Introduction: MIRC for NIH Research “Networks”• New U54 Program Announcements establish multi-institutional,

inter-disciplinary consortia• Consortia are formed to pool expertise, validate approaches,

forge common instrumentation platforms, and rapidly translate promising new medical imaging technologies toward clinical trials.

• One such consortia is the “Breast Cancer Diffuse Optical Imaging” (BCDOI) network, sponsored by the NCI’s “Networks for Translational Research: Optical Imaging” (NTROI). – 5 year, $18M program started Sept. 2003– UCI (B. Tromberg, PI), MIT/MGH, Dartmouth, UPENN, SCR, U. Illinois, NIH

• This talk introduces the BCDOI’s plans for developing a MIRC-based infra-structure to support multi-institutional imaging research

• Our extensions to MIRC, called C-MIRC (“C” for “Collaboration), will be made in a general way to support multi-institutional imaging research projects

• The spirit of C-MIRC is to provide a “Collaborative Lab Notebook” to enable the multi-institutional team to function as a seamless organization – we invite your suggestions!

The Data can be in many formats and containers, including DICOM/PACS, but also unstructured documents – whatever is convenient to the researcher.

(e.g., Multimodal Fusion)

(e.g., MR/Optical Fusion, or Tomosynthesis/Optical Fusion)

(e.g., MR/Optical with UPENN imager using ICG contrast)

As a result we get the records found as a tree.

To make the tree simpler, we can change the hierachy level to Experiment.

Next Steps

• Sept 2004: Project started• Currently refining user interface concepts and data

architecture with university partners• Jan 2005: First MIRC system deployed to “get feet wet”• June 2005; First C-MIRC deployed to UPENN• Oct 2005: begin deploy C-MIRC to all consortia members,

expand functionality based on feedback during the next year.

• We welcome your feedback!

NOMIC Functionality Overview

• Use RSNA MIRC multi-site web technology for sharing, distributing and collecting medical experiment data

• While NOMIC focuses on the experiment hierarchy model, MIRC focuses on the teaching document model. They have shared data elements.

• NOMIC will function as a collaboratory lab notebook (CLN) to support experiment submission, query and collection among multiple NOMIC sites

• NOMIC can exchange experiment records over the internet using MIRC based XML Schema

CLN Specific Services

• Experiment Submit Service: Link data from PACS/FTP/File Servers to RDBMS.

• Experiment Collection Service: Automatic collecting experitment data from multiple NOMIC sites; The output forms of collected data will be based on format criteria such as Excel and CVS

• CLN Plugin Service: Interface for advanced lab data online analysis.
