Changes needed to be made at municipal hall to move Mission in a new direction, said Mayor Randy Hawes after the district announced the dismissal of its chief adminis-trative officer.

The termination was immediate, added Hawes, noting details of former CAO Ken Bjorgaard’s severance package are personal.

“It will be reflected in the financial statements. Those

Local skateboarders are enthusiastic about the district’s plans to build a new skateboard park, with many saying it can’t come soon enough.

Mission grow-ops‘substantially high’Carol AunMISSION RECORD

Mayor Randy Hawes hears complaints about marijuana grow oper-ations in the commu-nity almost on a weekly basis. He doesn’t know if they are legal or ille-gal ones, but either way, he wants to make sure these operations are housed in a facility with appropriate wiring and electrical hook ups.

“The complaints never stop,” said Hawes, noting the residents he spoke with this week have put their homes up for sale. “People are moving because they can’t stand it anymore. They’re being driven out of their home and we need to do something about it.”

Hawes hopes to put a system in place where at least homes are being inspected for electrical safety.

A Public Safety Inspec-tion Team (PSIT) oper-ated in Mission from 2008 to 2011 conducting safety inspections on homes throughout the community based on unusually high power usage.

Hawes said PSIT didn’t work because it was also a cost recovery program.

“Homeowners were charged $5,000 even if they suspected there was a grow-op in the past,” said Hawes, noting perhaps the home had been used as one by a previous owner. “That’s not fair.”

Hawes explained Surrey’s Electrical Fire Safety Initiative has been instrumental in eliminating marijuana grow-ops in that com-munity. Surrey put the program in place in 2005 and the number of grow ops dropped by 82 per

cent in four years.“No bill is handed out

in Surrey,” said Hawes. “It’s about safety.”

Hawes believes with-out any bylaws in place, the problem in Mission will get worse.

At Monday night’s council meeting, RCMP Cpl. Shane Holmquist explained the federal government began the medical marijuana pro-gram because of a court ruling that decided pro-hibition of it was uncon-stitutional.

The Marijuana Med-ical Access Regulations (MMAR) was created in 2001 to allow Canadians with a permit to possess marijuana and produce it for personal use.

“Health Canada thought they could man-age it, but it spiralled out of control,” said Holm-quist. “The program expanded exponentially, and Health Canada couldn’t keep up.”

Court cases allowed people to grow the prod-uct for themselves, then allowed producers to grow for others. There is a maximum of four licenses per property.

Under MMAR rules, there were 477 house grows in 2002 in Canada, but by 2012, there were 22,000 and by 2014, there were 57,799. If house grows are allowed to

continue, it is projected there will be 433,688 by 2024 across the country.

According to police, there are 670 house grows in Mission, 687 in Abbotsford, and 694 in Chilliwack. When the numbers are broken down by postal codes, the Mission area has a “substantially high” number compared to the rest of the Lower Mainland region, said Holmquist.

MMAR was repealed last year and now Health Canada has no author-ity to conduct inspec-tions on properties with licensed grows.

Hawes knows some people view home inspections as a viola-tion, but he says he is more sympathetic to people who are living beside these unwanted neighbours.

Medicinal grow-ops with a license are legal, but inspectors should be allowed to make sure any adjustments to electrical wiring in the homes are safe, said Hawes.

The federal govern-ment brought in new rules last year outlawing personal home grows in favour of commercial licenses, but their move is being challenged in court. The trial begins in Vancouver on Feb. 23.

RCMP Cpl. Shane Holmquist spoke to Mission Council on Monday. He explained the federal government began the medical marijuana program because of a court ruling that decided prohibition of it was unconstitutional. CAROL AUN PHOTO

2011 municipal elec-tion when all but one member of council was removed from office. The most recent elec-tion in November 2014, had a similar result.

In the three years Bjorgaard worked as CAO for Mission, he oversaw a restructur-ing at city hall which resulted in $600,000 of

saving in salaries, and $12 million of Mission’s $19-million debt paid off.

He was also at the helm when staff morale and departures were issues, resulting in nine senior managers leav-ing their posts. Between 2012 and spring of 2014, 34 full-time employees had resigned, while 13 retired.

Earlier this week, retired Mission admin-istrator Glen Robertson was appointed interim CAO for Mission on a month to month basis. Robertson served as CAO for 22 years before he retired almost three years ago.

“I’m glad to be of service when asked by council,” said Robert-son, who was present

at the Feb. 16 council meeting.

Robertson, who was in the process of subdi-viding his property, has put all development activities relating to his property on hold.

The search for a top administrator will begin immediately and is anticipated to take three to four months to complete.

“The older boards love to teach the younger ones because they know how hard it is,” said Nicholson, who recently bought a new board and plans to introduce the sport to his children.

Nicholson also wants to look into building a pump track alongside the new skate park to give young mountain bikers a facility to prac-tice on.

“Mission has world-class mountain bike trails, but there is no succession to use them.”

“If we combine it with a skateboard park, maybe it won’t cost us as much.”

The race for the Con-servative nomination in the new riding of Mission-Matsqui-Fraser Canyon is on.

