Number Patterns
MathematicsGrade Level Expectations: Third Grade
► Patterns, Relations, And Functions - In problem-solving investigations, students demonstrate an understanding of patterns, relations, and functions that represent and explain real-world situations.
47. Find patterns to complete tables, state the rule
governing the shift between successive terms, and continue the pattern (including growing patterns)

Big Idea
Patterns are used in everyday life. An understanding of patterns enables
problem-solving success in a number of situations involving predictions. For
example, weather predictions are based on patterns.
Guiding Questions:
• What is the rule governing shifts between successive terms?
• How would you continue number patterns?
• Can you use number patterns to complete a T-Chart?

Number Patterns
How do I recognizethe pattern?
• First, look at the numbers next to each other.
• Next, ask, “What am I doing to the 1st number to get the next number? This is the RULE of the pattern.
• Finally, continue the pattern using the rule.

Solve:
We planted a seed & took care of it every day. At the end of week 1, the plant was 2 inches tall. At the end of week 2, it was 4 inches. At the end of week 3, it was 6 inches tall. If this trend continues, how tall will it probably be at the end of week 7?
Directions:
Solve the word problem using what you learned about Number Patterns. Make a T-Chart on the back of your
Checklist. Complete the chart to solve the problem.
Do this first, and then check your work with the answer on the next slide.
