Climb the Mountain

In scripture, mountains serve as places where we encounter God Himself. Moses ascended Mt Sinai to receive the ten commandments (Exodus 19:3), Christ ascended the mountain to preach the Sermon on the Mount to His disciples (Matthew 5:1), and at His Transfiguration, which we celebrate this month on August 6, Christ and his disciples ascended Mt. Tabor together. It was at the Transfiguration that Peter, James, and John encountered God in His full glory.

On Mt. Tabor, surrounded by a cloud of light and with a voice booming from the heavens saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!” (Mat 17:5) This is another theophany in which we see the Father (the voice), the Son (Christ shining in light), and the Holy Spirit (the cloud which overshadowed them). This was so powerful the disciples who witnessed it were overcome and did not want to leave.

These days we see people falling away from the Church in record numbers. Why are we so disconnected from the Church? It’s easy to cast blame in many directions – the Church is boring, unwelcoming, or irrelevant, the world has many distractions – but this overshadows a deeper problem present in each one of us.

God has made us “alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus[…].” (Heb 2:6-7) It is true we have been saved together and the ONLY thread that truly binds us together is Jesus Christ. But each one of us must search our hearts and ask ourselves “Do I really believe?” And if we find that we do believe, then what is the proof in our lives? We have been saved by grace through our faith, but that does not mean we are pas-sive recipients of this grace. Our faith is perfected through our actions, not for our own glory, but for the glory of God.

Christ did not come into the world to create a religion, He came so that each of us could experience Him face to face and heart to heart and be transformed into the creatures He

Philoptochos News

A Message from President Nina Even though Philoptochos does not have regular meetings in the summer months, the ladies of our Chapter are busy with all of the duties of all of our committees in addition to the baking for the festival. I would like to invite everyone in our parish to join us for the festival baking (YES - men are welcome, too!). It is a wonderful opportunity to learn how to bake the many wonderful pastries that sell out every year at the festival, in addition to the Greek dishes our community is famous for. We hope you will come. Maria Barbas and I traveled to Boston for the 44th Biennial Clergy Laity and National Philoptochos Biennial Convention over the 4th of July weekend. It was an amazing time of meeting Philoptochos Sisters from across our country and to learn about the work they are doing in their communities. We will report at our October meeting and hope that you will join us to hear about this important work. Camp Agape Northwest July 22 – 28, 2018 As we go to press, Camp Agape is in full swing and a report of all of the activities will be in the October Philoptochos News. Mark Your Calendar for the Last Sinatra Chocolate Wine Ball All good things must come to an end. The 10th and Final Sinatra Chocolate Wine Ball will be Sunday, November 11th. Please plan to join Camp Agape Northwest for an elegant evening at Herban Feast. Our festive celebration will feature a seasonal dinner menu, Washington wines and chocolatiers, and the music of Frank Sinatra. Proceeds from the event will benefit Camp Agape, a camp for children with cancer and their families. For more information, call Susan at 425-772-1605 or email [email protected]. Bookstore News

Volunteer at the Bookstore during the Festival

With the festival right around the corner, volunteers are needed to set up the bookstore which

will be located in the Fr. Homer Library. This entails moving the library inventory to the

bookstore and the bookstore inventory to the library. Set up begins Friday, August 31 and

continues on Saturday, September 1. If you would like to help with the set up or work in the

bookstore during the festival, please email [email protected] or contact Lindsay

Stotz, Heather Stotz or Theodora Argue.

We are in the midst of ordering for the festival: interesting icons, a wide variety

of adult and children's books, gift items, silver crosses and prayer bracelets. If

you have a request for a special order item, please let us know.

The bookstore also has some new titles now in stock. Ascetics in the

World, originally only available in Greek, has now been translated into

English. It is a collection of stories about 45 holy individuals from a variety of

backgrounds: married and unmarried, lay people and clergy. Although they all

have their own stories and struggles, they all have a strong faith and love for

Christ.

