SA VINGS AND LOAN BUILDING

T O ESIGN a modern savings and loan association office

build;og Ihal would not comlJoe le visually wilh an old

capitol of historical ~ i g n f a n c e . in summary, is how archite<: ls for the award·winni ng

Fi rst federal struct ure de$Cribe a planning problem faced in

early project $I udy.

Th e architects encountered other Ilwblems. Most pressing

was the value of si te location, at the cily's main traffic corner

and diagonally across from Mississ ippi's Old Capito l, recentl y

restored as a stale hislOrical museum.

The sile's Ilroximily 10 the Old Ca pitol posed serious des ign

obligations. It was dec ided ea rly in The design studies Ihat

no e ffor t would be made 10 compete with the beauti fu l ol d

w h·red brick building, des llite th e fact t ha i the program

demanded 81 least eig ht stor ies.It wa s felt any Slrong color for the new str uct ure would

domina te. thus conflict. Therefore. Georgia wh it e marble and

blue·black granite were chosen as the pri nCi l)al materials for

the e:xterior. T e:xtural effect was considere<:l. The claSl!ic COr·

nices and mou ldings of the Old Cal)itol called for a

somewhat smooth. contrasti ng treat ment for the new building.

Area req uirements of the ren tal office floo rs ahove the f i r ~ t floor permitted a set·back at the se<:o nd floor le" el 10 avoid

the effect of hlocking the end of the street. The $et· hack wa s

soft ene<:l by the use of Ihe ma:ximum amount of gla ss on the

second Hoor and with slllatt Ih'e oak trees in redwood planters

on the firs t fl oor roof.

The function of a savings and loan association, though

similar to a bank's ope ration, is different in one respect. Like

a hank il has a banking floor, hut unlike a hank . the banking

fl()()r is hu sy only arou nd the firs t of the month when mortgage

pa)'ments come due. To make the fl()()r open to the public

would ex hi bit too fre<;luently an almost emp ty space . There·

fore. it wa s dec ided that the banking floor should ha"e a

minimum of exposure.

To avoid the fomli dable barrier effect. typica l of the first

floo r, the arcbitects chose a polished hlue·black granite ext er ior

fin ish. Th e mirror finish of thi s material rellects the stred

~ th e Old Capitol and the night li ght s in subdued tones.

suits, the chamber accomm odates large representa.tive ceiling and wall sections.

The chamber contains 5,400 cubic feel and its

wa lls are 12/1 thick reinforced concrete. The entireconstruction is so precisely supported on 16 vibration isolation assemblies that its large mass hasa natura l frequency of only five cycles per second.

Foo tings for the springs are isolated from the restof the building and are set in undisturbed soil.

No linear dimens ion of the chamber is eitheralike or a simple multiple of any other dimension.Thi s dissimilar it ), facilitates sound distributi on and

creates a maximum number of sound vibrationmodes. All planes in the chamber are hard sur·

faced and the walls ha ve been given a high gloss

fini sh.Inside the chamber is a large "p addle-whed"

reAec tor susl>ended through the ceiling and sup ·ported by a pa ir of isolated pillan. A concre te·

loaded steel superstructure weighing one·and-a ·

half tons rests 0 11 vibration isolation assemblies atthe top of these pillars.

A motor·drive system for turning the reAec tor

is suspended from the steel superstructure; the

bearings wh ich support the reAecto r are al so

mounted on the superstructure. Thus, the chamberitself is thoroughl y insulated from mechanical vi·

brati on.In order to determine acoustical absorption,

sound of a kn ow n quality is introduced into thechamber through a speaker system and its echo·

life is measured to within 1% tolerance. Then,

by repeati ng the procedure with a 48 square footsample of acoustical material in the chamber, anew me asurement of echo.life is obtained which

expresses the sound absorption quality of the ma

terial being tested.A second roolll is immediately adjacent to the

chamber but acous tica lly isolated from it. Thi s

NEW YORK 'S LOBBY

Building.in New York see a color ful planting of

blossoms stretching ncross the bu ilding's lobby.

The building boasts one of the world's biggest

tropi cal gardens-with some 80 10 90 varieties

of trees and flowering plants blooming in pro fu sion

in the lobby .Ind tl rrs nged in planters throughout

the building.

Almost every counlr y 0 11 ea rth is represented in

the origins of these plants, whi ch range from li n )'

Between 450 and 500 ga llons of wa ler are used

each week by Equitable's three full·time gardcncn

in the cleaning, sprayi ng, feeding and watering of

green foli age and flowering plants. The idea is to

waler ju st enough 10 keep the plants healthy and

decorati\'e. Too mu ch watering would make plant s

grow to rapidly.

More th an a thousand plants grow throughout

the building's thi rty.eight office floors-and a

tour of ins]>OCtion with Mr. Frank Turek, one of

the garden's designers, or an associate at Julian

Roehrs and Co., the garden's contractors--takes

eight full hours.

The arrangement of the garden changes wi th

the season and individual plants are changed

every three weeks to keep them always at the peak

of th eir fl owering period.

This chan gin g and yet permanent garden is in

olle of the most highl y populated areas on a r t hNell' York City 's mid·town. A stone's throwaway

r om the brook is Rockefeller Ce nter. Next door is

the Time-and. Life Bu ilding. A few blocks dow n the

street lies teemi ng Times Square. But in the lobby

architec ts, realized the need to provide shade for the

have dwarfed the building, but a cantilevered

" thin shell" con crete ribbon ten feet wide proved

to be the answer.

A£ler we lding reinforcing bars to steel beams,

Since no framin g or forms were needed, the struc
