Mission of the Month - Charity for Children

Charity for Children, Inc. (“CFC”), a local not-for-profit organization that provides fi-nancial assistance and services to children with serious illnesses in Central New York, is very happy to announce it has expanded its mission to include meeting non-finan-cial needs, as well. The launch of the “CFC Needs Network” forms a community of “go to” volunteers who will assist families by supplying in-kind services and donations, such as rides to medical appointments, room air purifiers, gently-used furniture and minor home repairs.

Knowing that a helping hand can some-times be more useful than a signed check, CFC envisions the Needs Network as an ever-expanding group of individuals who have agreed to receive a ‘Need-mail’ and will step forward when they can to donate their time, talent or connections to help a family. Charity for Children is a “Child” specific or-ganization and hopes that by creating the CFC Needs Network families in Central New York with a child facing medical issues can have more of their diverse needs met.

A family with a sick child often has basic needs which CFC can help meet from the financial contributions it has already col-

lected. But, there are other needs – repaint-ing a bedroom, replacing a carpet, repair-ing a leaking roof, providing an air purifier, or reviewing a lease and then talking to a landlord - which could be better met by non-cash donations of time, talent or items. Once such needs are identified, CFC be-lieves the Needs Network will be able to quickly find the individual who can help by giving their time or ‘surplus’ rather than a check.

Nina Albino, executive director and found of Charity for Children said, "We like to think the CFC Needs Network will become a char-itable ‘Craig’s List’ for Central New York or a ‘GiffordsList.org’ resource exchange for families – one person’s extra stuff, skill or access to resources can fill a needy fami-

The emergency phone number is: (315) 303-2308. Please leave a message and your contact information and the pastor on-call will return your call as soon as possible.

Communicating with Church LeadershipThe Advisory Committee meets on a regular basis and serves to advise the Senior Minister. All members of the Advisory Committee are members of the Board of Trustees. Input, ideas, suggestions, and comments are always welcome and may be submitted by e-mail to [email protected]. Those without access to email may place messages in the church’s internal mailboxes or mail to Advisory Committee, DeWitt Community Church, 3600 Erie Boulevard East, DeWitt, NY 13214.

First of all I want to thank all of you who sent your prayers, cards, flowers and condolences to our family as we grieved the loss of my sister. The congregation has been amazingly supportive during her 2 year battle with cancer. My sister often received cards and letters from our congregation, and it was very meaningful to her and to our whole family. Thank you seems like such inadequate words to use in this situation … but thank you.

Second, A team of creative and energized folks have been working on this year’s stewardship emphasis, which will culminate in a Celebration luncheon on Sunday, November 20th after the 11:00AM Service. We are part of a very dynamic family of faith, and every now and then, we just need to celebrate by breaking bread together. I really hope to see you there.

Third, I hope you will put these two dates in your calendar: On Saturday, December 3, in place of the 5:30 Service we will be

having a Christmas Carol Sing with special Christmas music and refreshments afterwards. On Sunday, December 4th at 7:00 pm at Immaculate Conception Church in Fayetteville, we will be gathering with other Christians in the community for the annual service of Lessons and Carols. Both of these experiences are an opportunity to begin the Advent Season in a way that prepares us to truly celebrate Christmas. I hope you will join us for both.

Fourth, for the last several years we as a church have fed the hungry at the Samaritan Center in downtown Syracuse. Nancy LeRoy has done such an excellent job of coordinating this, and at the end of this year she will be stepping down from this position. We are now looking for a team of 3 people who will coordinate this very important mission for our congregation. If you are interested in knowing more, please send me a note at [email protected] and I will get right back with you.

Rejoicing Always!

Dr. Mark E. SommersSenior Minister

Samaritan Center MissionFor the last several years we as a church have served the hungry at the Samaritan Center six times a year thanks to the leadership of Nancy LeRoy who will be steeping down from that responsibility at the end of this year. We are now looking for 3 people to form a team to make sure this ministry continues. If you are interested in learning more, please contact the church office or Pastor Mark. We are scheduled to serve the following dates:

2016Sunday, November 13Sunday, December 11 2017Sunday, February 19 (President’s Day Weekend)Friday, April 14 (Good Friday)Sunday, June 18 (Father’s Day)Sunday, August 6Sunday, October 8 (Columbus Day Weekend)Sunday December 3

We want to encourage groups serving together…staff, choir, youth, adult groups & also encourage families to serve together.

A NOTE TO THE CONGREGATIONHello Friends,

I hope that you all have enjoyed a wonderful autumn. What beautiful colors and weather. Now on to late fall, Thanksgiving, holidays and, well, you-know-what is coming!!

We are launching our Stewardship campaign and I would like to ask each and every one of you to strongly consider participat-ing to the best of your abilities. As I hope you all know, we reluctantly adopted a deficit budget for 2016-2017; meaning that we understood that we would not be able to cover expenses without increased income. This decision was made in order to maintain, and hopefully grow, our many ministries and wonderful staff. So many lives are positively impacted both inside and outside our walls by the love, efforts and generosity of our church. But there is more to do and we simply cannot move forward without increased giving by everyone.

We would be negligent to ignore our financial realities. And the Board of Trustees will not ignore them to be sure. In order to adopt this budget we’ve tasked ourselves with establishing a January review of our status of income vs. expenses to make further decisions on the wisdom of continuing without adjustments. This will occur and we have been working diligently on finding some solutions.