Interested in learning more about the Jesus prayer? A Night in the Desert of

the Holy Mountain: Discussion with a Hermit, is written by the esteemed

theologian Metropolitan Hierotheos of Nafplion, Greece. He shares his

conversation with an elder from Mt. Athos regarding the Jesus prayer (also

known as the prayer of the heart). This modern day classic has been enjoyed

by many and translated into multiple languages. It is a great read for those

who appreciated The Way of the Pilgrim. Metropolitan Hierotheos has been to

the Puget Sound area three times to give spiritual lectures.

July BBQ at Jubilee Women’s Center!

Thank you to Julie Legeros and Emilie John for hosting a Summer BBQ at JWC in July. Grilled hamburgers, corn on the cobb and more, made for a delicious and much enjoyed outdoor Summer dinner. This really was a special treat for the residents!

St. Demetrios provides dinner once a month to the 33 low income residents at JWC. The meals we provide offer fellowship and help stretch their grocery budgets.

We are currently looking for someone to host or help with a meal in August or September. If you would be interested, please contact Georgene Karambelas at 206 817 2523 or [email protected]. More information at www.jwcenter.org

Jubilee Women’s Center News

The purpose of this message is to communicate a challenge for our Church. The Church office has been bombarded with reports of the state of Large Hall as Coffee Hour ends.

The compost, recycle and garbage bins are overflow-ing and materials are thrown into incorrect bins. We are working to get the adequate number of bins for our needs. More than that, the Large Hall is left a mess in general.

The challenge to each of us is to leave the Large Hall in the same condition as one would want their house to be after hosting coffee with friends or family.

Did you notice the reports in the news this week about the World Cup Soccer Match where Japan beat Columbia? The entire world watched in won-der when the Japanese fans clapped for their players, then turned around and cleaned the entire stadium of trash and debris before they went to their cars!

intended us to be. But we must ascend the mountain in the same way the disciples did. This means recommit-ting ourselves to our faith each day – first by giving thanks for the gift we have been given and then by seek-ing out how God wants us to use that grace in our lives for His glory.

We’ve built up many programs and ministries in our parishes over the past few decades and we may even find that we are fully participating in the life of the Church. But what fruit has our participation truly borne? Have we found that our hearts are transfigured and, like Peter, James, and John, we would do anything to be with Christ or do we have something less? This is a question we need to be asking ourselves, both individually and together as the body of Christ, on a regular basis to ensure that we aren’t just going through the motions.

This is the true reason people are falling away, because we haven’t seen that transformation in our hearts, and so we aren’t as connected as we think. While it might appear that we are in crisis, I do not see this as some-thing to fear, but an opportunity. Christ is calling us up the mountain of our own hearts to be illumined by His light. Will we make the climb?

Orthodox Missions News

Support a Mission Priest (SAMP)

The Support a Mission Priest (SAMP) program offers monthly financial assistance to indigenous priests in extremely poor areas around the world. Through SAMP donations, the priest is able to apply himself more fully to the needs of the parish, and hierarchs are able to ordain more clergy to meet the growing needs of their flock.

Who are SAMP Priests?

SAMP priests follow in the footsteps of the apostles, spreading the message of Christ’s love to areas of the world where people hunger for the peace and truth of the Orthodox Faith. Many priests are responsible for several communities, as the Church is growing faster than clergy can be trained.

Why SAMP?

SAMP makes it possible to help our brothers around the world who are spreading the Gospel. SAMP dona-tions provide the basic needs of the recipients and their families as they nurture the growing number of Or-thodox communities in these poorer regions.

How does SAMP Work?

Donations of $600.00 annually to support a priest will be forwarded to one of the 18 countries OCMC is serving through the SAMP Program. Donors will receive a picture and biography of the priest which includes information about his calling to the Orthodox faith and the history of Orthodoxy in his country.

