A WORD FROM THE EDITOR
This month started with the ICCON 3 a gathering of
fans and creators. I even joined in on a panel on Doctor Who.
Then I went to the North American Science Fiction
Convention (NASFiC) 2017. It was in San Juan Puerto Rico.
This was the first time a NASFiC was held in Latin America. I
was in a few panels and worked registration. It was a fun time
and I hope to write about it soon.
I had a nice day at Southern Media Con, enjoying the
company of the Stone Hill group. I also checked out Seminole
County Library’s Fan Fest. It was well attended by future fans.
Then I saw Dawn of the Dead (Saturday) and Day of the Dead
(Sunday) at the Enzian as part of their tribute to director George
Romero.
As I write I am getting ready to go to Worldcon 75 in
Helsinki.
Next month the Hugo Winners and maybe NASFIC
2017 report.

Officers: Tom Reed and Juan Sanmiguel
Members: Steve Cole, Ken Konkol, David Lussier, Dave Ratti
Guests: Christine , Ryan Gillespie, Bob Yazel
Venue: Orange County Main Library (Downtown Orlando)
Juan began a discussion of the 2017 Hugo finalists. He
explained the history of the Hugos and the rules. Juan looked at
the finalists in the following categories.
Best Novel
Best Novella
Best Novelette
Best Short Story
Best Graphic Story
Best Dramatic Presentation – Long Form
Best Dramatic Presentation – Short Form
Best Professional Artist
Best Fan Artist
Best Series
Juan indicated which works were available in the Orange County
Library and online. Juan ended the talk with a video recording of
N.K. Jemisin’s Hugo acceptance speech for Best Novel (read by
Alyssa Wong).
Culture Consumed
Juan, Patty Russell, and Ed Anthony saw Give Back to
Hogwarts, a musical based on the Harry Potter book series. The
show covered all of the books in 90 minutes and used songs from
Broadway musicals and pop hits.
Juan mentioned the proposed HBO series Confederate, set in an
alternate world where the Confederacy won the Civil War. The
show will be created by the same team that adapted Game of
Thrones. David Lussier did not think this world was possible.
Juan read a Twitter essay by N.K Jemisin that explained why the
show was a bad idea. He agreed with Jemisin.
Tim saw the trailer for the next Marvel Netflix series, The

Defenders. The show features Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke
Cage, and Iron Fist. The trailer had a cameo by Stan Lee. The
show will not be run by the same people who ran Iron Fist. Iron
Fist is generally thought to be the worst of the Marvel Netflix
series.
Steve Cole pointed out that there was plot hole in Wonder
Woman. The film does not explain what happens to the rest of
the crew of the German warship attacking Thymscira (Paradise
Island). Juan thought that they died in the attack on the beach.
Steve and others said that they would not have sent all of the
crew of the ship to the attack. It bothered Ken that it was set in
World War I. Juan heard it was done to distinguish the film from
Captain America.
Steve also recommended a new series by Margaret Weis and
Robert Krammes, The Dragon Brigand. He sees it as magic
punk rather than steampunk.
Tom saw Valerian and enjoyed it. Juan saw it too but thought the
leads were a bit flat.

nothing spectacular, as they have been in previous years.
Tomorrow as I write, there is a steampunk event in neighbouring
Mississauga, and we will have a patch of field to pitch a tent and
set up our tables.
Issue 355…I will start here by asking who of the membership is
at the San Diego Comic Con, seeing it’s on right now? A Toronto
fan, who’s been to Florida cons before, Dave Ross, is at SDCC as
Powdered Toast Man.
No one I know went to SDCC. Given how they limit their
numbers and getting a membership/ticket is very competitive it is
hard con to get into. This is a pity because if you look there a lot
of smaller panels not in the big hall which sound interesting.
Sounds like you’re once again discovering how expensive hotels
are when you want to stage your convention. Around here, some
conventions are moving from the suburbs into the big city, but
they are a minority. Some are moving into the suburbs to find
cheaper hotels, and there’s even a few cons who are leaving
hotels entirely, shrinking in size and renting church basements. I
don’t know how long it will be until our conventions are crowded
out entirely.
I am more optimistic that there can be space for smaller cons.
Not everybody wants to go to crowded shows.
I think I am done for the moment…the massive catchup
continues, and it’s only the fact this is Friday that allows that to
happen. Take care, all, and see you with the next monthly issue.
Yours, Lloyd Penney.

Dear OASFiSians:
I am so far behind, and I have two issues of the OASFiS Event
Horizon to comment on, so here goes. Volume 30, as well…
congratulations on so many years!
Issue 354…Good to see Oasis continues on as your local
convention. I see more and more people online wondering how
much longer we can all continue with our conventions. Other
newer fans may come in and change the convention you love
around to reflect their interests, which you may not share.
Worldcons are a thing of the past for us, so I hope that those who
are able to go to Finland for Worldcon 75 have themselves a fine
time. Great costumes; you should see the ones we wore at Motor
City Steam Con, the annual steampunk event in the Detroit area.
Great fun all around.
My letter…our sales at Anime North were relatively good, but
Ken asked some questions about the plot of War of the Planet of
the Apes. He was not clear about the motives of the different
human factions in the story. Juan gave his explanation, and
wondered if they will do a film with a spaceship landing on the
Earth with Apes in power. This was set up in the first of the new
films, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, where a TV news story
discusses the disappearance of a spaceship.
Business
Juan and Peggy will be looking at the finances from OASIS 29
before announcing plans for OASIS 30.
Juan will be at Worldcon during the August meeting, so Tom
will run the meeting and the book will be Soul Summoner by
Elicia Hyder.
Ken has offered his house for a future meeting. Juan has
concerns not having a meeting in a public place but asked Tom to
discuss this at the next meeting.
Tom will talk with Michael Pilletere on new blogging program
for the website.
Juan thanked Sarah Fisk of the Orange County Library for
helping out with putting the meeting/discussion together.
Meeting adjourned at 3:40PM
