HistoryMiriam: The Learning Disability Experts traces our history of service to the St. Louis community back more than 100 years. Chartered in 1910 as “Miriam No.17,” the local chapter of the national Jewish women’s organization, United Order True Sisters, Miriam has always been dedicated to addressing our area’s unmet needs. Over the years our pioneering programs included a rehabilitation hospital, books on tape for the visually impaired, and cancer services, with our focus evolving as each need gained public awareness and saw increased services.

In 1956, Miriam School was established to serve children with developmental disabilities. Following the establishment of Special School District and other public school special education programs, Miriam School’s focus changed in 1962 to serve children with complex learning disabilities and has remained there since.

The school program is designed for children in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade who have learning, speech/language, sensory/motor, and attention disabilities. Through a team approach, small class size, and specialized instruction, Miriam School provides a variety of accommodations and curriculum modifications designed to meet the academic needs and support the social skills development of each of its 96 students.

In September 2007, Miriam Learning Center opened to provide services to students, ages three to 18 years, who wish to remain in their current educational environment but need specialized in-school, after-school, or weekend support services to meet their potential. Miriam Learning Center annually serves 600 children who attend over 120 different private, public, or parochial schools, or are homeschooled — including programming to our ten outreach partner schools in St. Louis City.

Miriam: The Learning Disability Experts improves the quality of life for children with learning disabilities and their families through innovative and comprehensive programs.

Miriam SchoolFor more than 50 years Miriam School has been helping students with complex learning disabilities recognize and successfully meet their potential. Our small and nurturing environment welcomes 96 children ages pre-kindergarten through eighth grade with average to above average intelligence who have learning differences in the areas of speech, language, motor, sensory, attention, academics or social communication. Our dedicated and experienced special education and therapy staff work collaboratively to develop a learning plan personalized to each child.

Miriam School students thrive in a 10:1 ratio within a classroom specifically chosen based on their academic and social needs. Our special educators differentiate and modify the curriculum for each student and our speech/language and occupational therapists provide support both inside and outside of the classroom. Miriam students are encouraged to be inquisitive, creative, cooperative, motivated and respectful learners who not only make academic gains, but also develop as a whole child with the self-advocacy skills necessary to succeed in education and in life.

The progress that our son has made in just three years at Miriam is progress that we never thought he would experience in his whole lifetime.”

Miriam L CenterMiriam Learning Center (MLC) opened in 2007 as a resource for students, ages three through 18, who can remain in their current educational environment but need specialized support because of difficulties related to speech, listening, reading, math, sensory or motor skills as well as other challenges such as an autism spectrum disorder. MLC annually serves 600 children who attend over 120 different private, public, or parochial schools, or are homeschooled — including students in our ten St. Louis City partner schools. The MLC staff of trained and certified specialists provides diagnostic testing and evaluations, occupational and speech therapies, and tutoring. For families, that means simplifying services without compromising quality, and ensuring that their child receives the individualized attention that can make a real difference in learning and growing academically, socially, and emotionally.

Since my daughter started at Miriam I’ve seen a jump in her academic success and also in her self-confidence. The staff has shown how much they truly care about her and want her to succeed.”

Who We Serve

My son doesn’t want to miss one day at Miriam. He really feels like he has a place here…like he belongs. I was worried he was going to have difficulties succeeding in life but I no longer have those concerns. He’s going to be okay.”

Learning disabilities know no boundaries. Learning disabilities know no boundaries and the 700 students served each year by Miriam School and Miriam Learning Center reside in 80 different zip codes within a 70-mile radius of St. Louis. Miriam: The Learning Disability Experts is committed to making our programs accessible to all children, ages 4-18, who can benefit from our specialized services, and we annually provide $800,000 in need-based tuition assistance to 50% of the families we serve.

Established 60 years ago as one of St. Louis’ first resale stores, the Miriam Switching Post in Maplewood is where antique dealers shop to find vintage mahogany, primitives and collectibles; home stagers find clean, inexpensive, and stylish furnishings; decorators bring their clients to shop for one-of-a-kind pieces; and students furnish an entire apartment for pennies on the dollar. The Switching Post’s eclectic and ever-changing inventory comes from donations and through the empty out services the store provides for households in transition. All proceeds from the Switching Post benefit Miriam’s programs for children with learning disabilities, and in 2013-14, the store contributed over $515,000.
