Let’s face it: therejust aren’t manysmall islands the

size of Saint Barth with amusic festival the magni-tude of the one organizedby Frances DeBroff andher daughter Jill. Cele-brating its 29th anniver-sary with concerts fromJanuary 4-27, this festivalwill be one of the lon-gest, spread out over aperiod of four weeks.“I’d really like to pointout that Jill did 99% ofthe work for this festivalthis year, she has beenthe real big force behindit all,” says DeBroff.

“Things are planned sofar in advance we arealready working on2014,” DeBroff adds.“And we always seems toexpand. People have newideas, and this year wehave more artists thanwe’ve ever had, about 78of them, we used to haveabout 50. Finding hou-

sing for all of them isalways a challenge, butwe always manage.”

Kicking off on January 4and 5 with dancers fromParis, then moving on tochamber music, orches-tral concerts, jazz, and a

performance of Puccini’s“La Boheme,” on operanight, the festival pre-sents its usual level ofall-star line-up. Butbeyond the performancesis another aspect to thefestival, that of personalrelationships. DeBroffcites a music studentfrom the St Barth Har-mony music school,Noreen Aubin. “After shegraduated from highschool, she wanted tolearn more English andwork with her violin, soour great violinist Jenni-fer Frautschi and her hus-band Eric Ruske, invitedher to their home in Bos-ton. “She had violin les-sons, and spoke Frenchto their young daughter,Siena, who also takes

classes at the school inLorient when in StBarth,” explains DeBroff.“In Saint Barth, theAubin family is housingJennifer, Eric, and theirdaughter. These are thelovely little sidebars tothe music.”

On the music front, thenew conductor this yearis Jean-Luc Tinguadfrom Paris: “I met himwhen he was in Pitts-burgh conducting thePittsburgh Opera,” saysDeBroff. “Our oboeplayer, Alex Klein, saidhe wanted to play theoboe rather than conduct,so I told him I met agreat young Frenchman, speaks several languages. He’s young for a

conductor, but multi-talen-ted. He orchestrated, playedthe piano and did production for Debussy’s“Boite à jouxjoux,” inFrance for our children’sprogram, last summer. Itwas very successful. It isthe only piece Debussywrote for his onlydaughter, first as a bal-let, and then narrationwas added. It teacheschildren the differentsounds of music andthe instruments of theorchestra.” It will beperformed onJanuary 21 for thechildren of StBarth.

So what brought DeBroff toSaint Barth in the first place?“My husband,” she explains.“He was a stamp collector inhis youth, with had a curiosityfor travel. We had been to a lotof unusual places that put outstamps. He had a pacqueboatstamp from Saint Barth andwanted to know where it was. That was 43 years ago, andonce I put my foot down onthat grass landing strip, thatwas that.”

The 2013 St Barth Music Fes-tival is dedicated to thememory of Frances’ late hus-band, Morton DeBroff, whopassed away in November2012.

The open kitchen at theCarl Gustav Hotel is therealm of French chef

Emmanuel Motte, whowas raised in the Frenchregion of Normandy, inCalvados to be exact. His

culinary travels broughthim to Saint Barth 15years ago, the past eightof which have been at theCarl Gustav. After com-pleting his apprentice-ship as a chef in France,Motte worked in Eng-land. “Then I reallywanted to go to work inJapan,” he recalls. Butoffers of cooking in ahotel with 800 rooms didnot appeal to hisappetite, so he sent aresumé to the Guanahaniand his island adventureswere under way.

“I had to adapt my wayof thinking to the rhythmof deliveries in theCaribbean,” Motteexplains. “Products fromFrance and the UnitedStates do not arrive everyday. I also leaned to workwith a lot of local prod-ucts, especially fish. It isa point of honor for me touse as much local fish aspossible,” adds Motte, who works with SaintBarth fisherman PatrickLaplace, and serveseverything from mahi-mahi and wahoo to reeffish. “Saint Barth is aland in the sea, why nottake advantage of it?”asks the chef.

“Meat travels better fromabroad than fish,” notesMotte, who has Wagyubeef from Japan on themenu, served French-style with puréed pota-toes with truffles. Motte

also creates his ownpatisserie recipes, withone of his signaturedesserts a Caribbeansnowball, a globe ofmeringue filled withdiced mango and pineap-ple, passion fruit sorbet, and mango/passion fruitfoam—a perfect exam-ples of integrating localfruit into a French menuwith Caribbean andAsian accents.

