Tell me more about CSAPA?The CSAPA is an un-timed, individually administered
assessment, linked to the Colorado Model Content Standards and aligned with
the expanded benchmarks. The CSAPA assessments are comprised of
individual items often using picture symbols as a response methodology.
The primary purpose of the assessment program is to determine the level at which Colorado students meet the Expanded
Benchmarks which are linked to the Colorado Model Content Standards in the content areas assessed.
The data should be used to keep abreast of individual student progress
toward reaching achievement in the content areas

CSAPA Test Structure
Who’s involved with CSAPA?Colorado Department of Education mandates
the administration of this assessment .
Jan Blair & Jen Marsh are the Directors of CSAPA at the District level, they determine eligibility of students.
Chrisy Ralston is the District CSAPA Assessment Coordinator.
All test distribution, administration, processes, and security go through Chrisy. Every school has a School Assessment Coordinator (SAC) within
their school who oversees administration and security at the school level.

Test examiner should be the person who knows the student best, not just because they are on you caseload.
Test examiners must be trained annually
Para professionals may be present but may not administer the assessment
anyone in the assessment testing area need to be trained regarding CSAPA protocols and
must sign a confidentiality agreement…
The test examiner is the person who administers the CSAPA test. The test examiner must be a licensed educator who knows the student best. Volunteers may NOT be used to administer CSAPA tests.
• Additional staff, including paraprofessionals may assist in the administration of the assessment as needed.
• Test examiners must read the instructions and familiarize themselves with the test prior to administering the test to students.
• Any CSAPA Expanded Accommodation needed, should be prepared prior to the administration.
• Since test examiners rate the student’s level of independence, training is required before administering the test. Examiners must be trained every year.
• Test examiners may NOT assess relatives.
• Each student is provided with a “Pizza Box” with all the materials needed for the assessment.
Test Examiners may not reuse materials for multiple students.
CSAPA Test Examiners
Security of CSAPA* Testing protocols are NOT to be reproduced
or removed from your building.
* Student responses may NOT be recorded anywhere other than the administration protocol and the rating form.
* No cell phones, digital cameras, or video cameras are allowed in the testing room during testing.
* Thoroughly review the CSAPA Test Examiners Manual prior to testing, and understand the procedures needed to administer the assessment. If you are unsure or need clarification, please call Chrisy.
CSAPA materials must be accounted for and stored in a secure and locked location before, during and
after testing . NOT IN YOUR CLASSROOM!
CSAPA test proctors will need access to the examiners guide and student materials in
advance to prepare any expanded accommodations and organize manipulative materials.
These materials and accommodations must be returned to your
School Coordinator and secured daily.

CSAPA “think ahead” tidbits Allow yourself time (before testing) to prepare for your
CSAPA Expanded Accommodations.
Remember this is an one-on-one administration.
There are no time limits or restrictions on time.
Allow time for breaks.
Once an “item” has been presented, it must be completed BEFORE stopping and cannot be revisited.
Make sure your environment is “test ready”.
If you have a “PARENT REFUSAL”, we must have a letter from the parents every year. I also have a form you could utilize if the parent’s don’t want to send a formal letter.

Students use their mode of expressive language, which may involve Assistive technology devices

The use of a scribe as an adaptation for the writing
assessment is not allowed as it changes the construct of what is
being measured.
For writing, the IEP team may consider providing the student with a wide variety of picture

or the use of a computer.

The Woes of Chrisy
Time to get nervous – things that went bad in the 2010
submission 8 people didn’t put names on the Rating Forms (answer booklet) 5 people did not fill out their SGL & GIS 2 over achievers filled in the middle section of the back of the book 3 people used CSAP labels on their CSAPA booklets 3 people didn’t’ fill in the header portion on the SGL/GIS 3 people used pen somewhere on the booklet 4 people did not fill in the Accommodation and Invalidation area 1 school used only one booklet to test all students 1 school didn’t verify grade levels before testing and in turn invalidated
a students assessment due to the wrong grade being tested. 4 people need to go back to bubble school and practice on “better
bubbles”. Numerous students moved in/out of district, though Chrisy was not

to return tests. We need to account for ALL students tested, even parent refusals,
section 8’s, etc.

Six CSAPA Examiners chose to use INK when filling out their test booklet and rating form
Three CSAPA Examiners coded students as no response, then gave them a level of response. NO REPSONSE = LEVEL 1 There are no other choices!
Two schools used CSAP student labels on the rating form instead of CSAPA
Two schools did not fill out their GIS or SGL forms – This is required for submission
Several overachievers bubbled in student info which was already in label
I need to know when students are taking BOTH CSAP and CSAPA. Which content will be tested where?
Student must be tested at the grade level that is recorded in SASI
Used a student label which had the wrong grade listed*
The SASID is a TEN digit number not a five digit number with zeros 0000065987 which is the district perm number
Just because a name does not fit in the boxes, you CANNOT change the spelling so it does fit
Answers must be in both the test booklet AND the Rating form
You MUST bubble which accommodations were used and the Test Invalidation section of the rating form.
