MITOSIS

What is Mitosis?

A period of nuclear cell division resulting in 2 daughter cells, each cell containing a COMPLETE set of chromosomes.

Why does Mitosis occur? To replace the dying cells with

new cells that are “exact” copies of the old cells.

Where does Mitosis occur?

Mitosis occurs in all somatic (NON-SEX) cells.

What type of cell division takes place in SEX cells?

MEIOSIS: Cell division resulting in 4 gamete cells, each containing HALF of the parental cell’s genetic material.