We immediately initiated two task forces to begin to address this issue. One is looking to increase the income generated by the use of our facilities. While they have made some very nice progress it is clear that this effort will only help supplement the necessary income- not “bridge our gap”. The second group has been focused on understanding historical and current giving patterns to try to determine what we might do differently in soliciting increased member giving. You will be seeing some of these ideas as we progress through our campaign and I encourage you to offer up any suggestions that you may have as well.

The bottom line is this: as a congregation we need to give more. I believe in leading by example and will tell you that my family is increasing our commitment. In addition, the Board of Trustees has been challenged to do the same to the degree that they are able. Our goal is to have 100% participation by the current members of our church. As I said at the start of this I am respect-fully asking each of us to prayerfully look at increasing your financial commitments for this coming year. We can achieve so much but it will take all of us participating to accomplish it. Your gift to God through our church is tantamount to our ability to continue our ministries. Thank you for your consideration and God Bless.

Rick Hall

COMPASSION MINISTRYFriendship Ministry Volunteers in this ministry keep regular contact with their assigned friend, a member of Dewitt Community Church who can no longer attend services as often as they would like. Friend assignments can be long term or short term depending on the situation. For information on how you can receive a friend or be a friend talk with Kay Paulsen 315-200-5650, [email protected].

Prayer Ministry At DeWitt Community Church, we have an intercessory prayer ministry because we believe that God answers prayers. Requests are shared with the congregation through e-mail to the Prayer Chain and publication in the weekly Prayer & Care. Prayers are kept confidential, when requested. The DeWitt Community Church prayer chain is committed to praying for you. Our team of intercessors support and care for the deeply personal needs of our church family and those they love. Let us know how we may pray for you by filling out a yellow Prayer Request Card and placing it in the offering plate or putting it in one of the communication boxes.

How To Serve On The Prayer Chain The prayer ministry continually enlists new people to join our intercessory prayer efforts. Members of the prayer chain receive prayer requests by e-mail and commit to confidentially pray for a request when it is received as well as during their daily prayer time until the request is removed from the prayer list. To become involved in this ministry, contact Kay Paulsen. 315-200-5650/[email protected].

Prayer Shawl MinistryDo you like to knit or crochet? Consider joining the Prayer Shawl Ministry. You can create shawls for those who are ill or experiencing loss or a square for military to wear in their helmet. For more information contact Nancy Bond, [email protected] for yarn and patterns.

Prayer Request CardsPrayer Request Cards are available at various locations in the church. If you have a prayer request you would like to share, please fill out the yellow card and drop it in a communication box or leave it in the office.

Prayer ChainThe Prayer Chain is group of members who commit to pray consistently for requests that come in the form of an e-mail. If you would like to receive prayer requests or no longer receive them, please alert Kay Paulsen, [email protected].

Help Us Help YouIf you live alone and your family is scattered or lives far away, consider giving Kay Paulsen contact information for someone in your family or a close friend we can contact if you are ever in an emergency situation and unable to speak for yourself. You may give her that information by contacting the church office, sending her a note at the church, or by e-mail at: [email protected].

ENTRUSTED WITH GIFTS

7

In January of 1997, a mystery was solved that had baffled people for nearly a decade. Someone was giving away millions of dollars! The recipients did not know why the gifts came or how to ask for more. Still, the money drizzled in, to universities, hospitals and service groups around the globe, paid in cashier’s checks and accompanied by word that the giver wished to remain anonymous. The giver, it turns out, was Charles Feeney, a 66 year-old businessman from New Jersey. Forbes magazine had listed Feeney, the owner of a duty-free shop conglomerate, as one of the 400 richest Americans. Later, it was discovered that Feeney’s wealth was only 1% of what Forbes thought it was. How could they be so far off in their projections?

For years, Feeney had quietly been giving it away. Over $6 billion in all. Feeney is known as a “shabby” dresser who flies coach, wears a $5 watch and does not even own a house or a car. Feeney estimates that he will go broke in 2016. Upon revealing this estimate, Feeney said, “I want the last check I write to bounce.”

The richest 1% of Americans give only 2% of their annual gross income to charity. Yet Charles Feeney managed to give away 99% of all he had without anyone knowing.

What would motivate someone to do such a thing?During the month of November, we have been thinking about our stewardship series. As we reflect upon our stewardship, we understand that stewardship is about how we share our time, talents, gifts, money, and resources with God and others. We are merely stewards of what we have because Psalm 24 states that everything on earth is God’s.

Many people find it difficult to give their money, time, talents, and gifts to God through the church. The challenge with stewardship is putting God first. Many put their goals first: career, sports, houses, cars, and success. However, we have been entrusted with much to give. Jesus addressed how God entrusts to our resources in Luke 16:

“Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much. So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches? And if you have not been trustworthy with someone else’s property, who will give you property of your own?

God has trusted you enough to give you a vast array of resources. What have you done with those resources?

We have received a much higher calling when it comes to our stewardship through Jesus Christ. But, can God entrust you with worldly resources so that you can be given true heavenly riches?

On November 20, I ask the congregation to join with me to fill out an estimated giving card to plan for the 2017 ministry year. Making a proportional giving commitment allows the congregation to plan for the budget. Instead of guessing what we think the congregation will give, making a giving commitment allows the leadership to make plans for new ministries and also whether to continue current ministries.

Why did Charles Finney give away more than $6 billion? He knew he was entrusted with great resources that it had to be shared. There was no way he could such amount of wealth in a world that needed help. Finney had a proper sense of stewardship.

I pray that you will join with me and make a faithful commitment to God through the church with your time, money, gifts, and talents. Let us continue to do great things together – as stewards – because God has deemed us trustworthy to share our stewardship.

Love and Grace,

Rev. Alan Rudnick
