What does it take to win a Federal Liberal nomination? Ask Jeannette Chau, P.Eng.

As a long time Liberal volunteer now running as a nomination candidate for Mississauga-Erin Mills, Jeannette Chau is literally trying to change the world and accomplish something that has never been done before in Canada.

As the daughter of immigrant parents, Chau knows what it means to work hard and overcome obstacles. She was born in Toronto and graduated with degrees in Microbiology and Electrical Engineering from the University of Toronto. She holds a P.Eng designation and an MBA from the Schulich School of Business.

Should Chau be elected, she would become the fi rst female engineer Member of Parliament ever in the federal government. Many want to see her type of knowledge and skills in our government leaders. Combine this with her twenty-fi ve years of business experience and over ten years in the Canadian Forces Reserves and any incumbent would be worried of campaigning against her. Th e Liberal party will need a very strong candidate in the next election to campaign against incumbent Conservative MP Bob Dechert. Th e challenge for Jeannette is fi rst winning the nomination election.

To run in the federal election as a candidate of any major party, the candidate has to win a nomination election. Th e previous riding of Mississauga-Erindale has been split to form two new ridings: Mississauga-Erin

INAUGURAL EDITION: WELCOME

Look around the neighbourhood and a lot is changing. Just a few decades ago most of Erin Mills was made up of rural farmland. Today, Erin Mills Town Centre is undergoing a $100 million facelift and has already replaced its’ characteristic clock tower with a futuristic dome.

Th is private investment is being outdone by major transit investments by the city, province and federal government totalling over $259 million for the Mississauga Transitway. Th e Transitway is being completed in two Phases. Phase 1 is opening on Monday, November 17th and provides east-west service between City Centre Transit Terminal and Dixie Rd. Residents in the Erin Mills area will benefi t from Phase 2 which is currently under construction and is expected to be completed in 2016.

Th e Erin Mills portion of the Transitway will include stations at Erin- Mills/403 and Winston Churchill/403. Stations will include parking, heated/

Construction of dedicated Bus infrastructure at Winston Churchill Blvd / Hwy 403

air conditioned waiting areas, bicycle shelters and enhanced landscaping. Th ese stations are in addition to four stations just completed for phase 1.

Mills and Mississauga-Centre. Omar Alghabra has been already been voted in as the Liberal candidate for Mississauga-Centre. A nomination election to choose the Liberal candidate for Mississauga-Erin Mills is expected to be called soon.

According to Chau, the most diffi cult aspect of campaigning is recruiting members to join the Liberal party so that they can vote in the nomination election. Th ere is a $10 membership fee that must be paid directly by applicants and this is often a challenge in obtaining prospective new members. She is

confi dent that members who research all of the candidates will realize that she is by far the best candidate to win in the general election.

In addition to her impressive credentials and experience, Chau is a dedicated mom of two kids that became national level elite athletes. Her son recently came back from training and competing in Germany. She has written a book to help professionals Upsizing in a Downsizing Word and works at Professional Engineers Ontario overseeing province-wide programs. Her work recently as the co-chair of the Western GTA MOVE Transportation Task Force has given her regional exposure and has earned her a solid reputation as a transportation expert. She’s working hard to inform local residents of what she brings to the Liberal Party.

Chau was the fi rst candidate to be “green lit” by the party. Competitors have since followed and are listed alphabetically:

Ranked ballotsVote twice or more, legallyIn city, provincial and federal elections, voters choose a single candidate on their ballot. Th e candidate that receives the most votes wins. A majority is not necessary. We have all seen candidates win elections with dismal voter support.

With a preferential or ‘ranked’ ballot, voters rank candidates. Th e candidate with the least votes gets eliminated and their votes go to the remaining candidates based on the rankings. Th e fi rst candidate to reach 50% support wins.

Most of us have only seen preferential voting on television for the election of party leaders. For these elections, delegates are present for the duration of

How to VoteTh ere are many candidates running so you will need to rank your choices in order of your preference. Put “1” beside the name of your fi rst choice candidate, a “2” for your second choice candidate, and so on.

Who to Choose? You should vote for the best candidate. Th e candidate should demonstrate leadership, knowledge, integrity, and represent the entire community.

Jeannette Chau is a highly skilled professional with years of experience, leadership, accomplishments, and a desire to make change. She lives in the riding and is the strongest candidate to compete and win against the incumbent Conservative MP next year. Mark her as your fi rst choice. Or, if you prefer another candidate, mark her as your second choice.

the election and there can be long delays between voting as negotiations take place between candidates. Fortunately, party bylaws for nomination elections are simpler and you can vote twice or more by ranking the candidates on a single ballot with the numbers ‘1’, ‘2’ and so on. You do not have to stay at the polling location to keep voting. It is all done on a single ballot.

You’ve paid for your membership in the party and will be taking the time to vote, so why not make it count the most? Do your research and choose a 1st, 2nd and even 3rd candidate or more to support on your ballot.

When are elections?Th e simple answer is: we don’t know.

Th e Liberal Party of Canada will inform registered members when a nomination election is scheduled. As time is running out to prepare for the federal election next year, it is widely expected that the nomination election for Mississauga-Erin Mills can be called at any time.

Only residents of the riding that become party members and pay their $10 fee prior to the election being called are eligible to vote. If you have not yet become a member, or if you have a

spouse or child (as young as 14) that is not registered, please register them as soon as possible.

As a party member, you get the responsibility of choosing the Liberal candidate that will represent the riding in the next federal election. In the general election, your choices for each party have already been selected for you.

Lest We ForgetOn October 22nd Corporal Nathan Cirillo was gunned down while standing guard at the National War Memorial. Th e gunman stormed into the Parliament building and shots were fi red. He struck at our nation’s capitol and changed our world forever. We will move on from this tragedy, but we will be less open, less trusting, against those who seek to harm. And I mourn this loss of what we had.

On November 11th we will gather to remember those who served to protect our country and our rights and freedoms. As a former Canadian Forces Reservist myself, who served for over a decade, I have always observed this day and refl ected on those who have served before me, and those who continue to serve. Th is year it will be an even more solemn event for myself and others.

Th is Remembrance Day, I encourage everyone to stop and observe the moment of silence traditionally done at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month. We live in a great country. We will hold strong in the face of those who seek to intimidate us. We will remember who we are and what we believe in. We will remember those who gave their lives for our freedoms. And we will persevere.
