Monsignor Edmund Klimek was an exceptional man – a man that fully lived out the values we hold dear at HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital. He provided spiritual and emotional support to many patients who walked through our doors. Every person he spoke with was impacted by his generosity of spirit, his wisdom, and the deep love he had for all people.

The Monsignor Klimek Healing Presence Endowment was established in 2007 by you, our generous donors. This endowment reflects and continues the work that Father Klimek did in the halls of Sacred Heart Hospital every day. One of the ways this endowment continues his work is by providing for the needy who lack transportation.

Many of our patients can’t afford a car or pay for other transportation. They don’t have friends or family that can help. When the time comes to leave our hospital and go home, they have no way to get there. Thanks to you, Father’s endowment pays for them to get back home. Every year over 500 people receive transportation assistance thanks to your generosity!

We recently had a patient who suffered a severe health episode while traveling on a bus from Minneapolis to Chicago. She was brought to Sacred Heart where she was promptly admitted. Thankfully, she made a full recovery, but she now found herself in a strange city with no way to get home. She had spent all she had on the original bus ticket, and wasn’t sure what to do. WE LIVE IN A TRULY AMAZING COMMUNITY. THANKS TO YOU AND MANY OTHER GENEROUS DONORS, WE ARE RENOVATING WOMEN AND INFANTS SERVICES! You recently heard from Stephanie Fey about the incredible care her family received at our facility. She and her husband Jim gave a gift in honor of each of their kids, and we have had many other donors do the same. Many mentioned an experience they or a loved one had at our hospital, and the stunning care they received was always at the top of the list.

Here is another mother that said HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital is family – in this case, literally. Claire Wilson is the new mother of Joshua Rolla Wilson, born 7/26/16. He weighed seven pounds fifteen ounces and had big beautiful blue eyes. Another fun fact about Joshy Wilson: he’s the nephew of one of the editors of this newsletter!

“When my nephew was being born I couldn’t help but appreciate how awesome it is to work for a hospital,” said Ian Jeffries, Annual Giving Specialist. “It was so special to have the newest member of my family brought into the world by my hospital family.”

Claire and her husband, Glenn, were extremely happy with the birth experience they had. “The staff at Sacred Heart gave me an empowering birth experience,” said Claire. “They encouraged me to do what my body was made to do, and that erased all my fear of labor.” She also appreciates how Sacred Heart gives back to local non-profits, such as APPLE Pregnancy Care Center, and wanted to support the hospital.

“When we were discharged, I was terrified about going home,” remembers Claire. “How was I going to take care of this little life? One of our nurses, Teresa, helped me secure Joshy in the car seat safely, and then she gave me a big hug and said, ‘You’re going to do great, Mama!’ She has no idea how encouraging that was. I still get emotional thinking about it.”

We pride ourselves on the extraordinary care provided at our hospital, but we haven’t done it alone. It’s your support that allows us to take care of these new parents and babies. Thank you so much for your gift. You can still give to ensure that we have the best facility to match our already exceptional care.

EVERY YEAR HSHS SACRED HEART HOSPITAL INVITES MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY TO JOIN OUR COLLEAGUES IN DONATING COATS AND BLANKETS. WINTER IN WISCONSIN IS HARD ENOUGH WHEN YOU HAVE WHAT YOU NEED – IT MAKES IT THAT MUCH HARDER WHEN YOU DON’T. At Sacred Heart we want to take care of our community. We partner with King’s Closet every year to ensure that families dealing with financial hardship have proper snow gear to get them through the winter. There is a big need in our community and you, our generous donors, responded admirably.

Mary Pengra, director of Volunteer Services, runs this event every year. “I have met many families that have been blessed by the coat drive,” said Mary. “Imagine you lost your job and have no money.

You’re having trouble putting food on the table and making rent. Now winter is coming and you can’t afford proper snow gear.

Where do you turn?”Thankfully, we take care of each other in the Chippewa Valley. Mary then went on to share this story: “I met a young lady who was a single mother. Her minimum wage job wasn’t enough to provide for her family, so she decided to go back to school and make a better life for herself and her children. While she was getting her degree, she was paying for food, rent, school and child care. On top of that her family needed new coats. She found out about the coat drive and was able to get each of her children something to keep them warm. She was extremely grateful to everyone who contributed. Thank you!”

Donors light up our garden with the memories of loved ones

The holidays are a wonderful time – a time to be with family, friends and loved ones. It can also be bittersweet when we remember those we have loved and lost. The annual Love-Lights Blessing, an event put on by the Volunteer Partners of HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital, offers comfort to families mourning the loss of a loved one.

Sharing the WarmthCommunity joins together to provide coats and blankets for 210 needy families

LIGHTSLove

LIGHTSLove Community members donate to receive white or blue lights

in memory of the deceased, a red or green light in honor of the living or a gold light to honor someone in the military. The event is preceded by a service in the Sacred Heart Chapel. All of the proceeds go back to The Healing Place. We have committed to care for our patients and their loved ones even after they leave our hospital. The Healing Place, which is fully supported by you, is just one of the ways this is accomplished.

Love-Lights is a reflection of how much our community cares and supports each other. We want to thank you for sharing your love with our hospital. It’s your support that allows us to add this special kind of care. During this holiday season, let’s be grateful for the family we have around us and never forget those that have gone before. If you want to know more about our Love-Lights ceremony please call 715-717-4255.

SHNLOCT16Thank you!

HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital is proud to have Spiritual Care Chaplains available for our patients and their families 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Monsignor Klimek established the Spiritual Care Department in 1972. For 45 years he brought hope and peace to the sick and dying. Our experienced and compassionate chaplains faithfully carry on his vital ministry. Such was the case when a chaplain visited a woman before her routine colonoscopy and offered a short prayer. He was surprised to be called back to the room less than an hour later. The routine procedure had taken a shocking turn when cancer was found.

The chaplain tenderly held the woman’s hand as tears streamed down her face. He stayed with her until her loved ones arrived, and then offered a heartfelt prayer for strength and courage. A few weeks later, the woman returned to the hospital for surgery. The first thing she asked for was a visit from the chaplain for prayer. She knew first-hand the hope and healing that is offered daily at Sacred Heart Hospital. Thank you for supporting our ministry. Your help allows us to provide more than medical expertise – we can also provide hope right when it is needed most.
