Introduction A warm welcome to all of our friends and supporters; we are so blessed to be able to take this opportunity to provide you with an update as to the role that Mission to Haiti Canada has continued to serve both locally and in Haiti over the past number of months. As you read through this newsletter you will discover how we have been reacting to the needs of the Haitians since the devastating earthquake on January 12, and how the organization envisions continuing to move forward in this regard. April Mission Trip On April 10, 2010 a group of 29 volunteers began the trek to Haiti full of both excitement and apprehension as we were to arrive to a situation in Haiti that has been marked by tremendous loss and suffering. The images that most of us had seen on television and newspapers over the past months were far from what many of us were used to expecting in Haiti. Both during the flight into the airport and the drive to the camp in Messailler, the sight of so many tents and tarps and crumbled buildings was a stark reminder of how much more difficult the day to day lives of the Haitians had become and even more so of how much more important it is that we continue to share our gifts, talents, and resources with this country. It is so evident that now more than ever, the country of Haiti needs to experience a consistent outpouring of Christ-like servitude. It is with this giving spirit that our group devoted itself to serving in Haiti. We arrived with construction, sponsorship and medical teams and hit the ground running on this one week trip. We were able to begin our trip by attending a church service at the campus followed by an afternoon food distribution program in Favo which was an incredible experience for many of the team members. IntroductionA warm welcome to all of our friends and supporters; we are so blessed to be able to take this opportunity to provide you with an update as to the role that Mission to Haiti Canada has continued to serve both locally and in Haiti over the past number of months. As you read through this newsletter you will discover how we have been reacting to the needs of the Haitians since the devastating earthquake on January 12, and how the organization envisions continuing to move forward in this regard.

April Mission TripOn April 10, 2010 a group of 29 volunteers began the trek to Haiti full of both excitement and apprehension as we were to arrive to a situation in Haiti that has been marked by tremendous loss and suffering. We were able to begin our trip by attending a church service at the campus followed by an afternoon food distribution program in Favo which was an incredible experience for many of the team members. of the events of the trip; photos are also available at this site: www.mthcanada.org Given that the rainy season had already started, we were unsure that the construction crew would be able to achieve much progress on the projects that involved working outdoors. Two major projects were planned and due to the mostly co-operative weather (thank God), we were able to complete them. This included accomplishing all the work associated with digging, rebar reinforcing and concrete pouring to establish two very large footings for the new bridge that is

being built to replace the previous bridge which had been destroyed over the last year. This project is pivotal to allow future groups the opportunity to move the bridge closer to the point of completion so that vehicle travel can be re-established into the camp to facilitate personal transport and the movement of critical supplies. Another significant project that occurred was the construction of a prototype house that will be built by a Haitian construction crews for local families displaced by damage to their homes. This new design is both hurricane and earthquake resistant and will provide much needed shelter for families as well as providing work for the construction crew (see Winter 2010 newsletter for a schematic of the house design). MTH Canada is providing funds for the construction of some of these homes; in addition we are seeking financial assistance

from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) to extend our ability to provide much needed shelter. The construction crew certainly earned their stripes from the amount of sweat equity they invested working side by side with their Haitian brothers in Christ. It was amazing to see this level of dedication and we are truly thankful for their contribution.

The medical team this year was particularly busy dealing with different types of injuries. A number of broken bones were set and placed in casts and many crutches and walkers were distributed to people that had suffered significant injuries in the earthquake. They cared for some patients that had serious burns

and others that had suffered significant physical and mental trauma as a result of the quake. One woman presented with 3 broken ribs as a result of falling concrete blocks as her house collapsed; her husband had recently sustained a stroke and they were currently living under a bed sheet with their children. She was provided with medical attention, some food, money and a waterproof tent to help provide them with some relief from their current dilemma. The team held two days of clinic at Messailler, two days at Christa College and one day at Favo; over 800 people were attended to by our excellent medical volunteers. The children who presently live in the orphanage on the campus were all given a baseline medical and dental exam which will facilitate providing them with superior care in the future. The team wrapped up late on the last evening by organizing the pharmacy for the next medical team that would be arriving in the coming weeks. We are grateful for the talents and empathy the medical team extended to the Haitian people; many were truly blessed by the attention they received from this awesome team.

The child sponsorship team had the task of locating all of the school children that you currently are supporting. School has not been in session since the quake and throughout the

country children have not been permitted to attend any school building that has a concrete roof (which is the case for the majority of schools) so the only way that a few children are attending school is if it’s under a tent or tarp structure. We have not been able to get accurate information as to when this may change or what the government is planning on doing to correct this situation. In the mean time, we have been in contact with some tent companies to try to provide a structure that would allow the children to return to school and some sense of normalcy in their routine. MTH Canada is so thankful that Drumbo Tent Company Ltd has donated three large tents (2-30’X70’ tents and 1-30’X40’) that we will be shipping to Haiti in the near future. This will allow us to get the 3 largest schools that are sponsored by MTH Canada up and running again! A company called Jaylor will be helping us with the shipping costs and logistics as well. Please consider using the services of companies like this that are actively supporting our organization.

In the course of locating the sponsor children, taking updated photos and distributing your gift boxes,

much to our surprise it became clear that only one of our sponsor children had perished in the quake. Members of the sponsorship tram met with the family of this girl and our condolences were extended to her family. We are transferring her sponsorship to her sister so that she may be able to attend school. Receiving an education is important to these children as it fosters a sense of hope for them and creates an environment of normalcy for them. Please continue to provide support for this crucial program and pray that these children will one day help to lead their country out of the despair and abuse that has plagued them for centuries; photos were taken and information was gathered for other children who are in need of sponsorship. If you

know of someone that might be interested in sponsoring a child, please consider directing them to our sponsorship program. As the sponsorship team was working on these initiatives, they were reminded

again how much the efforts of some of the local Haitians have facilitated their ability to achieve success with staying connected with these children and their families during this tumultuous times. We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Bisson Jean-Baptiste and his company of loyal friends for having stepped up as leaders in serving their country and providing MTH Canada with indispensible assistance and information.

Overall the trip went amazingly well as much was accomplished and the lives of many Haitians and team members were forever touched. A reporter from the Woodstock Sentinel-Review, Elliot Ferguson, joined our group on this trip. He captured many images and experienced Haiti firsthand allowing him to create an insightful report on what is currently occurring there. You can view his take on Haiti at this internet link: http://www.woodstocksentinelreview.com/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=2551003It is our aspiration to continue to keep Haiti in the media and to not let this crisis fade from the minds of the people we live with. The staff and leadership at the radio station The Beat 91.5 also have continued to raise awareness and promote what MTH Canada is doing. They have been so helpful in allowing one of their on air personnel, Adele Newton from the morning show, to accompany our assessment team that went to Haiti in March. By seeing and experiencing what is going on in Haiti, Adele has been inspired to share the story with their listeners and has used the radio to improve our ability to provide help to the Haitians. Another group called STIMMA (Short Term International Medical Missions Abroad) has also been of great help in facilitating aid to Haiti. One of their members Veneta Anand has been so helpful with providing medication and other forms of help for the Haitians. We are truly indebted to her for all the help she has been providing our group. As we endeavor to further help the people of Haiti and groups and individuals come alongside our organization it becomes possible for the positive outcomes to become exponentially expanded. We thank everyone who has stepped forward over the past months and years to facilitate this mission.
