When you meet a witness, you become a witness...

The first time I went to Poland was

almost 30 years ago. I traveled with

a small group of 9 Rabbis, one Cantor, a Jewish guide and a Pol-

ish guide. I was a guest of the Polish government. During that

trip, among other things, we visited Warsaw, the concentration

camps of Auschwitz, Birkenau and Triblinka. We attended a play

performed in Yiddish by Polish actors, and we met with young

Poles trying to deal with the realization that it was their parents

and grandparents who participated so actively in the Shoa.

As this newsletter comes to you, I will be on my way to Poland for

a second time. This time I will be traveling with a an organiza-

tion called March of the Living. Instead of a small group, there

will be thousands.

The March of the Living is a program that began in 1988 to bring

youth and adults from all over the world to Poland and Israel in

order to study the history of the Holocaust and to examine the

roots of prejudice, intolerance and hate. It plans its dates each

year so that thousands will march down the same 3-kilometer

path leading from Auschwitz to Birkenau on Holocaust Remem-

brance Day - Yom Hashoah - as a silent tribute to all victims

of the Holocaust. This is one of two of the highlights of the

program, reminding us of the continued existence of world Jewry

despite Nazi Germany’s attempts at our destruction. Many in the

group will then go on to Israel to celebrate a second highlight,

that of Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israel’s independence day, in the streets

of Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.

The March of the Living is mainly aimed at Jewish high school

students, Juniors and Seniors, but many others participate.

Among us will be Holocaust survivors, brave enough to return to

places that planned their end, along with US and other soldiers

who liberated the camps. As time goes on, there are fewer and

fewer eyewitness survivors or liberators. They will share their

stories as a way to remind all of us about the challenges, not only

of anti-semitism, but also living in a world divided.

This will be an emotionally challenging week. I look forward to

going with both anticipation and trepidation. Anyone who has

ever been on the March will tell you that they are forever changed.

Upon my return I hope to help recruit more of our High Schools

students, along with you, our members, to consider this life

changing journey

I conclude with the words of Judy Weissenberg Cohen, in a speech

given to students on the 1997 March of the Living, describing the

last time she saw her mother in the spring of 1944.

‘I never had a chance to say goodbye to my mother. We didn’t

know we had to say goodbye... I am an old woman today and I

never made peace with the fact I never had that last hug and kiss.’

Eli Wiesel teaches that when you listen to a witness, you become

a witness too. On this journey I will become a witness, not only to

the survivors and the liberators, but also a witness to the strength,

power and future of the Jewish people.

In Praise of Mothers

”How few were her pleasures, she never cared for fashion's styles…”

These are lyrics from the penultimate Jewish tribute to mothers. The song “My Yiddishe Momme” was composed by Jack Yellen and

Lew Pollack in 1925 and was a hit on the album, “Last of the Red Hot Mamas,” recorded and made famous by none other than Sophie

Tucker (nee Sonya Kalish). It is a tribute to the image of the mother in Jewish tradition; loving, struggling, working endlessly and

caring only for her children, her husband and her home. Sophie Tucker, in fact, recorded it following the death of her own mother

as a tribute to her.

Long before this modern day tribute, The Book of Proverbs (31:10-31) expounds upon the virtues of an Eishet Chayil or Woman of

Valor.

”Who can find a virtuous and capable wife? She is more precious than rubies…Reward her for all she has done. Let her deeds publicly

declare her praise.”

The singing of Eishet Chayil on Erev Shabbat is a tradition at many tables and is thought to go back to the 17th century. The melody,

like My Yiddishe Momme, is a beautiful and haunting blend of memory and feeling.

We all know the story of Jacob and his two wives, Leah and Rachel. Rachel was barren but ultimately gave birth to Joseph (the

scourge of his brothers but in the end their savior). Tragically, she would give birth to a second son, Benjamin, and then die on

the way and be buried, not in Machpelah (like the other Matriarchs and Patriarchs) but on the road at Efrat. Rashi expounds on

why Rachel was buried where she was:

"I (i.e. Jacob) didn't even take her into Beit Lechem itself which was in the land, and I know that you feel badly about this. But know

that God told me to do this, so that she will be a help to her children. When the King of Babylonia, will exile them and they will pass

by her grave, Rachel will come out and cry, and beg God for mercy. God, in turn, will answer and respond to her: 'There is reward for

your actions, so says the Lord, and your children will return to their borders.'"(Rashi, Genesis 48:8)

Rachel was honored for her devotion to the children of Israel. In the famous text from Jeremiah Chapter 31, this then repeats itself

with Rachel’s attribute of selfless love.

