• public funded competitive projects • contract research or services with private or public customers

•Initial offer: our previous know-how

• “conventional” in vivo toxicology (my own experience in the pharmaceutical industry) • Ecosurveillance field studies with sentinel species and biomarkers (our experience at the Faculty of Biology)

Very soon we realize that: • It is simply not possible to perform regulatory toxicology with only three people and without any quality certification • Not many people will be willing to pay for long-term, scientifically interesting but non-regulatory ecotoxicological field studies • Competition is very hard!

UTOX | The Unit of Experimental Toxicology and Ecotoxicology is a

platform of the Barcelona Science Park (PCB), the objective of which is to serve as a support resource for UB groups, companies located in the PCB and other public or private research centers; and, on the other hand, to carry out its own research projects or projects in collaboration with other partners.

UTF | The Unit of Toxicology of the Pharmacy school of the University of

Barcelona cooperates and supports other UB groups, companies and other public and private centers of research in terms of technology transfer and know-how, besides its teaching and research activity.

CERETOX | The Center of Research in Toxicology (TECNIO agent)

comprises the UTOX and UTF units, and is specialized in the Technology transfer in Toxicology, making available to the industry the know-how of the group performing toxicological laboratory and field studies.

MISSION | Support to the industry and health/environment care sector for the safe development of news products and for the improvement of process, by means of the transfer of toxicology.

VISION | To provide advice on, design and perform customized toxicology studies (based on the specific regulatory and quality needs and requirements in each case), covering the areas of ‘non regulatory’ as well as ‘pre-clinical’ Toxicology.

THE TEAM |

The nucleus of the team consists of a total of 7 + 5 persons: PhDs, university graduates and technicians from several different origins and training (biologists and pharmacists primarily).

The team expands every year with university, master or pre-doctoral students, from different scientific backgrounds and countries, who complement their training and projects in the center, by means of temporary stays.

NANOTOXICOLOGY|

The current expansion of nanotechnology and of the range of its practical applications allows to foresee a substantial increase in the levels of exposure (intentional or accidental) to nanoparticles of anthropogenic origin for both humans and the environment. It is therefore essential to establish the basis for the assessment of risk in both areas , which means having relevant data both for exposure and toxicity (hazard). Moreover, the same considerations apply when nanotechnology is used for drug delivery, even of already-known products. The presentation to targets at a nano-scale can modulate their toxicity in a way that can not be predicted a priori . The study of the distribution of nanoparticles in the body and the dynamics of their internalization into cells become, therefore , a topic of the highest importance. Similarly, the protocols of conventional toxicological testing techniques must be adapted to the study of these new materials.

In these 12 years,

• we have participated in 12 competitive projects national and international

• we have participated in more than 50 publications

• we have participated in over 40 conferences and seminars

• we have contributed to the formation of more than 90 people who have made stays in

our laboratory.

We have also worked with over 60 different clients, public and private, and have

collaborated with many groups at the University of Barcelona, other Catalan universities

and institutions throughout Spain and Europe as well as some of South America and

Africa.