For more information on the SAMP program and the work of the OCMC, visit www.ocmc.org or call 877-GO-FORTH (877-463-6784)

Read this! Japanese fans certainly had reason to go wild on Tuesday night. Their side won their opening game, beating Colombia 2-1, and securing the team's first victory against a South American side. But after the team swept Colombia off the pitch, Japanese fans also did their share of sweeping: meticulously cleaning up their rows and seats in the stadium. Equipped with large rubbish bags they brought along, the fans marched through the rows picking up rubbish, to leave the place just as neat as they had found it.

"It's not just part of the football culture but part of Japanese culture," Japan-based football journalist Scott McIntyre told the BBC. He is in Russia following the team and was not at all surprised by the somewhat dif-ferent nature of Samurai Blue fans.

"You often hear people say that football is a reflection of culture. An important aspect of Japanese society is making sure that everything is absolutely clean and that's the case in all sporting events and certainly also in football."

Thank you to all of our faithful stewards who have returned their 2018 stewardship pledge cards and contributed to St. Demetrios parish. Your continued support is very much appreciated. For our stewards who have not returned their 2018 stewardship pledge cards yet, please do so as soon as possible and before the busy summer travel and vaca-tions.

You can visit our parish website: http://www.saintdemetrios.com/stewardship/stewardship-pledge) and sign-up online. You may also download a stewardship card, sign it, and return it to the church office.

Parishioner Thoughts on Stewardship, the Care of our Church

The Stewardship Committee asked a handful of parishioners to express their personal thoughts on the stewardship of our church. Anonymous responses from 8 parishioners are provided below.

Parishioner 1: “I have always believed that we really don’t possess anything. We are simply stewards of the many blessings the Lord has bestowed upon us. Giving is a reciprocal arrangement as the Lord loves a cheerful giver and rewards him or her handsomely for generosity to the church and others in need. True selfless giving warms the heart and cheers the soul. The dividends of selfless giving exceed the value of the gift in every way. It seems in my life, the more I give, the more blessed I feel as a result.”

Parishioner 2: “Serving my church is the MOST important part of my healthcare.”

Parishioner 3: “I have been attending St. Demetrios my whole life. I raised my children alone, so the church was a comfort for me. As my children grew up I would help at church as much as I could as the church allowed my children to prosper as students of dance, Greek School, etc. As my life has changed, I am able to give to the church and help with my talents so that we can have a great parish.”

Parishioner 4: “My message is that the more you give, the more you get back. We recently made a $500 donation one Sunday morning. That same afternoon, by divine intervention, we received a ‘free’ supply of house paint equal to $500. Glory to God for all things!"

Parishioner 5: “Every time we have increased our stewardship we have been guided toward promotions or blessed with good fortune. Truly if we trust in God he will provide.”

Parishioner 6: “About 5 years ago, I glanced through a stewardship brochure during coffee hour and saw a graphic that asked, ‘Is your church worth more to you than your latte-a-day?’ My mental response was ‘Of course!’ Then I did the math. My years’ worth of coffee purchases was much more than my annual contribution to the church. With this new perspective on putting my resources toward what is important to me (where my heart is), I immediately doubled my stewardship and have lovingly increased my annual contribution nearly every year.”

Parishioner 7: “Through the tragedies and hardships in my life, my relationship with God became strong-er and stronger. I learned to love and trust Him more and more each time because He always pulled me through. I honor and show gratitude for His guidance by being present with the church and giving to the church. These are the least I can do for all that He has given me.”

Parishioner 8: “Once we had our first (and then second) child the idea of increasing our pledge to our church really felt right. Although it may be considered a time for couples to tighten their budgets it just felt that we should be giving more so that our children and our children's children would have the same religious/spiritual house to go to and opportunities for activities (Sunday School, acolytes, camp) and of course spiritual guidance. In a sense our families stewardship is an investment in all of our children's fu-ture. I recently heard Father Photios use the expression ‘Don't give until it hurts, give until it feels good’ and I really liked the feel of that.”

The Stewardship Committee would like to thank our parishioners for sharing what stewardship means to them!