Brad Vis, Doris Wood-man-McMillan and Korky Neufeld, all of Abbotsford, have already announced their intentions to run, and recently, Paul Rede-kopp, Liv Grewal, and Morley Anderson — better known as Andy Anderson — also put their names forward.

A date for the nomi-nation vote has not yet been set.

The Liberal party has already selected their candidate for the upcoming elec-

tion, Abbotsford busi-nessman Jatinder (Jati) Sidhu.

Art Green of Hope will run for the Green party.

Conservative MP Randy Kamp, who is currently representing the Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge-Mission riding in Ottawa, announced his retirement almost two

weeks ago after serving four terms.

Maple Ridge-Mission MLA Marc Dalton and Kamp’s executive assis-tant Mike Murray are seeking the Conserva-tive nomination in the Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge riding.

Dalton will sit as an independent mem-ber of the Legislature

during the nomination process, but will con-tinue to support the government. Dalton plans to return to cau-cus if he is unsuccessful at securing the Conser-vative nomination.

While there has been speculation of a spring election, it is expected that voters will head to the polls in the fall.

OPINION Published & printed by Black Press Ltd. at 33047 First Avenue, Mission V2V 1G2

In a recent, unanimous decision, the Supreme Court of Canada has thrown out the Criminal Code provisions which deal with assisting people to commit suicide. It is a stark reversal of the court’s decision, by a 5-4 margin in 1994, to uphold that aspect of Canadian law.  This time around, the abrupt change was likely strongly influenced by the chief justice, Beverley McLachlin, who was one of the dissenting judges 21 years ago. The court has given the federal government one year to come up with new laws to deal with the issue.

This timetable is clearly far too ambi-tious. A federal election is planned for October, and if there ever was an issue that requires careful study and much consulta-tion in advance of a law being proposed, this is it. Try doing that in an election year.

Most surveys suggest that about 80 per cent of Canadians are in favour of some form of assisted dying or euthanasia for people suffering from terminal illness, although just what they actually favour varies widely.

Are they in favour of the Dutch or Bel-gian approach, where teens and people suffering from depression can be put to death by physicians? Or do they favour the far more measured approach adopted in the state of Oregon, where the patient must request drugs, both verbally and in writing, which can end their lives, and take them themselves — and only after a host of other safeguards.

The issue requires careful study and more time.

WE DON’T MISS A THINGNew Tax breaks for Canadian families.

**Availability and amounts will vary according to each family’s specific circumstances. See an H&R Block tax professional for details.

You could claim up to $2,000!*

Tax Tips For Families With ChildrenChild Amount: Families will benefit from a $2,255 child amount for each child under the age of 18 for the last time in 2014. This will result in a federal tax saving of $338 per child. And if one parent cannot use the entire amount to lower their tax payable, the unused amount can be transferred to a spouse or common-law partner.

Credit for being active: The Children’s Fitness Amount is a non-refund-able credit is worth up to $1,000 for children under the age of 16 enrolled in an eligible program of physical activity. Not every program meets the eligibility guidelines so you need to ensure you know the requirements. Make sure you keep your receipts. Disabled children will also qualify for the credit if they are under 18.

Artistic credit: The Children’s Arts Credit is another non-refundable credit worth up to $500 for children under the age of 16 enrolled in an eligible program. This could include language classes, Girl Guides or Scouts, art classes or ballet lessons. Again, keep your receipts to make the claim.

Universal Child Care Benefit: This is available to any family with children regardless of their household income. It used to be available only for children under the age of six. However, effective January 2015, a new $60 per month component will be paid for children over five and under 18. The component for children under six will also be increased from $100 to $160 per month. Parents will receive a retroactive payment in July 2015 for the enhanced amounts for the first six months of the year UCCB is taxable in the hands of the lower-income spouse.

Family Tax Cut: For families where one spouse earns more than the other and have at least one child, they may transfer up to $50,000 in taxable income to help reduce their family tax liability. The maximum claim is $2,000.

Save for future education: Designed to help save for a child’s post-sec-ondary education, parents can make up to $50,000 RESP lifetime contribution. Canada Education Savings Grant (CESG) per year is $500.

Canada Learning Bond: To help lower income families, the Government provides $500 in a CLB at birth for children whose families are entitled to the Nation-al Child Benefit Supplement. As long as the family is still entitled to the supplement, they will receive an additional $100 CLB each year until the age of 15.

Tax Tips For Canadians Over 65 Income split and save: Seniors are allowed to split up to half of their eligible pension income with a spouse or common-law partner. Income splitting allows some seniors to enjoy a significant tax reduction. In the situation where the lower-income spouse has very little income, the tax savings are substantial.

Get your benefits: Any senior receiving Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) through Old Age Security should file on time to ensure their benefits continue uninterrupted.

Transfer amounts: If your spouse is unable to completely offset his or her age amount, pension income and disability amount against tax payable, he or she may transfer the unused portion to your return.

