Throughout Scripture, mountains serve as the place of divine revelation.

When God gave Moses the Law, He had Moses ascend to the top of Mt. Sinai.

“Go up this mountain of the Abarim, Mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab, across from Jericho; view the land of Canaan, which I give to the children of Israel as a possession; and die on the mountain which you ascend, and be gathered to your people, just as Aaron your brother died on Mount Hor and was gathered to his people” (Deut 32:49-50).

Jesus taught the “Sermon on the Mount.”

Jesus has been given great, all-encompassing authority.

It is here referred to as “all authority in heaven and on earth.”

“He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church” (Eph 1:22).

Jesus “has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, angels and authorities and powers having been made subject to Him” (1 Pet 3:22).

Jesus’ authority is the basis of this commission.

Jesus Commissioned the Church to Go “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations” (v 19).

Jesus wants His church to go.

“Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature” (Mk 16:15).

“Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem” (Lk 24:46-47).

“As the Father has sent Me, I also send you” (Jn 20:21).

“But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth” (Acts 1:8).

In Acts, the church went.

“Philip went down to the city of Samaria and preached Christ to them” (Acts 8:5).

After his vision of Christ, “Ananias went his way and entered the house [where Saul was staying]” (Acts 9:17).

After the Lord intervened, Peter went with those from Cornelius’ household and the day after he left he “entered Caesarea” (Acts 10:23-24) and preached the gospel to Cornelius’ household.

“Being sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia, and from there they sailed to Cyprus. And when they arrived in Salamis, they preached the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews” (Acts 13:4-5).

We need to be going!

How do we go?

Some of us have gone to foreign countries.

But, there’s more we can all do.

Financial giving.

“Whenever I journey to Spain, I shall come to you. For I hope to see you on my journey, and to be helped on my way there by you” (Rom 15:24).

The Philippians helped Paul in his endeavors (Phil 4:15-16).

We can go to those who are lost.

Jesus Commissioned the Church to Make Disciples “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations” (v 19).

What does it mean to make a disciple?

“Disciple” basically means “learner.”

Christian discipleship is no easy matter.

“If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me” (Matt 16:24).

“If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple” (Lk 14:26).

“Whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple” (Lk 14:33).

“If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed” (Jn 8:31).

“By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples” (Jn 15:8).

Jesus Commissioned the Church to Baptize Disciples “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (v 19)

Disciples are made by being baptized and by being taught.

As you read through Acts, you notice that those who accepted the call to Christian disciples were baptized.

“Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them” (Acts 2:41).

“When [the Samaritans] believed Philip as he preached the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized” (Acts 8:12).

After the jailer had washed Paul and Silas’ stripes, “immediately he and all his family were baptized” (Acts 16:33).

This baptism is to be done “in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”

But Acts refers to baptism in the name of Jesus Christ.

Why the difference?

The preposition in Matthew 28 means “into.”

The preposition in Acts 2:38 means “upon.”

Jesus Commissioned the Church to Teach Disciples “Teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you” (v 20).

Throughout Matthew, Jesus is presented as a teacher.

“And seeing the multitudes, He went up on a mountain, and when He was seated His disciples came to Him. Then He opened His mouth and taught them” (Matt 5:1-2).

“He spoke many things to them in parables” (Matt 13:3).

Jesus set leaders in His church (Eph 4:11-13).

Christian maturity is important.

“When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things” (1 Cor 13:11).

“Solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil” (Heb 5:14).

The disciples were to teach all things. Do you need to come and become a disciple of Jesus Christ?
