MBOT’s Advocacy Influence & the Strength of Chamber Network
Jeffrey Percival – 2015 MBOT Chair,Pallett Valo LLP
CHAIR’S MESSAGE
As the 2015 Chair, I have seen first-hand the powerful impact and influence of Mississauga Board of Trade within the business community in Mississauga and beyond.
I recently had the opportunity to join our esteemed President & CEO, Sheldon Leiba, on a very informative journey to scenic Cornwall, Ontario for the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC).
MBOT has been a longstanding member of the OCC and has worked hard to earn its status as an Accredited Chamber of Commerce through the OCC. Accreditation is a highly sought recognition for a chamber of commerce or board of trade (the terms are used interchangeably) that adheres to programs and policies supportive of three key pillars: Policy/Advocacy, Membership Programs/Services and Organization/Administration. MBOT has repeatedly stood out for its commitment to the principles behind Accreditation, which means greater benefit for you as our esteemed members.
The OCC AGM brings together once per year the entire chamber network from across Ontario, ranging from very small chambers of commerce in primarily tourist towns to much larger chambers - such as your very own MBOT – representing significant manufacturing and industrial communities in the GTA.
I am very pleased to report the extremely high esteem that MBOT enjoys among the leadership and members of the OCC. Sheldon Leiba is a Director of the OCC and his lengthy experience within the chamber network has made him a clearly valuable and valued resource within the OCC.
Some of the highlights of this year’s OCC AGM in Cornwall included:• An opening night reception with Premier Kathleen Wynne, where Sheldon and I had the opportunity to thank
her for the recently announced provincial funding for the Hurontario LRT and to reiterate ongoing business concerns in Mississauga;
• Extensive networking with other chambers and boards of trade, particularly in relation to discussing best-in-class practices for fostering strong membership relationships;
• A fascinating presentation by the Association of Chambers of Commerce Executives (ACCE) on eight influences shaping the next decade for Chambers of Commerce, including demographic, technological and logistical challenges;
• An exciting and spirited debate on policy resolutions, including resolutions proposed by MBOT related to creating pan-Canadian training and certification standards and promoting greater transparency in the provincial “Open for Business” initiative; and
• Dynamic social networking events showcasing this year’s host, the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce, and next year’s host, the Oakville Chamber of Commerce.
MBOT’s membership and it’s leadership within the OCC is a truly significant added value of your membership. By sharing ideas and proposals with the greater chamber network, MBOT remains at the cutting edge of board of trade best practices. This includes MBOT continually refining the services and advocacy that it provides for its members. In this sense, MBOT never ceases to improve both by soliciting and acting on member input and by constantly absorbing the best practices of a much wider and varied group of chambers and boards of trade. The result is that as an MBOT member, you benefit greatly from the power of the many to advocate for the most open and competitive climate possible for business in Ontario.

Transformational Technologies: What Business Leaders Need to Know?
Sheldon Leiba, MBOT President & CEO,Mississauga Board of Trade
Show me a business that isn’t keeping up with technological changes, and I’ll show you a business that will get eaten up by competition or simply not survive.
Technology today is evolving rapidly and ever changing. Technology is core to every business, its operations, communications, and service or product delivery. Larger businesses often have the benefit of in-house technological experts or resources at its disposal to help ensure that the business is fully leveraging emerging technology capabilities. However, many smaller businesses and entrepreneurs, while maybe having an adequate knowledge and understanding of technology, can still not keep pace with the technological advancements happening every day that has a bearing on their business.
Business leaders need to stay on top of emerging technologies to be innovative, productive and competitive. But, how can one do so when there is so much to learn, know and keep up with, and little time.
Mississauga Board of Trade (MBOT) is fortunate to have within our membership over 60 companies in Information Communication Technology (ICT). From multinationals and Fortune 500, to small IT service providers, our ICT members are a strong pool of resources that we can leverage to help inform, educate and support our broader membership, and in fact the broader business community.
On June 23, at Microsoft Canada’s head office in Mississauga, MBOT will be launching new ICT programming, entitled “Transformational Technologies: What Business Leaders Need to Know?” The program will be a highly informative and interactive session on transformational technologies that are changing businesses and workplaces. Microsoft Canada President, Janet Kennedy, will kick-off with day with opening remarks, followed by three facilitated expert panel sessions on: Cloud & Managed Services; Mobile Workforce; and Enhanced Voice Platforms.
The half-day program, sponsored by Microsoft Canada and Bell, will also include an ICT tradeshow showcasing various MBOT ICT companies.
I encourage our members to take advantage of this unique opportunity connect with local Information, Communication, Technology experts, along with other business leaders for invaluable learning, insight, sharing and exchange.
MBOT is committed to continuing to engage our ICT members towards developing future programming, information and resources to support business in fully capitalizing on emerging technologies.