Caregiver amount: If you live with your children and you are over 65, they may be able to claim a caregiver amount for you if your income is less than $20,002. If you are dependent on them due to an infirmity, they may claim you even if.you are under 65. In this case the income threshold will be $22,060. The caregiver amount is increased by the $2,058 family caregiver amount when the dependant is infirm.

Foreign pension income: Pensions from foreign countries may be subject to special tax treatment under the terms of a tax treaty. Always check with a tax professional to find out if the pension you receive from a foreign source is taxable in Canada.

Split your CPP and save: You may be able to split part of your CPP retirement benefits with your spouse depending on how long you lived together when you were contributing to the plan. This is an advantage if one senior is in a higher tax bracket than the other. However, to do so, you must apply to Human Re-sources & Social Development Canada using Form ISP-1002. It cannot be done at the time of tax preparation.

Medical expenses can add up: If you purchase medical insurance for a trip or wintering in another country, it is considered a medical expense. Medical expenses are calculated based on income so the lower income spouse should claim them. And if you have to travel to obtain medical treatment that was not available where you live, you may be able to claim the cost of transportation, meals and accommodation.

Let us help you find every available tax credit!

Black Press is pleased to announce that Kevin Mills has been appointed as the editor of the Mission Record.

Mills, a veteran jour-nalist, began his career more than 25 years ago as a reporter at the Mis-sion Record. Six months later, he was hired as a journalist for the Abbotsford News.

Mills spent the next 23 years at The News, learning every aspect of the industry from news, sports and arts cover-age to business and local politics.

Mills left The News

in 2013 to assume the role of editor at the Nel-son Star, a Black Press community newspa-per. Shortly after, he became editor of both the Star and the Castle-gar News.

While Nelson is a beautiful and diverse city, Mills said he is happy to return to the Fraser Valley, especially to Mission where his career began.

“I’m excited to return to my roots,” said Mills. “My entire family lives in the Fraser Valley area.”

He is married with

three sons and two grandchildren.

“I look forward to talking to the people of Mission to find out what issues are import-ant to them.”

Andrew Holota, who has served as editor of The Record and the Abbotsford News since 2013, will continue to have a close, active role in the editorial direc-tion of The Record as managing editor, and as part of his wider role as regional editorial manager for Black Press Lower Mainland.

Lions deliver energetic messageKevin MillsMISSION RECORD

Students at Silverdale elementary received an energetic lesson from a pair of unlikely teach-ers — B.C. Lions players Shawn Gore and Matt McGarva.

The Canadian Football League players were in Mission Monday to raise awareness about saving energy as part of the FortisBC Energy Cham-pions and Lions Pride programs.

The Lions mixed game playing with energy les-sons to keep the stu-dents interested in their message of environ-mental responsibility.

And while football may be their profession, both McGarva and Gore had a natural ability to connect with the kids.

“This is just fun, it’s loads of fun. It’s great to see the kids. I’ve been in this position where I was one of them and an athlete came and I got to see a different side to them. A side away from the sport,” said Gore.

He joined the pro-gram, not just because he believes in the mes-sage, but because he wants to be a positive role model for youth.

“I thinks it’s more about the energy than the actual message at

times,” he said, explain-ing that kids enjoy the fact that players are excited to be there and excited to present the information.

“We want them to be excited about the good things in life.”

According to Gore, the kids always surprise him, either with a ques-tion, or an answer.

“They are a lot more knowledgeable than we give them credit for… You really can’t beat it. It’s good to have a change and be able to do this in the off season.

Silverdale principal Jason Obert believes events like these are

important for their edu-cational aspects.

“It’s not just the information they learn about saving energy but also it gets the kids very excited and gives them the opportunity to see people they rec-ognize from outside of the school. Kids getting the opportunity to get excited about learning is always good.”

When the offer was issued by the Lions, Obert said his school jumped at the chance to host the event.

Along with the ener-gy-saving lessons, the Lions players hosted relay races and other

challenges to keep the students entertained and engaged.

Earlier in the day, the Lions were also at Mis-sion’s Windebank ele-mentary to spread the same message.

Now entering its fifth season, the FortisBC Energy Champions pro-gram is designed specif-ically for children in kin-dergarten through Grade 7, emphasizing the importance of environ-mental responsibility.

For a wrongdoer to be liable for negligence, the negligent act must have caused your injury. Sometimes that’s very clear. The de-fendant’s car rear-ends your vehicle and you suffer a neck injury as a result; it’s obvious the defendant’s negligence caused your whiplash. Other times it’s less apparent. Often, there is more than one potential cause of the injury.

Two Supreme Court of Canada cases have tried to clarify this complicated area of law.

In one, Ralph Hanke was bad-ly burned when he mistakenly placed the water hose into the gas tank of the ice surfacing machine he was operating at an ice rink. When hot water overfi lled the gas tank, vapourized gas was released into the air, causing an explosion and fi re. Ralph sued the maker and distributor of the machine, claim-ing the similar-looking water and gas tanks were placed close together and it was easy to confuse the two.

