TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The author of life you put to death, but God raised him from the dead (Acts 3:13-15, 17-19). Psalm —Lord, let your face shine on us (Psalm 4). Second Reading — We have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous one (1 John 2:1-5a). Gospel — Thus it is written that the Christ would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day (Luke 24:35-48).

It is not the suffering but the cause that makes the martyr. —English Proverb

FULFILLMENT It is interesting that during the Easter season, when we do not hear a reading from the Old Testament, it becomes so important. This is particularly true today. Peter’s speech begins with a prayer formula familiar to Jews: “The God of Abraham . . .” (Acts 3:13). It likewise contains the potent phrases “Holy and Righteous One” and “mouth of all the prophets” (3:14, 18). Peter was stating in no uncertain terms that the law, psalms, and prophets had been fulfilled in Christ. This is reinforced by Jesus himself in the Gospel passage, when he states that everything in the scriptures (to the early Christians “the scriptures” were what we call the Old Testament) had to be fulfilled. Above all, Jesus and Peter both emphasize that we are witnesses to all of this, and are sent forth to bear witness to it in the world. The Latin Missa, from which our word “Mass” comes, means “sent” (as in “mission”). As we leave Mass today, let us remember to be witnesses to all that has been fulfilled in the risen Christ. FEAST OF FAITH The Second Reading

The Liturgy of the Word generally follows a consistent pattern of three readings and a psalm. The second reading is always taken from one of the New Testament epistles or the book of Revelation, and generally is not intentionally aligned with either the Gospel or the first reading. Where would we be without these letters in which great saints and apostles like Paul, Peter, James, and John share their wisdom and pastoral good sense with the early Christian communities? It is in these letters, even more than in the Gospel narratives, that we learn what it means to be church: to live with each other, in the world yet not of the world, in these days after the Lord’s resurrection. Each New Testament letter was written by a particular leader for a particular community at a particular time. We are reminded of this at the beginning of the proclamation—“A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Ephesians,” or the Corinthians, or the Thessalonians. These texts were shaped by their particular historical and cultural context, but at the same time, through the liturgy, these letters are written to us, here, today. They speak to the realities of Christian living no matter where—or when—we live. They are truly “the word of the Lord” for us. -Corinna Laughlin, Copy-right © J. S. Paluch Co.

Adult Confirmation Sacramental Preparation Program

Mission San Diego is pleased to continue offering its Adult Confirmation Sacramental Preparation Program, a lively and welcoming process for adults who have been baptized in the Catholic Church wishing to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. Not to be confused with the Rite for Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA), this program is open to persons who are at least 18 years old, have already been baptized in the Catholic Church, have received their First Holy Communion, are active parishioners, and have a sense of commitment to their Faith. The process will be led by Fr. Raymond Philip and will emphasize the basics of Church teaching, and will address the many concerns, questions and responsibilities that will allow them to live and share their faith as fully initiated members of the Catholic Church.

During the pandemic, this process will consist of 6 weekly virtual sessions on Thursday nights from April 8-May 13.

To register, or for more information, please contact Fr. Raymond Philip Napuli at: [email protected] or Carol Gamara at: [email protected]

APRIL IS “CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH”

National Child Abuse Prevention Month is a time to acknowledge the importance of families and communities working together to prevent child abuse and neglect, and to promote the social and emotional well-being of children and families. The Office of Child Abuse Prevention encourages everyone to support children in their communities by prioritizing families. During the month of April and throughout the year, we encourage you to support organizations that provide services to families with the goal of preventing child abuse and neglect. Due to shelter-in-place, continued social distancing and the lengthened distance learning, children have less contact with trusted adults outside their homes who can report suspected abuse. Many parents are also feeling extreme pressure and stress due to lack of childcare options, social isolation, working from home, fearing for health and safety when working outside of the home, and maintaining proper home and personal hygiene to ensure their families stay healthy. Now more than ever, parents need extra support and services to get through these unprecedented times.

Prayer for Healing God of endless love, ever caring, ever strong, always present, always just; You gave your only Son to save us by his blood on the cross. Gentle Jesus, shepherd of peace, join to your own suffering the pain of all who have been hurt in body, mind, and spirit by those who betrayed the trust placed in them. Hear the cries of our brothers and sisters who have been gravely harmed, and the cries of those who love them. Grant that all harmed by abuse may find peace in justice. Holy Spirit, comforter of hearts, heal your peoples wounds and transform brokenness into wholeness. Grant us the courage and wisdom, humility and grace, to act with justice. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

An Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. Lord, I know that You have always been there. I embrace You and unite my-self wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

WEEKLY BULLETINS: As a reminder, our bulletin is available on the Mission website starting on Friday morning and is emailed via Flocknotes on Friday afternoons.