Game on Mississauga!
BUSINESSESNEED TO BE READY
The Toronto 2015 Pan Am & Parapan Am Games will take place over 16 days in July (July 10-26) and seven days in August (Aug. 7-15) respectively and Mississauga businesses need to be prepared.
The games will host more than 10,000 athletes and officials from 41 countries as well as tourists, media and members of the games family. The City of Mississauga will be host to Pan Am sporting events including taekwondo, judo, wrestling and karate and Para Pan events including wheelchair rugby, powerlifting and goalball.
Mississauga is one of 14 communities outside of Toronto hosting events as part of the international sporting event. The impact is expected to be significant both from an economic perspective (positive) and a day to day one (maybe not so much).
Businesses are a key part of the transportation plan for the Games. The province and the city are committed to minimizing the impacts on the region and have reached out to businesses to help them to plan ahead. To avoid added congestion and costly delays for business it will be important to find ways to reduce traffic levels.
DEVELOP A TRAVEL PLANBusinesses can contribute by making a travel plan that helps goods and employees avoid rush-hour travel. The City of Mississauga has plans to implement temporary traffic measures for the Games and here is the city’s check list for businesses:• Visit www.ontario.ca/games2015 to download a
business guide and sign up for email updates to get the latest information.
• Develop a Games Travel Plan that encourages your staff to rethink the way they travel, for example carpooling (Google Pan Am Travel Guide).
• Adjust delivery schedules outside of peak hours (morning and afternoon rush hour periods) to avoid delays.
• Notify your staff, customers and visitors about changes that may affect them.
• Sign up for Smart Commute’s special Games Service (http://www.smartcommute.ca/GamesService )
Temporary HOV network will be activated on June 29 and will be open to vehicles with three or more people until July 27. Starting July 28, lanes will be open to vehicles with two or more people for the Parapan Am Games. Smart Commute is offering a special service for businesses beyond its regular members. Smart Commute experts will work with your business to explore commuting options and support the development of a Games travel plan that will help your staff get around efficiently.
CARPOOLING IS A GREAT OPTIONThe Ministry of Transportation (MTO) is partnering with municipalities along the Games Route Network to implement an Off-Peak Deliveries (OPD) Pilot designed to help reduce transportation demand at peak hours and keep businesses moving during the Games. MTO is seeking participants from businesses best suited for OPD including retail, food and beverage, and appropriate service sectors. For more information, contact Matthew Verrall at [email protected].
OFF-PEAK DELIVERIES
During the Pan Am and Parapan Am Games, temporary traffic changes will be in place near Mississauga Sports Centre (MIS) typically known as the Hershey Centre near Kennedy Rd. and Matheson Blvd. E. Plans are subject to change, so be sure to visit www.ontario.ca/games2015 regularly for the latest information.
If there are questions, businesses should contact [email protected]