The Supreme Court of Canada said that the main test of causation is the “but for” test. You have to show that the injury would not have happened “but for” the negligent act or omission of the defendant. This test is in-tended to ensure that you only receive com-pensation where a “substantial connection” exists between the defendant’s conduct and your injury. So a defendant won’t be liable if your injury may be “due to other factors not connected to the defendant and not the fault of anyone.”

The court ultimately dismissed Ralph’s law-suit, using the “but for” test of causation. If Ralph hadn’t put the water hose into the gas tank, the explosion wouldn’t have occurred. Ralph knew which tank was which, and his own unfortunate carelessness caused his in-juries, not design defects of the ice machine.

In the second case, the Supreme Court of

Canada confi rmed that a defendant’s negli-gent act doesn’t have to be the only cause of your injury, so long as it’s a material contrib-uting factor.

Jon Athey was a 43-year old autobody re-pairman and bodyshop manager with minor back problems. He was involved in two motor vehi-cle accidents two months apart that left him with a stiff back and neck. Some months later, he went to a gym on his doctor’s advice, where he injured his lower back during warm-up exercises. He had to be hospitalized for three weeks for disc herniation surgery. While he recovered reasonably well, he couldn’t return to his former job,

and had to get another physically easier po-sition.

At trial, the BC Supreme Court decided that the two accidents only played a minor role in causing Jon’s disc herniation, and it fi xed the causation factor at 25% – reducing Jon’s com-pensation to 25% of what he would otherwise receive.

But the Supreme Court of Canada disagreed: a defendant’s wrongful act doesn’t have to be the sole cause of the injury for that defendant to be fully liable. In this case, there was one indivisible injury – the disc herniation. Any defendant who negligently caused or contrib-uted to it was fully liable. The accidents were a “necessary ingredient” in bringing about Jon’s disc herniation, and he recovered full compensation of $221,516.

If you’re injured as a result of another per-son’s wrongful or negligent act, your lawyer can advise you.

Mission Outlaws captain David McGowan and for-ward Ram Brar stand over Langley Knights’ goaltender Nickolas Trenciansky during Tuesday night’s playoff game. Mission lost 3-1. KEVIN MILLS PHOTO

Kevin MillsMISSION RECORD

The Mission City Outlaws began their 2015 playoff run on the wrong skate, drop-ping a 3-1 decision to the visiting Langley Knights on Tuesday night in Mission.

The loss puts Mis-sion down one game to none in the best of seven series.

While it was an evenly played contest, the Outlaws couldn’t seem to take advan-tage of their scoring opportunities.

Outlaws dropplayoff opener

Langley opened thescoring in the first period when JoshuaSmith found the netbehind Mission keeperBryce Phenix

The Outlaws tiedthe game at one whenKolby Steen scored, before the end of the first. In the middleframe, Langley’s DylanMcCann and MitchellBiermann scored toput the game away. TheKnights poured on thedefence in the third, not allowing Missionto get any closer.

“We just didn’t buryour chances, they did,”said Outlaws coach Brad Veitch.

“We played an OKgame. They caught us on our heels a little bit in the second periodbut other than that it was a pretty evenhockey game.”

The coach said his players needed to play a little more disci-plined style and stayaway from the penaltybox.

Special teams wasanother area thatseemed to hurt theOutlaws.

“We definitely at theend there, we stubbed our toe on the powerplay… We definitely have some work to dothere and game plan against them.”

The local squad hadlittle time to prepare for the next contest, which took place in Langley on Thursdaynight. The score was not available at press time.

“We have to adapt alittle bit to how theylike to stretch the ice and make sure we have good defensive coverage in our zone. Then I think we’ll befine,” said Veitch.

The two teams faceoff again tonight (Fri-day) in Langley, fol-lowed by contests onSaturday (in Mission),Monday (Langley),Tuesday back in Mis-sion and game sevenis scheduled for Thurs-day in Langley.

The winner of the series will take on thewinner of the Abbots-ford/Aldergrove playoff match up.

Good hearing, poor comprehension? The number of people who can hear well, but can’t understand what’s being said, is increasing. This is most evident in conversations and watching television. A newly-developed hearing chip is designed to restore speech comprehension without being noticeable in the ear.

A lot of people have poor comprehension, though they actually still hear well. It becomes noticeable in conversation, watching television and asking family to repeat what’s been said. A potential cause can be undetected loss in the high-frequency range. This means the sensory cells in the cochlea that hear high-range sounds are damaged as a result of circulatory disorders, diabetes, sudden hearing loss or workplace noise. Hearing loss in the high-frequency range makes speech sound muffled and unclear. The person with hearing loss mixes up, or can no longer hear, consonants like s, f, t, k, h and g. Speech comprehension is particularly impaired when there is background noise or when television programs have background music. The dilemma is that people with hearing loss in the high-frequency range do not

consider themselves to have a hearing problem. They can hear deep tones with no issue, and often put difficulty understanding speech down to unclear pronunciation. However, the time soon comes when problems with comprehension become annoying.

A new hearing chip has beendeveloped.