“A voice is heard on high, lamentation, bitter weeping, Rachel weeping for her children, she refuses to be comforted for her children

for they are not.” And the Lord answers: Refrain your voice from weeping and your eyes from tears, for there is reward for your work.”

A Woman of Valor, a keeper of home and hearth, a beautiful soul. On this Mother’s Day let us fondly remember our mothers who are

no longer here and those who still love and care for us each day.

“I long to hold her hands once more as in days gone by and ask her to forgive me for things I did that made her cry.”

WE LOVE YOU!! MOMS EVERYWHERE!!

Gerr-ala (aka Gerry) That’s what my mom called me.

We invite you to share our joy as our children, Benjamin and Anna, are called to the Torah for their b’nai mitzvah Saturday, May 28.

Ben, 7th grade, and Anna, 6th, attend Randolph Middle School. They have enjoyed going through the b’nai mitzvah experience together and have been so supportive and encouraging of one another. Their older sister, Sarah, became a bat mitzvah at MJCBY five years ago and Ben and Anna aim to outdo her performance before she leaves for college at the end of the summer!

Ben loves playing percussion and piano as well as enjoying soccer and skiing. He is looking forward to another awesome session this summer at Sprout Lake Camp. Anna plays percussion, loves cheer

leading, gymnastics, horseback riding, snowboarding and performing on stage in musical productions. Camp Echo is where she will spend part of this summer. Both Ben and Anna discovered a new passion last year when they became scuba certified. Their favorite activity, however, is hanging out with their little cousins!

For their mitzvah project, Ben and Anna met with Holocaust survivor, Olga Menzcer. Olga has taught our entire family, not only about her personal experiences during the Holocaust, but about being a model of strength and optimism. We have all benefitted immensely from this experience and have gained some insight as to how people with a spirit like Olga’s survived. We highly recom-mend this most meaningful mitzvah project.

Ben and Anna have attended Mommy & Me class through pre-school and religious school at MJCBY, and we wish to thank their teachers, Cantor Shana and Rabbi Nesson for preparing them for this milestone. Also, thanks to Gail, Michelle, Flo, Gerry and Mia for their support and smiles.

With love, Andrea, Austin, Sarah, Ben & Anna

Family News

It is with enormous pride that the Solotoff family invites the congregation of Morristown Jewish Center Beit Yisrael to share in the Bat Mitzvah of our daughter, Emily Sara Solotoff, as she is called to the

Torah on May 14. Emily is a seventh grade Honor Roll student at Randolph Middle School. She is also an avid and accomplished dancer, studying at and competing at the Dance Academy of North Jersey, with many of her friends. Emily has attended sleep away camp at Chestnut Lake Camp and many of her camp friends will be sharing her special day. She also will be participating in Harbor Hills' teen travel program this summer, as well as dancing in a national competition.

For her Mitzvah project, she and two of her friends raised several thousand dollars for breast cancer research, selling t-shirts and bracelets, in honor of the mother of one of her friends who suffered from breast cancer. In addition, given her love of animals, she rescued a cat, Brooklyn, from 11th Hour Rescue, who has quickly become part of our family along with our dog, Gracie. Emily also plans on donating a portion of her gifts to the Cat House at 11th Hour Rescue so more cats can be rescued and cared for. Also, her basket on the bimah will be a basket of pet supplies that she will donate, as well.

We are thankful to Cantor Shana, Rabbi Nesson and Emily’s Religious School teachers who have helped her prepare for this special day. Emily also acknowledges all of her teachers at Shalom Yeladim where she started her religious education.

We are excited to welcome all of our guests, including those who are coming from California, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Pennsylvania, as well as all of the members of the congregation, to share this special day.

With all of our love,Tammy, Eric, Emily Jaden, Gracie and Brooklyn Solotoff