Provincial & Federal Budget Analysis By Peter Nogalo, Vice Chair Policy
With not one, but two governments recently tabling budgets there is much news to digest from the business perspective. With a vote coming this fall, the federal government presented a pre-election budget that promises a slight surplus for the first time since the recession. On the other side of the electoral cycle, the Ontario government’s budget reintroduced many of the initiatives promised during last year’s provincial election. The following represents key highlights of relevance to business from both the federal and provincial budgets.
Provincial BudgetHurontario LRT: The biggest provincial news froma local perspective actually preceded the budget, with the province announcing it would fully fund the Hurontario LRT, running from Port Credit to Brampton. The $1.6 billion project, spanning 23 kilometres is set to be completed in 2022. Three GO stations will be connected by light rail, providing access to a regional talent pool for Mississauga businesses. Part of the funding for the LRT and other infrastructure projects will come from the sale of provincial assets, including up to 60% of Hydro One.
Deficit: Coming in at $10.9 billion, the provincial deficit is projected to be slightly higher in 2015-2016 than the year previous. The government has committed to eliminate the deficit by 2017-2018.
Cap and Trade Plan: The government reiterated its plans to implement a cap and trade system in an attempt to limit carbon emissions and address climate change. Businesses will be capped on the amount of carbon they can emit, while being able to trade in unused carbon credits. MBOT and the Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC) is closely monitoring the file and consulting with the government to address concerns by the business community.
The Ontario Retirement Pension Plan (ORPP): Reiterating a campaign plank from last year, the government plans to go ahead with the ORPP. The plan would be similar to the CPP, with contributions from both employees and employers. Companies with comparable pension plans would be exempt. The question remains as to what constitutes a “comparable” plan. Would RRSP matching, for example, be considered comparable? Again, MBOT and the OCC are working closely on this file.
Federal BudgetBalanced Budget: The federal government predicts a balanced budget for 2015-2016 and a surplus of $4.8 billion for the following year. The federal contingency fund has, however, dropped to $1 billion.
Support for Manufacturing: The government proposes an accelerated depreciation treatment for investments in manufacturing equipment, allowing businesses to write off up to 95% of the investment costs over five years.
Small Business Tax rate: The tax rate for small businesses will drop from 11% to 9% by 2019.
Tax Free Savings: Of particular note to small business owners and other Canadians looking to save for retirement is an increase in the annual contribution limit on tax-free savings accounts from $5,500 to $10,000.
Auto Innovation: The government has pledged $100 million to support innovation in Canada’s auto industry. The government has also divested its stake in General Motors for a gain of $2.1 billion.

Connie Clerici CEO & President of Closing the Gap Healthcare and visionary leader was the keynote for Mississauga Board of Trade’s first Women’s Leadership Forum event titled, A Lifetime of Leadership: Career Phases & Stages which included a panel discussion. The engaging panel featured three amazing women who are innovators and farsighted leaders in their own fields. Superior Court of Ontario Justice Gertrude Speigel stated that “we really can be happy with 80 percent,” she said that it is impossible to give 110% to everything and we need to be okay with 80%!
Mayor Bonnie Crombie agreed that the idea of a healthy career/life balance is a myth, “you can’t have it all! Everything comes with a price, something has to give!” “Focus is needed to get ahead. As women we are always multi-tasking, decide on your top priorities and say no to everything else” stated Teawna Pinard, a life coach, author and founder of the organization Women Leading Legendary Lives.
Keynote speaker Connie Clerici offered, “I think that you can have it all but in your own definition of success.”
Mayor Crombie finished of the event by saying “Know yourself, stay true to your values, take risks and create opportunities. A great support system plays a key role in achieving success!"

We’ve heard about internet marketing, e-marketing, e-productivity, ecommerce, interactive marketing, and now, digital marketing. While the name changes, the importance never diminishes. Today, digital marketing is the engine that drives big and small businesses alike.
Think Digital Marketing is Not a Big Thing? … Think Again!
By Lee McTavish
WHAT IS DIGITAL MARKETING?The core of a digital marketing strategy is a well-designed website. “It’s essential for every business to have an effective website that supports their business goals, such as lead generation and customer acquisition, while also providing customers with the information they seek,” says Michelle Corsano, President, Burst Technology Marketing (www.burstmarketing.ca). “Surprisingly, 20% of businesses don’t even have a website!”
TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE POWER OF DIGITAL MARKETING
Making the move towards communicating a company’s brand through digital marketing is an important step for any business. Many small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) share the same concern, “How can I possibly outspend bigger companies with large marketing budgets?” In reality, the barriers to entry are actually lower for digital campaigns
One strategy for outsmarting the competition is developing in-house talent. “There are no barriers to entering the digital marketing field. The only requirement is curiosity and drive to try new things,” says Calder. “People who have a natural curiosity and can easily adapt to a moving environment typically excel in digital marketing.”
To develop talent, the three-course Certificate in Digital Marketing Management is one of the fastest growing
programs offered by the University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies (learn.utoronto.ca). The program is available at the St. George campus and online, and was just launched in Mississauga in January 2015. “Our courses accelerate learning” observes Corsano, lead instructor for the School’s certificate program. “Students who complete our courses quickly gain the knowledge and practical skills—a powerful combination—to plan and execute online strategies.”
Calder, also an instructor in the School’s certificate program, observed that for SMBs to strengthen their digital communication, all employees should be encouraged to get comfortable with it because the benefits filter through the entire organization.
Regardless of your industry, digital marketing can be a disruptive force. Get the knowledge and skills your company needs to take advantage of the possibilities digital marketing presents.
An effective digital marketing strategy integrates the right platform (e.g., Twitter, LinkedIn), the right technology (e.g., mobile, website), and the right tactics (e.g., digital advertising, email marketing) to reach and drive customers to take the desired action (e.g., buy your product). While it sounds extremely technical, digital marketing combines fundamental marketing principles with technology to amplify them to achieve better results; it’s a balance of the two.
compared to traditional media, making it ideally-suited for SMBs. According to Tyler Calder, Director of Enterprise Paid Search and Social Media, Search Engine People (searchenginepeople.com), “It’s not about outspending competitors; digital marketing is about outsmarting them.”
Lee McTavish, M.Ed., PMP, is Program Director, Business Programs and Part-nerships, University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies. For more infor-mation on the School of Continuing Studies visit www.learn.utoronto.ca and the Certificate in Digital Marketing Management.