Swiss audiologists have developed a new hearing chip that restores speech comprehension, particularly with hearing loss in the high-frequency range. People can test the new Audéo V system by Phonak simply by calling now to do so. First, a hearing test

Ginette van Wijngaarden, at Connect Hearing, advises people with hearing loss on the new hearing chip, together with her colleagues.

and speech comprehension analysis is done. Where inner-ear damage is present, a software program analyzes the difference relative to normal hearing. These values are then input into the new Venture hearing chip in the Audéo V, which precisely takes into account and balances the frequency range of the person being tested. The test phase in particular is designed to clarify how speech comprehension can be improved in various situations and what role a new technology called “Autosense OS” plays. The chip recognizes where the person being spoken to is located and amplifies only his or her voice, while ambient noise is lowered and the optimum hearing programs are seamlessly adjusted. Thanks to several synchronous microphones, the hearing system can detect sound in all directions and select the direction that speech is coming from within milliseconds. According to Swiss researchers, this significantly augments speech comprehension, especially in conversation.

Interested people can register for a no-obligation demonstration of the Audéo V by calling 888.408.7377

The Mission Arts Council is gearing up for a Steampunk Spectacu-lorium, thanks to more than $53,000 in funding from the provincial gov-ernment.

The event, set for

Saturday, Feb. 21 at The Stage, is a biannual fundraiser for the arts council and is a cele-bration of all things ste-ampunk: from colourful costumes, inventions, roving entertainers to

live and silent auctions. It’s Victorian-era high

fashion meets sci-fi chic.

The provincial fund-ing is, in part, for a job creation partnership that is providing work

Steampunk celebration benefits from provincial fundingunteers, including cre-ating a volunteer data-base, and creating a vol-unteer handbook over the 40-week project.

These workers have helped put together an artists’ directory, a

marketing plan for the Fraser Valley Children’s Festival and a haunted house attraction last October for Halloween. They have also created a pop-up gallery featur-ing local artists.

“Arts and culture are so important for the vitality of Mission. This is a terrific proj-ect for the Mission ArtsCouncil,” said Abbots-ford-Mission MLA Simon Gibson.

“The funds gave usthe opportunity to havethe participants developa much-needed artist directory for our manylocal talented artists, volunteer handbooks, marketing binders for our special eventssuch as the Steampunk Spectaculorium, and learn how to presentspecial events. We hopethat the skills the par-ticipants gained whilebeing at the MAC will assist them in theircareers. We had a fab-ulous team and wewish them all well,” saidNancy Arcand, execu-tive director of the Mis-sion Arts Council.

Fraser Valley Stage is presenting Forbidden Broadway’s Greatest Hits starting Wednes-day, Feb. 25 at the Clarke Theatre (33700 Prentis Ave. in Mis-sion).

Forbidden Broadway puts a spin on musi-cals with only a piano, 28 cast members and a stash of wigs, cos-tumes and props.

The performers, who have been in rehears-als since Septem-ber, will be kept busy changing characters and costumes at light-ning speed.

Written and created by Gerard Alessan-drini, Forbidden Broad-way has been staged around the world since 1982 and has been revised to keep pace with the Broadway

shows that have come along during that time.

The show features music from shows such as Wicked, Phan-tom of the Opera, Les Miserables, Spamalot and Rent.

The show also spoofs the likes of Carol Channing, Liza Minelli, Harvey Fier-stein, Rita Moreno and Chita Rivera.

The performance runs Feb. 25 to 28 at 7:30 p.m., with a 2:30 p.m. matinee on Satur-day, Feb. 28.

Tickets are $25 for adults, $22 for seniors and youth, and $15 for children 15 and under.

Four Mission minor lacrosse players have been selected in the BC Junior A Lacrosse League draft.

Players selected include Nathan McK-eigan (11th overall by the Langley Thunder), Kalen Corona (23rd, Langley), Jesse Forster (30th, Langley) and Lucas Taylor (33rd, Port Coquitlam Saints).

“It’s always a thrill to see our players go on to the next level, but when you have four in one year, that’s remarkable,” said Mis-sion Minor Lacrosse Club (MMLC) vice-pres-ident Paul Horn.

McKeigan started playing for Mission at age seven and credits his success to coaches Craig Vetterl and Scott Wortley, and to Team

BC coach Tyson Leies.Like DJ Saari, the for-

mer Mission standout who was drafted by the NLL Stealth last sum-mer, McKeigan hopes to play professionally in either the National Lacrosse League or Major League Lacrosse.

Forster has played lacrosse in Mission for seven years.   He is a multi-sport ath-lete, involved in field lacrosse and soccer as well.

“For me, being involved in the draft was awesome and very exciting. It was a new and fun expe-rience for me waiting to see when I would get picked and which team I would be going to. I am very excited to play for Langley and I think that we will have

great potential to do big things,” he said.

Taylor, the only player to get drafted by someone other than Langley, is headed off to the Port Coquitlam Saints organization.

“It’s exciting to have the chance to play for such a great team and meet new people, as well as learn new things.”

Taylor has played all eight years of his

lacrosse career in Mis-sion and, like the oth-ers, made a point of thanking his family, coaches Vetterl and Wortley, as well as his teammates.

