2015 HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES
Congratulations to Johanna Whitsel and Mitch Harshman, who will graduate from high school in June. We
will honor our graduates at worship on Sunday, June 14. May God bless these young people as they take their
next step in their journey through life.
2015 COLLEGE GRADUATES
Congratulations to Lindsay Bailey and Bryan Ciccarello as they graduated from college in May. Please read
on as the excitement for Lindsay continues….
To my Bethel family,
On Monday April 20, I met with the Northeast Ohio Candidacy Committee for my Entrance Interview.
The Entrance Interview is the first of three interviews that examine an individual’s readiness for ministry at
different points in his/her theological education. The committee had the choice to give me a positive entrance, a
postponement or a denial of entrance. The purpose of the Entrance Interview was to explore my potential for
rostered ministry, as well as my readiness to begin studying at the seminary.
The candidacy panel consisted of five pastors/lay leaders. Due to Pastor Krebill being on sabbatical, he
was not called to be on the panel, though his presence was certainly felt by all. For two hours I was asked to
share my call story, as well as any gifts or experiences that would give insight into my readiness and potential to
be a pastor in the ELCA.
The interview went very well, though I must say that the 25 minutes of waiting in another room while
they came to a decision was the longest 25 minutes of my life. When I was brought back into the room, the
committee shared with me that I had received a positive entrance, and that “they have great hope and promise in
me and my leadership potential.” This means that I am officially attending Trinity Lutheran Seminary in
Columbus this fall, and am on the track to getting my Master of Divinity degree.
Thank you all for your continued prayers and support. Without Bethel, I am confident that I would not
be where I am today.
I will leave you with a portion of the prayer that I spoke aloud at the beginning of the interview: “Lord,
we ask that you be fully present with us, and that you might make your presence known by sending your Spirit
to be with us. Help us to discern the ways in which you continuously call each of us. Lead us, guide us and be
near us, so that we may delight in you and follow your will.”
Your sister in Christ,
Lindsay Bailey

LOST AND FOUND Farewell Tour
Coming to Bethel – Saturday, August 29
You’ve got your invitation, so don’t say that you don’t dance. Just join the celebration, and don’t you miss this
chance!
– LOST AND FOUND
Please join us as Bethel proudly hosts LOST AND FOUND on its 2015 Farewell Tour! The concert is
Saturday, August 29 at 7 PM in Bethel’s sanctuary. The concert will be followed by a dessert reception in the
Gathering Place. This concert is FREE, open to the community, and all are welcome!
Who is LOST AND FOUND? Ask any member of Bethel’s Senior High Youth and they should be able to
answer this question – especially after our National Youth Gathering! LOST AND FOUND has been playing
concerts for decades. Here’s a brief synopsis of the band, taken from the band’s website:
LOST AND FOUND is Michael Bridges and George Baum. George plays piano, and Michael plays guitar.
Stylistically, their music is not easy to describe. Some have simply labeled it "speedwood" or "acoustic thrash."
Others, upon hearing the unique blend of folk and vocals, played without drums or stacks of keyboards, and
including the occasional ballad, have just said, "I've never heard anything like that before."
LOST AND FOUND concerts involve the audiences. Their concerts include stories of their lives and their
travels along with their songs. All are welcome and all are included. It has always been their mission to be
honest and natural in concerts, to model a way of being an independent band, and to meet lots of people--
communicating with them about faith and life.
The evening will include humor, story-telling, and an interweaving of the Gospel. It is an honor to be part of the
Farewell Tour and an important piece of our sabbatical journey, as Pastor will be joining LOST AND FOUND
at the Luther500 in Germany this fall. Also, this concert is our opportunity to reach out to other congregations
in the area as part of our JOURNEY TOGETHER to welcome them to a very special evening at Bethel.
Again, this concert is FREE! But we do need your RSVP. We will be sharing more information SOON about
RSVP options.
We also need your help in SPREADING THE WORD. This concert will help us reach other congregations in
the area. We will be sending postcard invitations and other materials to local congregations but we need your
help with welcoming others. Invite your friends and family! We promise even if a “rock” concert is not “your
thing,” you will enjoy this show and take away a valuable message. It’s your last chance to see them! Don’t
miss out. #steinauf
Sincerely,
Bethel’s Sabbatical Committee
P.S. Be sure to bring your slinkies!

L.I.F.E. TOGETHER
As another school year ends and summer is upon us, the sounds of our L.I.F.E. Together children echo from our
Bethel classrooms. A special thank you to all who helped "plant the seeds of faith" in the lives of all who
participated in our Sunday morning education classes. We are very blessed to have individuals who dedicate
every Sunday morning to our Education Ministry. The preparation and care that they give to their classes is
very much appreciated. Thank you to the parents/grandparents for bringing your children to hear and learn
about Jesus. L.I.F.E. Together classes will start back on Sunday, September 13, 2015. Have a wonderful
summer and we look forward to seeing you and your children at VBS.

