools for use at Mount Vernon. Engineers Week was started in 1951 by the National Society of Professional Engineers. That same year, J. Vernon Sharp served as the Utah Engineers Council first chairperson.

At this year’s banquet, members of 15 of the most active engineering societies in Utah were in attendance. Many of these societies put forward nominees for Utah’s highest honors in engineering. The Utah Engineers Council was pleased to award Dr. Paul J. Barr of USU as Utah’s Engineering Educator; Jake Merrill of Nano Composite Products, Inc. as Utah’s Fresh Face in Engineering; and Justin Don Naser of ARW Engineers as Utah’s Engineer of the Year for 2017. Also honored was this year’s MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement) Teacher of the Year, Tami Pandoff of E.G. King Elementary School, Davis School District.

We were fortunate to have as our keynote speaker for the evening Martin Frey. Martin is a graduate in Mechanical Engineering from Brigham Young University, a former director for the Utah Governor’s Office of Economic Development and senior director for Cisco, where he spent 13 years in the Silicon Valley. He recently entered the Guinness Book of World’s Records when he became the first person to climb the highest summits on all seven continents and to sail the seven seas, circumnavigating the world.

Page 18: MINUTES OF THE UTAH ENGINEERS COUNCIL Members Present ... · 5/10/2018  · 2016-2017 Committee Chair: Jed Lyman (jlyman@vbfa.com; M: 801-910-6451) Committee Members: Charles Vono

His message to audiences around the country challenges individuals and organizations to step out of their comfort zones.

He effectively provided such a challenge to the Utah Engineers Council when he offered to waive his standard speaker's fee if we could increase the number of $1500 scholarships awarded at our annual banquet from four to nine. We accepted this challenge but not without some concern that we had gotten in over our heads: more than doubling the number of scholarships typically awarded. We were surprised by the response and generosity of our donors, and in the end we were able to fully fund 13 scholarships. Our scholarship winners included two students from Weber State University, four students from the University of Utah, three students each from Brigham Young University and Utah State University and, new this year, a student attending Southern Utah University. All of these institutions provide their engineering students with ABET accredited programs. The evening was conducted smoothly through the welcoming of our guests, the dinner, and the presentation of the scholarships and awards by our capable master of ceremonies and Chair, Charles Vono. Val Hale, the current Executive Director of the Governor’s Office of Economic Development, heralded our event by reading Governor Gary R. Herbert’s Proclamation praising the contributions made by the engineering profession in the State of Utah. While at no time did the evening feel rushed, our keynote and concluding speaker was introduced before 8:30 pm, which positioned us perfectly for the inspiration that followed.

Included in the tales Martin Frey shared of his adventures was a chilling description of the house sized, shifting blocks of ice of the Khumbu Ice Fall. These have claimed many climbers as they leave Base Camp toward the summit of Everest. Between these blocks, or “seracs,” are networks of crevasses, some over a hundred feet deep, which slowly articulate open and closed like the icy jaws of a primeval colossus. These fissures are crossed on bridges constructed from aluminum ladders lashed together with the climber in full mountaineering gear - including stiff boots and crampons.

To disabuse anyone of any romantic views of crossing glass smooth seas propelled by a gentle following breeze, Martin showed video of him aboard the 70 foot racing yacht, christened the “Visit Seattle,” crossing the North Pacific on the final leg of his journey. The video shows the boat and crew awash in 40-foot seas and driven by hurricane force winds.

Woven into these spell-binding stories, were lessons learned that have application even in the lives of less adventurous engineers. When Martin was a new engineer in the 1980’s, he worked in the defense industry. With a change in the presidency, and a reduction federal spending on defense contracts, he pivoted to Silcon Valley and began work at a small start-up: Cisco. Both decisions followed a careful and correct reading of the changing economic seascape and timing his actions to catch the next wave, this and, he admits, a little luck.

Page 19: MINUTES OF THE UTAH ENGINEERS COUNCIL Members Present ... · 5/10/2018  · 2016-2017 Committee Chair: Jed Lyman (jlyman@vbfa.com; M: 801-910-6451) Committee Members: Charles Vono

He also noted that there is no way to steer a ship before it begins to move, but, once underway and with some momentum, a direction can be selected and a course charted. This same principle can be observed in life: while a journey may lead to success or failure, never leaving the safety of a harbor is the most perilous choice we can make.

We want to thank our sponsors who donated to the Utah Engineers Council to help make the banquet possible. We are grateful for the many scholarship sponsors; the students you helped were an impressive group that will likely pay it forward during productive careers. We also wish to thank our member societies for their support of the Council and for finding such impressive nominees among their ranks. We are grateful to the more than 200 guests who purchased tickets and attended the banquet this year; we hope you felt well rewarded for the evening you spent with us. And we hope you will each join us at the Utah Engineers Council Awards Banquet next year as we again celebrate Engineer’s Week in 2018.

Martin Frey challenged the UEC this year to step out of our comfort zone by significantly increasing the number of scholarships we will award at this year’s banquet. Thanks to the generosity of many sponsors, the UEC has been able to meet this challenge.

As the first person in the world to climb all SEVEN SUMMITS and sail all SEVEN SEAS, Mr. Frey is no stranger to living life outside the comfort zone. His message for audiences around the world is to courageously face your summit, leave your safe harbor and boldly chart a course for success.

Mr. Frey is a graduate engineer from BYU (BSME), worked in Silicon Valley as a senior director for Cisco Systems and was the managing director for Governor Jon Huntsman’s Office of Economic Development.

• Society of Manufacturing Engineers. During Oct 16 an email was sent to the POC noted on the

society’s website with no reponse. Follow up required. POC: Kevin Chapple [email protected]

3. Recommendations and Lessons Learned

• Membership cold calls are ineffective. More legwork required on finding personal contacts within potential member societies.

• The majority of the responsibilities of Membership are done by Susan and Charlie due to their positions and longevity of association with UEC. This is not an issue rather a benefit of long time associations across the State.

• Inter society collaboration on events may provide an opportunity for further advertisement and members. Recommend discussing for next year.

UEC Scholarships Final Report 2016‐2017

Max Gandy – May 2017

Background

2016‐ four $1,500 UEC Engineering University Scholarships awarded and one $500 MESA award o One each to BYU, U of U, USU and WSA (Peile Scholarship)

This year, 2017, started the same number and then due to the Banquet speakers challenge [if we met the challenge he would waive his speaking fee] we increased to nine $1,500 scholarships and the MESA $500 award.

o So, we decided to award two UEC scholarships each to BYU, U of U, USU and WSA (Peile Scholarship and UEC). Also, added for the first time one UEC scholarship for SUU.

Funding

The budget was set at $14,000 [ 9 at $1,500 and MESA at $500] to meet the challenge. o The scholarship fund stated with a $1,698.61 positive balance.

Fund raising and pledges started coming in from traditional sources and now aerospace companies, STEM, and some of our UEC member societies. The final scholarship donations exceeded the budget and came to $17,429, without the $1,698 carry over form 2016.

Scholarships

Based on the additional scholarship funding we increased the UEC scholarships to 11.  o In addition, ASHRAE presented two $1,500 Scholarships at the UEC banquet.

Final UEC scholarships; each to BYU ‐ three, U of U ‐ two [plus ASHRAE – two], USU‐three, WSA – two (Peile Scholarship and UEC), SUU – one.

We decided to fund the Peile Scholarship with UEC funds when it was discovered the donor felt slighted because last year they did not receive a thank you. Later we found out the thank you went out but was not the correct address.
