MISSION CONTROL:ADVANCING OUR CAUSE

It is an exciting time to be a part of YMCA of Centre County, where strengthening communities is our cause.

From athletics to academic achievement, disease prevention to healthy bodies, and unlimited fun to unlimited possibilities, our Y is doing so much more. In 2017, we served 22,760 people in Centre County through programs that nurture the potential of youth, improve the health and well-being of children and adults, and provide help and hope to our neighbors.

Our members, volunteers, donors, staff, and partners are critical to our success. We all share the passion for strengthening our community.

LEADING YMCA OF CENTRE COUNTY INTO 2018...

YMCA of Centre County is a Centre County United Way partner agency. We, along with all of the partner agencies, work together to provide basic needs security, build resilience among youth, assure school readiness, create healthy communities, and protect the vulnerable among us. The United Way provided critical funding for the YMCA’s Open Doors and Partner memberships, as well as Preschool, Teen, and Backpack Weekend Food Programs. Together, we achieve so much more.

MISSION IMPACT STORIESThe support of our donors and community enables the Y to turn no one away due to an inability to pay. In 2017, the Y gave over $329,000 in Open Doors memberships, programs, and services back to the community. Additionally, over $115,000 in food was provided to 1,138 children through the Backpack Weekend Food Program.

From grandparents raising their grandchildren on a very limited income to working families with multiple children in multi-ple activities, and anyone else in need, the Open Doors Program makes it possible for kids, adults, and families to improve their health, self-esteem, strength of character, and so much more. I wish I could personally thank each person that helps make this program a reality by donating time, money, or both. It truly pays off for everyone in our community.- Open Doors Participant

My youngest daughter attends the Early Learning Program. My wife and I have been very pleased with how she is cared for, the development of her social skills, and the connections to literacy she has made thus far. We particularly are pleased with the balance of social and academic learning. She is excited to tell us not only what she learned, but also about the friend-ships that have been cultivated and the games she has played. The Early Learning Program is an asset to the community!- Parent of Participant

The YMCA Backpack Program has become an integral part of the lives of many of our students. Those who participate no longer have to worry about where their next meal will come from, but rather they get to relax and just be a kid. It also gives our students a choice, whether it is macaroni & cheese, soup, or a snack, children who typically go without eating or only have one option now get to experience the privilege of being in control of what and when they eat… Life would be more difficult for many of our students if we did not have this program. We are grateful! - Elementary School Principal

YMCA OF CENTRE COUNTY MISSION

2017 MISSION IMPACT HIGHLIGHTS

1 IN 4 Y MEMBERS PARTICIPATED THROUGH THE OPEN DOORS PROGRAM Funded by our Annual Campaign, special events, and United Way allocation, eligible members receive financial assistance with membership and program fees, ensuring that no one is turned away from the Y due to inability to pay.

241 PARTNER MEMBERSHIPS provided to other nonprofit organizations so they may bring their clients to the YMCA. By having access to YMCA facilities at no cost, services can be expanded and enhanced for the clients of partner member agencies.

1,137 STUDENTS IN BACKPACK WEEKEND FOOD PROGRAM received a backpack of shelf-stable food to take home every Friday. Many students depend on the school lunch (often the Free/Reduced Program) during the school day as their main source of nutrition, but on the weekend, they can be left unsure of when or what they will get to eat again. The Backpack Program is now offered in eight school districts and has been generously supported by donors from the school communities, Centre County United Way, and the Walmart Foundation.

NEW “SPORTS FOR ALL HEARTS” AND “CONNECTING THE PIECES” PROGRAMS provided a safe, nurturing, and fun atmosphere where children with autism can play at their comfort level while their parents can network and build a support system.

7,083 ADULTS TRAINED IN STEWARDS OF CHILDREN taught adults how to recognize, prevent, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse, enhancing the protection of children in our community.

966 GENEROUS DONORS AND 697 VOLUNTEERS supported the Y in strengthening your neighbors and community.

4,172 ACTIVE OLDER ADULTS experienced a strong sense of community and network of friends while sustaining health and well-being.

1,470 KIDS IN Y SWIM LESSONS learned safety and skills to encourage safety and confidence around water, as well as a lifelong means of exercise and recreation.

1,121 KIDS ENROLLED IN CHILD CARE PROGRAMS were in a safe, supervised environment and engaged in age-appropriate activities to encourage personal growth, confidence, and well-being.