Interpenetrating
On May 18th
, we heard Carol Krajewski read the lessons of the day. In the Celebrate’s introduction to the
lessons, she read the words “interpenetrating life.” I thought for sure that that must be a typographical error, but
then I couldn’t think of another word close to interpenetrating that made sense. But who uses the word
interpenetrating anyways and what could it mean? I had to look it up.
Interpenetrating has as its root the word interpenetrate that means to penetrate (something) thoroughly, to
pervade, or to become mixed or united by penetration. Historically in Christian theology the word refers to the
mutual inter-penetration and indwelling within the threefold nature of the Trinity, God the Father, the Son and
the Holy Spirit (according to Wikipedia). The early church fathers used a Greek work “perichoresis” to “flesh
out” the nature of God prior to the formulation of the Nicene Creed that we sometimes use in our Lutheran
liturgy. Now “perichoresis” is one you will have to look up for yourself. The word, though ancient, is
undergoing a renewed understanding within the Christian community. I think you will find the effort of reading
about it interesting and rewarding as part of your spiritual journey.

ORGAN RESTORATION UPDATE
As a follow-up to the organ restoration information I included in my annual report, I’d like to share an update and our next steps. After seeking the guidance of two organ builders, and after careful consideration by the organ committee, we will be moving forward with the first phase of organ restoration. Work will begin in June. This phase focuses on the swell division of the instrument.
Support for this project is given in loving memory of Noreen Harbart, a beloved member of the Bethel Choir, who sang with us for more than 50 years. We are very grateful to Noreen’s husband, Ed Harbart, who is a champion of the Bethel Music Ministry and a dedicated choir member. Other funds come from the estate of Bob and Doris Petras. These gifts help to ensure the enduring legacy of Bethel’s Music Ministry.
And now, here is more detailed information from James Leek, President and Organ Builder of the Leek Pipe Organ Company. Leek has maintained our instrument for many years.
Some background and recent history about the builder of the M.P. Moeller Pipe Organ at Bethel Lutheran Church:
“In 1937, when Mathias P. Möller left to his son the presidency of the famous company he had founded, some seven thousand organs had been built in the Möller factory. M.P. Möller, Jr. (1902-1961), followed his father’s footsteps as a successful industrialist, banker and lay church leader. He was
9
president of the Hagerstown Trust Company, a director of the Potomac Edison Company and of the Remington Book Company, and member of the Board of the Foreign Missions of the United Lutheran Church of America and of the Board of the National Council of Churches.
During World War II he steered his company through the conversion to the manufacture of aircraft materials. Wings for Fairchild planes, gun turret training devices for the navy, doors and elevators for Flying Boxcars all paraded of the assembly lines of the Möller factory. After the war he charted a reconversion course that kept the Möller name prominent among leading builders in America. By the late 1960’s the firm had completed well over 10,000 contracts.”
(Source: Organs in the Twentieth Century)
Below is a description of the general scope of pipe organ project contracted by church to start in June 2015. While this project addresses some urgent concerns, there continues to be a need for more comprehensive restoration and upgrades, especially given its age.
There are a total of 13 shutter doors in this instrument, all of which are operated by four machines. There are a total of 26 large pneumatic bellows or wind reservoirs that open or close each of the doors to give the organist a dynamic range with music performance. There is also one bellows that supply wind pressure to these swell expression machines.
Work involved: Removal of all pipes in Swell Division. Pipes will be removed and placed in pipe trays. This will give technicians the access to the expression machines. These machines will be removed, completely refurbished at the shop, re-installed and tested. The Swell chamber will be vacuumed and wind chests wiped down. All pipes for Swell Division will be cleaned, re-installed and tuned. In addition to rebuilding the Swell expression door machines, we will also remove all pipes in the Great Division, clean and reinstall and tune them.
Leek Pipe Organ Company commends the stewardship of church leaders and members with regards to the pipe organ, a key church asset. We hope that church members and leaders will continue to plan for investing in further upgrading the instrument and restore other remaining key components over time in the future. We are grateful for the confidence placed in our family business and the opportunity to be of service.
During renovation, one or both of the keyboards will not be available on any given Sunday. The summer setting of the liturgy, Marty Haugen’s The Creation, is set for keyboard. Hymns and other incidental music will be played on either the keyboard or piano. In other words, service music is flexible and will not be interrupted.
Thank you to those who are serving on the organ committee: Jayne Cool, Kristin Egan, Ed Harbart, Yvonne Hoelter, Pastor Krebill, and Michael Salem.
Please see me or a committee member if you have questions.
In Him,
Erika Haskell
