Welcome to the 20th manchester jazz festivalWe’ve come a long way since 1996, when a group of jazz enthusiasts assembled to plan a one day jazz festival for the people of Manchester. Now, 20 festivals and almost 5000 artist performances later, mjf is one of the highlights of Manchester’s cultural calendar

and widely acknowledged as the UK’s leading festival for contemporary jazz.

mjf is Manchester’s longest-running music festival - a celebration of northern music, northern talent, the best contemporary jazz from the UK and abroad, good times, great company and the best of Manchester.

We couldn’t have done it without the support of artists, listeners, volunteers, funders, sponsors and staff past and present –

a resounding thank you goes out to you all.

Join us as we celebrate 20 summers of jazz.

John Surman soprano & baritone saxophones, bass clarinet / Chris Laurence double bass Trans4mation String Quartet: Rita Manning violin / Patrick Kiernan violin / Bill Hawkes viola / Nick Cooper cello

Tonight’s performance is a one-off opportunity to experience one of Europe’s most acclaimed, adventurous and inventive musicians in the setting of the magnificent Reading Room.

This is sure to be a spine-tingling and evocative festival experience, as the reverberant acoustics enhance the lyrical melodies and haunting tones of Surman’s work.

Playing music from his landmark recordings The Spaces in Between and Coruscating set against brooding and sensitive string arrangements of the Trans4mation String Quartet. Surman’s work has been compared to the music of Vaughan Williams and Benjamin Britten, but jazz is always a crucial component, combining improvisation with European chamber, orchestral and choral music.

A rare opportunity to savour these world-class players in the splendour of St Ann’s Church.

A celebration of song: jazz ballads, old and new, alongside colours and rhythms drawn from scattered, surprising sources: a sudden flash of calypso, or the hypnotic lulling of an Armenian cradle song. From Cole Porter to Komitas, melodies from Eric Satie and John Coltrane, lyrics from James Joyce poems and Christina Rossetti nursery rhymes: they make it all their own.

Venier’s sense of harmony is flawless, and Gesing’s clarinet vaults between rhythm and melody. Winstone’s instantly identifiable voice is used ‘instrumentally’, interweaving improvised lines throughout this beautiful music.

Robert Glasper Trio

international

RNCM Theatre 20:00 (90 mins)

Robert Glasper piano / Vincente Archer double bass / Damion Reid drums

Glasper has emerged in recent years as a massively influential musical force, as jazz expands its horizons for a new generation. Pianist, bandleader, composer, producer and Grammy-winning Blue Note artist, he grew up immersed in Motown, R’n’B and gospel. His edgy command of both the jazz mainstream and the urban music landscape (characterised by his collaborations with hip-hop and R’n’B stars ranging from Emeli Sandé to Snoop Dogg) has set a new benchmark for jazz in the 21st century.

In 2015, Glasper returns to the acoustic piano trio format that characterised his early breakthrough, with a sound that creates a dynamic and hypnotic tension between free-wheeling improvisation and tight and irresistible rhythmic patterns.

Come and chill out for the final festival afternoon with some relaxing sounds to soothe your Sunday…

Natural CausesThwaites Festival Pavilion 13.00 (60 mins)

Hugh Nankivell piano, keyboards, vocals / Pat Allison clarinet, guitar, vocals / Chris Dowding trumpet, flugelhorn / Ben McCabe drums, French horn

Nankivell’s curious compositions have a distinct air of English eccentricity about them, taking inspiration from artists such as Robert Wyatt, XTC and Bjork. Their charm partly lies in improbable but poignant texts immersed in the soundworld created by the band: psychedelic lullabies, pinprick-precise ballads, unpredictable group improvisation and brotherly harmony across the board.

Shama Rahman BandThwaites Festival Pavilion 14.45 (60 mins)

Shama Rahman sitar, vocals, ukelele / Christopher Lane guitar / Nicolas Rouger soprano, alto, tenor & baritone saxophone / Thodoris Ziarkas double & electric bass / Oberon King drums, percussion

Sitar, stories and song weave together into original, playful music, drawing from Rahman’s Bangladeshi roots, childhood memories of Middle Eastern desert landscapes and encounters with London’s vibrant characters. The compositions reflect Britain’s multicultural metropolises, using jazz-inspired improvisation, classically-inspired melodies and folk-inspired storytelling, all accompanied by energetic rhythms of swing, funk, hip-hop, bossa nova and drum’n’bass.

Airelle Besson Quartet international

UK Première Thwaites Festival Pavilion 16.30 (60 mins)

Airelle Besson trumpet / Isabel Sorling voice / Benjamin Moussay piano, keyboards, Fender Rhodes / Fabrice Moreau drums

Bringing mjf to a close, Besson - French Jazz Musician of the Year and winner of the Django Reinhardt Prize - is a fast-rising star on the French music scene. A gifted composer, conductor and orchestrator (she studied with Wynton Marsalis), her music for this quartet is extremely personal: gently experimental songs animated by heartfelt lyrics, plaintive melodies and rolling harmonies.

A moving finale to mjf 2015 - be transported by music of astonishing spirituality and beauty.

The Art & Design Foundation course at Manchester School of Art, MMU, were set the task of choosing a track from one of the artists playing at mjf 2015 and asked ‘How do you respond to the track visually?’

A piece of artwork by Sophie Hill was chosen to be featured as the main festival creative image. Her inspiration was Gankino Horo by Makanitza, who play the Thwaites Festival Pavilion at 17.00 on Saturday 1 August.

More information on this exciting collaboration with MMU can be found at manchesterjazz.com
