“We are just thankful that we chose the right product from day one” Ettienne Knipe, CEO, Linteg Technologies

‘’BDCOM has really become a superstar technology vendor for the South African market’’-

Marco de Ru, Commercial Manager, MiRO Distribution

The Challenge Linteg Technologies rolled out a large new fibre-to-the-home network to over 1800 homes in Jackal Creek using BDCOM fibre networking equipment from MiRO Distribution. The main objective was to provide clients with affordable, high-speed open-access internet, at a fair cost and within a short installation window. Before they could achieve this, they had to overcome a major obstacle- the original network.

From initial investigations it was uncovered that in order to overcome the first obstacle, a complete clean-up of the existing core infrastructure was needed, starting with the network cabinet. Once the cabinets had been revamped Linteg had provided the Home Owners Association of Jackal Creek with enough assurance that the rest of the project would be handled with the same level of professionalism and efficiency.

Following the revamp of the network cabinet it was time to select a desired model and this where MiRO Distribution came in.

“The original model was a point-to-point (PtP) topology with a hybrid design of fibre through copper. The original network that was built might have been sufficient for the era it was built in, but it was not a good stable network for today’s high capacity demands that clients are accustomed to.”

The SolutionLinteg Technologies turned towards MiRO Distribution who recommended BDCOM networking solutions due to its low costs and high-performance reputation. The BDCOM solutions were made up of three main hardware components, an OLT, a SFP Module and ONU devices.

The BDCOM OLT was used to receive the internet uplink from the ISP and through the SFP Module broadcasts the internet signal along one fibre signal. This SFP Module allows for multiple splits in order to increase the amount of client devices. The BDCOM ONU’s were used as a media-converter, allowing the fibre light to be converted into Ethernet signal once the home owners plug their Wi-Fi routers into the ONU.

“The chosen GPON solution from BDCOM, is point-to-multipoint, pushing multiple streams of data along a single fibre cable, into each unit and then co-existing with a separate fibre link for your decoder or explorer, offering CATV services at the customer’s request”

Supporting BDCOM’s promise of a lifetime warranty, Ettienne and Francois concluded their interview with some sensible advice, from a business owners’ perspective, for similar projects: “Whatever needs to be done can be done. Don’t just give

up, adapt to what is available to you and always build your site as if it is your last site.” From a technical side, Francois added “I would advise proper planning and whatever solution you choose, future proof it. Don’t build to earn. Build to last.”
