As we get started with this season of combined worship, where we can come together and celebrate who we are as a community and prepare to grow in love and service, I have felt a renewed appreciation for the value of blended worship. “Blended” worship refers to the mixing of the ancient and the modern in worship styles, typically in reference to music. This is as opposed to setting up “traditional” and “contemporary” worship services, and never the two shall meet! I am thankful to be in a church, and in a time, where we can move past the old idea of the “worship wars”. Do we sing the ancient hymns? The gospel songs? The latest and greatest of the contemporary Christian songs? Yes! While music is deeply tied to our sense of culture and our identity as church, the truth is that each style of worship music has its own strengths and weaknesses, and each style has a place in our worship. Ancient Hymns When it comes to the ancient hymns, with texts dating back as far as the beginning of the Reformation, you find music that has stood the test of time. What remains with us is truly the best the style has to offer, in terms of theological depth, poetry, and musical setting. To sing these songs is also to join with the church across time, and I believe there is value in that experience of our history. Gospel Songs Often, when people talk to me about singing the “old hymns” in worship, they‟re referring to a totally different tradition, what we call “gospel songs”. Basically, these are hymns-with-a-chorus, but more broadly, this is the musical tradition of the American church in the 20th century. Southern gospel music, in particular, is a big part of our heritage. These songs reflect a deep faith and trust in God, and embody a spirit of revival. Modern Worship Music It can be difficult to nail down broad traits of “Contemporary” music, because we‟ve been singing it for about 50 years! Some of those songs are hardly “contemporary”, but I think they still have the same general spirit. Modern worship songs tend to be more reflective, often focusing on a repeated text as a meditation. This can be a great way to enter into prayer, and can help us to encounter God. Their focus tends to be on adoration, and on the power and majesty of God. Regardless of style, good worship songs are accessible, singable, and have a text that is theologically sound and spiritually impactful. And above all, they only work if there is a congregation that is singing them and worshipping together. As always, it is a joy to sing with you!

The Easter Egg Hunt and activities were great fun! Thank you to all the individuals who donated candy and eggs. We had about 100 people on our campus for the activities and hid about 3,000 eggs for the children to hunt. The children
made resurrection snacks, decorated crowns and necklaces, played in the bounce house and wore a “He is Alive” face tattoo. All children received a The Very Best Morning story book to take home in a gift bag and we offered plenty of healthy snacks for everybody. It was a wonderful community outreach. Thank you to the Senior Center group, YAH-WHOs, and youth who helped stuff the eggs and get them counted to hide. Also, a special thanks to the YAH-WHO ladies who helped prepare the snacks and work the activities.
We are so excited about the fun things planned this summer! Our Terrific Tuesdays program is filling up fast, so turn in your registration form and $30 fee to reserve a spot now. Early registration is until May 20th. After that the fee increases to $40. The program begins on June 5th and the last activity will be July 24th. Our end of summer musical will be at 6 PM on Sunday, July 29th.

On the weeks that include water play, please send a beach towel and sunscreen with them in a bag. Your child must be signed in /out each week so please do not drop them off at the sanctuary door.
We will be having a baby dedication service on Sunday May 13th. Please contact me or the church office, by May 7th if you would like to have your child included in this celebration. We will call all parents, siblings, and babies up from the congregation to pray over and present them with a dedication certificate.
If your child has signed up for Kids Camp June 19-22 we will be having a short meeting after worship on May 20st. I will be passing out info packets and forms. Please make sure to attend this meeting or make arrangements with me if you are unable to attend.

Please make sure you register your children online and that you have signed up to volunteer! We still need lots of volunteers to make it run smoothly. We need 70 volunteers and we currently have 30. Boy Scout Troop 228 Celebrates its 9th Year Anniversary
Boy Scout Troop 228 celebrated its 9th year anniversary on Monday night, April 2nd, during its
Troop meeting. Some 46 Scouts and leaders celebrated the event.
Under the leadership of „plank holders‟ Scoutmaster Nick Liberatore and Troop Committee
Chairman Mike Bean and the very appreciative sponsorship of Locust Grove, it has made many
noteworthy contributions to our community and North Alabama. In addition to the Troop, Locust
Grove sponsors a Cub Scout Pack and now a Troop Venturing Crew that consists of both boys
and girls 17 years and older.
During its 9 years of operations, the Troop qualified and awarded Eagle Scout recognitions to 10 Scouts and has 2 more
Scouts awaiting their awards at its next Court of Honor, with several Scouts close to achieving the rank. Certainly Locust
Grove remembers the contributions of the Eagles who made improvements to the church, refurbishing the playground
and refreshing the marquee at the front of the church, among many other projects done in our community as a part of
their Eagle project requirements. Now all of these young men are attending college, serving in our military or working in
the community, yet they continually provide youth leadership to younger scouts.
Congratulations to Troop 288 and its brother units, Pack 288 and the Venturing Crew and thanks to Locust Grove for its
sponsorship of a noteworthy participant of our American heritage.