Successful organizations developleaders for the future.
Every organization, large or small, needs strong leadership. Leadership is the only way in which you will continue holding on to and sustaining competitive advantage. In today’s global market, the need for strong and effective leadership is unprecedented. Unfortunately, studies show only 30 to 40 per cent of organizations are well prepared to fill their vacant leadership positions should the need arise. This raises the question: What is the status of your leadership team? Are you at risk from potential retirements? Do you have gaps in the leadership pipeline? Has the criteria for leadership in your organization changed? Are you failing to develop new leaders within your organization? Guidelines below will assist you in creating a foundation for leadership development within your organization.
By Nance MacLeod-Lutchin
IDENTIFY CORPORATE COMPETENCIESThe first step is to confirm future business trends and determine your strategic plan. Once this is complete, identify the leadership competencies needed to realize your future by identifying just what leadership behaviours, knowledge, skills, abilities and personal attributes are required for continued success.
CONDUCT A TALENT ASSESSMENTNext you need to conduct an assessment of individuals in current positions as well as those you perceive as having the ability to progress in their careers. Determine if they have the set of skills you are looking for and rate them from excellent, to developing to poor performance.
CREATE A SUCCESSION PLANDevelop a succession-planning map for each position. Name at least three individuals per job and identify whether they are fully ready now or will be within a stated time frame. Next, determine what needs to be done to get each person ready and prepare a career-development plan.
CANDIDATE PSYCHOMETRIC ASSESSMENTSNext, have the selected individuals, those with high potential and required skills, undertake a psychometric assessment. These tools will provide in-depth information on verbal, numerical and mechanical reasoning as well as personality traits, attitudes, beliefs and behaviours.
PROMOTE EFFECTIVE CAREER MANAGEMENTMany individuals believe once they have a job, that’s the end of their career search. Over the course of one’s career, there
could be many opportunities for different experiences and/or career advancement. As part of your training program, offer career-management courses that will assist individuals identify their own skills, abilities, motivations and desires and then create a career plan.
GROW TOMORROW’S LEADERS TODAYLeadership research shows highly successful companies develop leaders at all levels of the organization. This means developing individuals from the front line to mid-level to top executive positions. Create an active development process to prepare people for the next level in their career. This should involve a combination of in-house training in technical areas and general courses, such as problem solving and decision making.
CONSISTENT LEADERSHIP PROGRAMIn my opinion, one of the most effective leadership training is place groups of leaders into a longer-term program with the same instructor. The purpose of this approach in leadership training is also a culture-building strategy. If your leaders are sent individually to different leadership-training programs, each using different theories, there will be no consistency and no culture building. Also, as seen in most cases there will often be little or no skill development, as it times to practice and develop the skills.
CREATE A COACHING CULTUREThis requires your managers to build strong communication skills, including the ability to ask questions, to provide effective feedback, paraphrase what has been said and reflect information back to employees. Leaders need to be trained in a coaching methodology best suited to your organization, because you need to ensure coaching throughout your organization is consistent.