“A lot of older play-ers from Mission have helped and guided me in the right direc-tion over the years,” he said.  “Lacrosse is a great social sport with a fantastic family-like community!”

“These are terrific kids and it has been a real honour to be a part of their lives,” said Mission’s head coach, Scott Wortley.   “Each one of them deserves to proud and we should be proud of them.”

“For a community of this size, graduat-ing four players to the BCJALL is quite an accomplishment,” said Jeff MacAulay, MMLC president.

FAMILY VALUESPeople often talk about the importance of family values, sometimes even suggesting that the family is deteriorating. It is perhaps true that the “traditional” family, composed of one man and one woman joined in marriage and having children, is not necessarily the norm nowadays. In fact, statistics indicate a significant increase in the number of single-parent families, blended families, and other permutations of the traditional family in our society today. But is this necessarily a “deterioration” of the family, or is the family structure merely changing to reflect the demands of modern life? If we look to the Bible for enlightenment here, we are unlikely to find any unambiguous help. Firstly, the Bible itself illustrates an evolution in the concept of the family. In the Old Testament, we see many examples of polygamy, and kinship relations were certainly not what we think of them today. Who could marry each other and how people “got married” has changed considerably over the centuries. In the Bible, Jesus tells us that “whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother, and sister, and mother.” (Matthew 12:50). While it may be tempting to see this as signaling Jesus’s disdain for the nuclear family, perhaps the more sensible interpretation is that Jesus is trying to extend the concept of the family so that it includes all of our fellow human beings, and that God must come before family. So, the next time we are tempted to judge someone who comes from a nontraditional family, we should consider that they are indeed our brother and sister.

So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all men...

Main street is theme of Heritage WeekThis year’s Heritage

Week theme is Main Street: At the Heart of Your Community.

Every town and city has what they consider

to be a “main street” that encompasses the history and growth of a community. More and more communi-ties are revitalizing

their heritage buildings to encourage business opportunities, increase tourism and create added rental space for people wanting to live

Events taking place this weekend are:

• Meet Me on Main Street, a special exhibit featuring photographs dating from the early 1900s to the present that tell the fascinating his-tory of First Avenue — a street that traverses the heart of what is known as Mission’s downtown. At the opening on Feb. 21 at 1 p.m., visitors will be transported back in time through a series of historical vignettes

using a combination of live theatre and mul-timedia. Each vignettetells an intriguing storyabout First Avenue fromthe years 1918, 1929 and1956.

• Picture Yourself on Mission’s Main Street,a special interactive exhibit featuring photo-graphs of First Avenue. The event takes place Feb. 21 at 1:30 p.m. at the Mission Museum.

you live, other conditions like darker morning and afternoon commutes and heavy rain can make driving this time of year challenging. Drive safely this winter – slow down and increase your following distance.

OF THE WEEK!

Go to DrivewayCanada.ca for question of the week

DrivewayCanada.ca | Welcome to the driver’s seat

Braving the winter in search of summer wineThrough rain, fog, snow and ice, we drove in search of Syrah in the Okanagan Valley. The 1,000-kilometre journey was a good winter test of the all-wheel-drive 2015 Acura MDX elite edition. But it was also a quest to collect exam-ples of the fermented homegrown Syrah grape to be poured by Okana-gan winemakers at next week’s Vancouver Interna-tional Wine Festival.Drinking and driving don’t mix but for this Okanagan wine fan, the reward came at day’s end or when somebody else took the wheel at midday! The idea for the jaunt came when I learned Honda’s premium brand was a festival sponsor. My focus sharpened when Syrah was named the feature grape and it was revealed that 55 wineries from Australia would show off their version of the French grape – the big and often fruity Shiraz. Past tastings told me B.C. could hold its own in this duel. Indeed 16 of our best winemakers will uncork Syrah. The Driveway car pulled into eight of those vineyards but it was not an easy drive. Though the forecast snow did not materialize in the Fraser Valley, gusts did test surefootedness. The true winter test was found along the twisty Hope-Princ-eton highway. In the summer, it’s a fun roller coaster ride but hidden black ice and patches around every corner made it a steering wheel gripper.

The long straights in Manning Park tempt-ed me to open up the 3.5-litre SOHC, V6 and let all 290 horses roar. A sudden slip towards the ditch and a rear sway put paid to that notion and I was grateful for traction control. Rain swept us through the Similkameen Valley but cleared as we dropped down into Osoyoos. First stop would be Black Hills Estate Winery, on Black Sage Road, in Oliver. It has magnificent views of the Okanagan valley. Its

interpretation of Syrah is mouth-filling and much closer to its Rhone Valley origins than that Oz style. The same can be said of that served by TIME Estate Winery across the road, which opens to the public this summer.Minutes later, we had swept across the valley to the castle-like structure that is Road 13, where owners Mick and Pam Luckhurst entertained and sent us packing with a variety of blends. The overnight stop was neighbouring Tinhorn Cellars, where its generous co-owner and winemaker Sandra Oldfield extracted a delicious Syrah from her private cellar. The next day, a yellow orb appeared above while passing by the beautiful Vaseaux Lake and into Okanagan Falls. We spun onto Eastside Road and skirted Skaha Lake to Penticton. It’s a quiet, fast road and it enabled me to play with paddle shifters.

