Mixtures
2 or more substances mixed together but not chemically
combined
Air is a mixture
2 types of mixtures(Homogeneous or heterogeneous)
1) Heterogeneous*not well mixed*does not appear thesame throughout.• easily separated by
physical means (filtering, magnets)
Examples: fruit salad, vegetable soup, Granite}
2) Homogeneous Mixture
• Appears the same throughout
• Is well mixed• can be separated by
physical means
• EX: milk, air, suntan lotion, paint, clouds, lemonade
Types of Homogeneous mixtures
• A) solutions
• B) colloids
• C) suspensions
A) Solutions
• When one substance dissolves in another
• 2 parts solute and a solvent*solute is the substance that is dissolved
*solvent substance that does the dissolving
Alloys
• Metal solutions
• EX:
• Sterling silver is silver with small amounts of Copper dissolved in it
• Stainless Steel is iron and chromium
B) Colloids• Colloids are solutions.
They can be described as a substance trapped inside another substance. They can be identified by their characteristic scattering of light.
• do not separate on standing
• Mixed together but not dissolved
• EX:Milk is a colloid of butter fat globules dispersed within a water based liquid
c) Suspensions
• The size of the particles is great enough so they are visible to the naked eye.
• Blood and aerosol sprays are examples of suspensions.