You’re not alone. You need support – now.
1. Trust Timing. What seems irreconcilable can break through wondrously. When my mother passed, suddenly Dad accepted my support. Impatience slows progress.
2. Detach. When your headway is zero, let go of control. Attachment to what they “should” do creates resistance. Out-of-the-box solutions only arrive when you’re open.
3. Reframe Self-Talk. Ready for phone calls or visits like an important business meeting or client interaction – rather than “psyching up”. Operate with facts. Go in confident.
4. Practice Appreciation. What we focus upon expands. Unwanted thoughts bring more unwanted. What if you expressed gratitude for your parents’ positive traits?
5. QTIP! Quit Taking It Personally. Your folks’ “naughty” behaviors aren’t about you. Allow them to drone on about glory days. For some, it’s all they have left.
6. Feel. It’s OK to experience so-called “negative” feelings such as anger and resentment. Senior care is a draining marathon. You will find the strength to get through.
7. Self-Care is a Necessity. It’s not a luxury squeezed in after chores. Elderly caregivers have a 63% higher mortality rate than their peers. Daily time for you isn’t negotiable. It’s not selfish.

Video Production Explained (Part 2 – Preparation - The Tough Part)By David Wojcik
In part 1, we discussed the Mind Dump Phase. In part 2, we’ll start to put some preparation to the plan. Here are some tips to help you make your video spectacular and use your budgeted dollars efficiently. 1. Storyboard your video with as much detail as you can think of. A storyboard will have a visual
with details of what the final video will look like. It will also have a description of text that will appear on screen as well as any graphics or animation.
2. Shot list your storyboard. This will assist your producer / director to group shots in order to save time. The shot list outlines the type of shot, angle and which camera shot is the primary.
3. This is a good time to start auditioning talent. Do you need on camera actors? Decide what talent you want: male, female, age, ethnicity, etc. Will there be voice over talent?
David Wojcik is the President of EKNA Production House, a full service digital asset man-agement provider specializing in corporate video and broad-cast production. David is also the host and executive pro-ducer of BiZ TV Canada and BiZ Radio Canada..
4. This is also a good time to select music and decide if you’ll be using royalty free music or a custom composed piece. Music is subjective, so give your producer an idea of the kind of music you “hear” in your head for your video. Start with a popular tune. This is especially critical when having a custom piece composed.
5. Graphics can be a big part of your video and animating text and graphics can make a huge impact on your viewer. 6. Animation can add another dimension to your video thereby adding a creative element.7. Select potential locations for your shoot and build in a plan “B” and “C” when you’re planning on shooting outdoors.8. If you are considering aerial shots, drone shots are quite popular now and affordable. 9. Finally, this is the time your production company can give you a firm number on what your production will cost and
gives you time to make adjustments to the production or the production budget.
In part 3, we’ll discuss the production day, when the rubber hits the road.

5 Things the Best Sales People Do ConsistentlyBy Linda Kern
Linda Kern is a sales con-sultant at Linda Kern & Associates. Call or email Linda Kern & Associates today 416-520-4897 or [email protected].
1. Know Your Numbers: The highest performing sales people have a clearly defined sales goal broken down by quarter that considers any seasonality in their business. They then track this number weekly if the sales cycle is relatively short, or monthly if it takes them longer to close a deal.
2. Target Your Ideal Customer: Identify the types of companies that you would like to target. Factors to con-sider: industry, demographics, company size, specific department. After you have identified, determine how and what services they need that you can offer.
3. Review Your Won and Lost Deals: Sometimes called a post-mortem, this type of analysis can give you a great deal of information about what went well, in the case of won deals, and what went wrong when you lose a deal. Be sure to conduct this analysis with someone who knows your business like your boss, mentor, or coach.
4. Know and Follow Your Sales Process: High achieving sales people follow a prescribed process for finding leads, booking appointments, conducting sales calls, presenting a proposal and closing the sale. Every industry will be different in this regard, so it’s important that you know the process that suits not just how you can best sell your product or service, but how your customers buy.
5. Block Your Time, Stick to the Right Activity and Stay Accountable: Introduce the concept of weekly time blocking in your daily routine to ensure you block time with the right activities needed for a successdul sale. Stay accountable to your tracking to make sure you are doing what needs to be done to achieve success.
