New Zealand forces received their newly created East Timor Medal (Figure 16). The silvered obverse features a profile of Queen Elizabeth II and the inscription, ELIZABETH II QUEEN OF NEW ZEALAND. The reverse design incorporates a representation of the head of a kiwi overshadowing a map of East Timor and, below that, the inscription, EAST TIMOR. At the top right is a sprig of olive leaves, which represents peace. Recipients of the East Timor Medal are also eligible for the New Zealand Operational Service Medal (Figure 17). The silver-plated obverse features the country’s coat-of- arms. The reverse features a kiwi, facing to the right over the inscription, NEW ZEALAND, and below three wavy lines the inscription, FOR OPERATIONAL SERVICE on two lines.