“I like to work with amix of textures,” notesthe chef, who is wont toadd a touch of meringueor crumble to a frozendessert for a little“crunch.” In addition tothe fixed menu, Mottealso offers a mystery tast-ing menu. “It’s for peo-ple who are a bit moreadventurous about food,”he explains. “You don’tknow what you are goingto eat until it is served. We ask about likes anddislikes and any foodallergies. Many peoplelike the idea once theyhave tried it.”

The open kitchen was aconscious choice whenthe Carl Gustaf was reno-vated several years ago.“There aren’t too manyopen kitchens on theisland,” says Motte. “Wethought it would be inter-esting for people towatch us as we work.”

What do you see as your company’s greatest successin 2012?Sibarth Real Estate managed tomaintain and reinforce its posi-tion as leader of the St Barth realestate market by consistentlybringing in new business fromabroad, and this throughout theyear. Our targeted marketing out-reach has been considerablyboosted, and our 72-page annualcompany publication has reachedan even higher level, setting usapart from our competitors. Inaddition to all our regular sales, two significant transactions werecompleted in excess of 10 Mil-lion USD, a villa in Colombierand a parcel of land on Flamandsbeach.

What do you see assome of thebiggest opportuni-ties in the comingyear ahead? We have alreadyseen a renewedinterest from theUS market thisyear, and we areconfident that

this trend will continue in 2013.This historically important seg-ment of our clientele could bringan even higher energy to ourproperty market, which has bene-fited in the last years of thearrival from investors from manyparts of the globe, includingEastern Europe and South America.Other factors do count of course:the infrastructure continues to beimproved in St Barth and our taxenvironment is investmentfriendly.

What changing market aspectswill have the greatest impact onthe way you conduct business in2013?The economic challenges of thepast years have undoubtedlyaffected the workings of our mar-ket. In St Barth however, withthe unspoiled magic and theeffervescence of this uniqueisland, the desire of our clients toacquire their dream property, thepleasure of enjoying it, and forg-ing closer bonds remains con-stant as time goes by.

What is it about you and your company that sets youapart from the rest?An expertise of 35 years dedicat-ed to real estate transactions in StBarth provides us with in-depthknowledge of the island, of itsproperty market and of its mainactors. Sibarth Real Estate is thesole agency on the island dedicat-ed to property sales, with thelargest professional team. The sixmembers of the staff most direct-ly involved in sales and market-ing combine over 70 years ofexperience in property transac-tions on the island. We have alsodeveloped over the years thelargest network of powerful glob-al affiliations, creating the differ-ence by the unparalleled expo-sure offered worldwide to ourfirm’s listings.

What are the most importantquestions a client should askbefore selecting an agentin your market? The client should in fact askquestions to the agent, and expecthonest answers from the profes-sionals. Any discussion aboutvaluations does require experi-ence, hence the questions. Arethey a legally registered estateagent, with a local office on StBarth open to the public? Howmany sales have they completedin the last year, and the last threeyears? How many sales were inexcess of 3 M€, or in excess of 5 M€?

Everybody likes objects; every-body likes different objects. Itcomes down to what objects youwant to put in your art... I likethem all: high, low, used, new, whichever works. —Eden RockGallery with Larry Gagosian ispleased to present an exhibitionof tables by Urs Fischer. Born in 1973 in Zurich, Fischerstudied at the Schule für Gestal-tung, Zurich. He now lives andworks in New York City. Hiswork is included in many impor-tant public and private collectionsworldwide. Recent major exhibi-tions include Kunsthaus Zurich,Centre Pompidou, in Paris, Kun-sthalle Wien, Vienna, as well asthe Biennale di Venezia in 2003,2007, and 2011. Continuously

searching for new sculpturalsolutions, Fischer has built hous-es out of bread; enlivened empty

space with mechanistic jokes;deconstructed objects and thenreplicated them; and transferred

He combines dar-ing formal adventuresin space, scale, andmaterial with a mor-dant sense of humor.Reinvesting tradition-al art historical genres(still life, portraits, nudes, landscapes, and interiors) with anabundance of rich andsurprising forms—suchas cast sculptures andassemblages, paintings, digital montages, spa-tial installations, kinetic objects, and texts—he ceaselesslyexplores the intersection of artand everyday life. The exhibition title, a collision offurniture and body parts, gives le

corps exquis another turn of thescrew. The works to which thetitle alludes are tables that com-bine large resin-coated pho-tomontages with multicoloredsteel geometric bases. The jokeysurrealist montages juxtapose

images both foundand manipulated—apair of sausages, acartoon snail, a graffi-ti-covered wall, anopen mouth, a HongKong supermarket.Blurring the distinc-tions between photog-raphy, collage, sculp-ture, and furniture, thetables are objects bothaesthetic and useful, filling the gallery witha presence that is at

once visually arrestingand socially convivial.