The view from Poplar Grove over Okana-gan Lake is spectacular as is the Syrah, which, like the best of the winery’s reds, benefits from the extra aging afforded by cellaring it for a couple of years longer than the norm. A three-kilometre side trip to Red Rooster netted a Reserve Syrah, which exuded yummy plum and cherry from its neck, once opened! One more stop before a relaxing evening spent staring over the lake while sipping on a suite balcony at the Summerland Waterfront Resort. The snowy and very icy single track to the new Sage Hills Vineyard in Summerland required careful navigation. The reward was a barrel tasting with winemaker Andrea Lee and vineyard manager Keenan Thrussell. The new vintage had yet to be bottled but a rosé version hit the spot later!Time to return to the coast via Sandhill Wines in Kelowna. Howard Soon, a B.C. born industry pioneer, makes Syrah from vineyards in the south of the valley and a special ‘small lots’ version from a

single vineyard.By the time the rear two rows were lowered to accommodate the purchased cases of wine, the seven-seat MDX was strictly a two-seater. Despite its load, it leapt up to the Pennask Summit on the Okanagan Connector as fast the outside temperature dropped to minus five. The Coquihalla Highway was bathed in sunlight and the descent to Hope was smooth and quiet but for the rattle from the bottles.Bring on the Aussies! If you can’t get to the festival tasting room, tour Okanagan wine country this summer… with a designated driver, of course.

24 The Mission Record Friday, February 20, 2015

Wynn passed away at age 67 after a courageous 14 month battle with pancreatic cancer. He passed away peacefully in his home on February 12, 2015 surrounded by his family. Born on March 18, 1947 in New Westminster, BC to Mildred and James Walker, Wynn was the eldest of 3 children. At the age of 6, Wynn began to cultivate his entrepreneurial spirit by

selling berries at the side of the road. During his teen years he attended Killarney secondary school and worked at Douglas plywood mill on Annacis Island. In 1969 Wynn operated a salvage mill on Burn Road in Burnaby, B.C and then in 1974 bought a small sawmill in Ruskin B.C. Over the past 40 years, the business has grown to include 3 mills known today as The Waldun Group which is known worldwide as one of the most successful cedar shake & shingle manufacturers. Wynn realized his dream to see the business grow and spent much of his life dedicated to the business. Wynn spent over 50 years enjoying the beach at Boundary Bay and Point Roberts where he as a boy, spent every summer - and would then grow up to watch his boys enjoy the beach and explore the clay cliffs. CAMERON, Doreen(nee Henderson)

On November 14th 2014 at Mission Memo-rial Hospital, one of the most inspirational, hard-working, funny, and stubborn women you could ever meet — the inimitable Doreen Cameron of Mission; Steelhead’s ‘Grandma Doreen’ to so many — finally stopped chop-ping wood, begrudgingly gave in to her worn-out heart, and softly left her earthly life quietly and peacefully, with her daughter Marna and her dearest friend and neighbour Bonnie at her side. Though she was still full of merriment, mischief and plans aplenty, she’d reluctant-ly admitted she was deeply tired and truly missed her beloved husband Pike after their 67 remarkable years together and the five long years apart since his passing in November of 2009. No doubt he was waiting for her in one of their adored ‘Volksie’ VW vans, ready to put-ter off on their next big adventure, side-by-side once again.Coming from a pioneer family and living through the Depression and WWII, Doreen was a tireless worker — from her early days packing shakes and helping run the family logging camp, through raising several gen-erations of both her own and cherished extra children and grandchildren, to her ‘retirement’ years filled with precious great- and great-great- grandchildren — and the always shiny waxed floors, lovingly tended rockeries, and endless chopped wood. To the end, in spite of the discomforts and limitations of the still amazing physique she laughingly called “some old lady’s body I find myself in”, she was astoundingly strong and independent, obstinately continuing to drive, and chop & carry wood, in spite of family and community trying to assist her. Doreen loved baking and was renowned for her pies, always making several different kinds at a time so each per-son could have their favourite. She and Pike were big gardeners and the old house teetered and groaned under the weight of hundreds of jars of canning, four huge overstuffed freezers, and enough stockpiled dry goods for a decade. For a time after Pike’s passing, Doreen hosted Friday night tipple’n’giggle get-togethers for an eclectic gang of neighbourhood gals, where she sipped her fave super-sweet sparkly drinks & let loose, often donning a festive flowery dress, a sparkling brooch, or her infamous glittery bejewelled gold apron. Her personality was as bright and twinkling as her wardrobe, and her eyes always gleamed with happiness and humour. What a character she was!Doreen was born on March 6th, 1925 in the County of Coderre, Saskatchewan, the fourth

child of Robert Henderson and May Cooper. The Hendersons moved to Mission, BC when Doreen was two. In 1943 Doreen married Alec “Pike” Cameron, son of Robert and Rita Cameron of Steelhead. Doreen and Pike had five children, but tragically three died young; infant son Kurt in 1960, daughter Suzan (Rob-erts) in 1984, and son Mark in 1997. Doreen was predeceased by her parents Bob & May Henderson, her in-laws Robert & Rita Cam-eron, son-in-law Sid Roberts, her brother Bill (“Rocky”) & his wife Mary, brothers Gordon (“Moose”), Jim, and Rayzy, her sister Marga-ret and brother-in-law Ken Shier, & brother-in-law Art Fraser.Doreen is survived by her sisters Joyce Elliott and Wanda Fraser, brother David (Elizabeth) Henderson, & sister-in-law Armande Hen-derson. Also survived by son Sam (Wendy Turpin), daughter Marna LeVae, daughter-in-law Terri, and God-daughter Debbie Murdoch. Grandchildren; Scott (Lynn) Cameron, Sherry (Ernie) Foisy, Neil Roberts, Clint Roberts, Paul Roberts, Ilana (Cary) Taylor, Curtis Cameron, Travis (Karla) Cameron, Matthew Cameron, Brodie May (Rebecca Brooks), Sienna LeVae (Shawn Pedersen). Great-Grandchildren; Kay-la Cameron (Brian Rogers), Ilaya Cameron, Andrew Foisy, Megan Foisy, Devin Roberts, Ella Cameron, Lucy Cameron, Blaze Camer-on, Helena May, Sofia May, Sicilia May, and Hayden May. Great-Great-Grandchildren; Tabitha and Victoria Rogers. Doreen was also a doting mother and grandmother figure to several generations of children in and around Steelhead, and she loved them all equally. Her ‘extra kids’ are many, but extra special to her were Pat “Doc” Murdoch, Melvyn Burden, Bob Isbell, Marie Donatelli, Rene Clark, and Gary Haseler. Both Pike and Doreen had wonderful senses of humour and used laughter and deep love to carry our family through significant tragedy and to celebrate our considerable blessings. Together as one entity, they modeled patience & resilience, showed humility and gracious-ness, taught responsibility and loyalty. They encouraged humour and optimism, and with-out fail shared their deep genuine love and pure joy. They were profoundly good people; we can honour their legacy by sharing small and simple kindnesses, laughing out loud, tending gardens, and messily sharing pie and whip cream with children. Our everlasting gratitude to the Steelhead community for keeping an eye on the feisty ol’ lady and helping her when she allowed. Many thanks also to Dr. Pomeroy for years of com-passionate care & to the caring staff at Mis-sion’s Royal Bank where Doreen banked for 50+ years, and also to the caring employees at Save-On-Foods, where she got herself five gallons of chocolate milk every 4 days!Doreen wanted to have a 90th Birthday party in March, and hoped the new Steelhead Hall would be completed so she could break it in. She didn’t quite make it, and the hall isn’t quite ready, but we’re going to get together nearby in Silverdale and celebrate the extraordinary woman she was. We’d love it if you would please join us!ON: SATURDAY, MARCH 7th 2~5pmAT: SILVERDALE HALL

BRUNNERMargaret Elizabeth

(Nee Thompson)Feb. 21, 1926 ~ Feb. 7, 2015

Today the world is a sadder place. Margaret peacefully left this earth with her children’s love and devotion embedded in her heart after living bravely with cancer. She was the mother we all wanted, the daughter we all strive to be, and the friend who never gave up or never let you down. Margaret was the sunshine on her beloved home, and on her summer retreat in Kelowna. She was the light in so many lives and for almost 89 years, she was full of goodness and love. The void of her physical presence will be replaced by the strength of her loving spirit that will surround us always. Margaret is pre-deceased by her husband Hans. Margaret is survived by her four chil-dren; daughters Elizabeth, Anne (Kelly), Greta and son John (Maxine) who will carry her in their hearts forever. In addition, her grandchildren Melissa, Lauren, Alanna, Curtis, Derek, Kristina, Evan and Arielle will miss her great-ly as will her extended family and friends. The family wishes to express its gratitude to all Margaret’s many wonderful, kind, thoughtful, trustworthy friends and family who sup-ported her throughout her illness. We will never forget Margaret’s cheery, positive approach to life, her extraordi-nary memory, and sharp mind. Margaret worked for Correc-tional Services of Canada, plus she continued to give back to her community by vol-unteering for the Community Policing Offi ce, the Canadian Cancer Society, the Citizen’s Advisory Committee for Cor-rectional Services of Canada, the Mission Historical Society and the BC Gymnastics Asso-ciation. Many deeply felt thanks to Dr. Nemanishen and Dr. Galbraith, as well as the nursing staff of Mission Memo-rial Hospital for the outstand-ing care they all provided. As per Margaret’s wishes, the funeral is private. If desired, as expressions of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. He was a dedicated husband to Rose and loving father of Michaela (d. 2000), Trisha and Brittany. Survived by 1 brother and 4 sisters, their spouses, in-laws, many nieces and nephews. Frank was born on April 3, 1955 in Hagersville Ontario, moved to BC at the age of 20. He owned and operated Sundance Homes and was known for his integrity and workmanship.
