18 – A Christmas Carol

Now in its 59th season, Milwaukee Repertory Theater is dedicated to providing the highest level of professional theater to Milwaukee and Wisconsin in addition to offering a wide range of educational and community programs. Located in the heart of downtown Milwaukee, the Patty and Jay Baker Theater Complex is a cleverly-converted power generation plant that houses Milwaukee Repertory Theater consisting of three theaters: the Quadracci Powerhouse (720 seats), the Steimke Studio (205 seats) and the Stackner Cabaret (118 seats), which is also a full-service restaurant and bar. Together, these spaces offer a variety of staging options from compelling dramas, powerful classics, award-winning contemporary works to full-scale musicals and comedies. Milwaukee Repertory Theater is committed to creating plays that are meaningful and relevant to the society we live in – plays that are challenging, visceral and engage the community through the issues they explore. With the start of the 2012/13 Season, The Rep expanded its Artistic Family to 19 Associate Artists. This new creative initiative will build upon the indelible legacy of The Rep’s Acting Company and now will expand to include directors, writers, designers, musicians and actors. This group will help participate and advise in choosing plays The Rep produces as well as other initiatives. They will contribute to the work seen on all Rep stages, read scripts, engage in education projects, along with other duties as well as serve as advocates for The Rep in their home communities across the nation. The Rep has long been committed to a core group of artists and this new ensemble will continue The Rep’s commitment to giving voice to a broad spectrum of cultural, educational and community experiences that serve and reflect the diversity of perspectives found in this region.

November, 2012

Dear Friends,

Once again all of us at The Rep are delighted to thank the Patty and Jay Baker Foundation for their generosity and commitment to the children of our community. Milwaukee Repertory Theater’s annual production of Charles Dickens’ classic has become a holiday tradition for families in Milwaukee. Now celebrating its 37th anniversary, A Christmas Carol has brought joy to thousands of children and adults every holiday season. Because of the Tiny Tim Ticket program, we are happy to be able to provide tickets to those who otherwise would not have had the opportunity to enjoy this Yuletide classic.

Our warm thanks to the Bakers for their generous holiday gift to our community.

Happy Holidays!

A Christmas Carol – 25

A M E S S AG E F ROM T H E A R T I S T IC DI R E C T OR

It is with great good cheer that I welcome you to Milwaukee Repertory Theater’s production of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, and with even greater eagerness that I look forward to sharing with you Dickens’ vital and timeless message of benevolence and kindness toward our fellow human beings.

This year’s production marks the 37th installment of The Rep’s telling of this spectacular and relevant holiday tale, making ours the second-longest continuously-running Carol in America! When I assumed the role of Milwaukee Rep Artistic Director in 2010, I was immediately struck by many impressive aspects of the organization – not the least of which was the passion and dedication with which the staff approached this production each season, and how deeply the staff and Board of Trustees valued the tradition that The Rep’s Carol had become. And in the ensuing months, I’ve learned the deep appreciation that our audience and Milwaukee have for that very same tradition. I’ve heard the stories of families who center their own holiday celebrations around the play year after year. I’ve heard the stories of audience members or members of the children’s cast who have been inspired by the experience to go on to forge productive careers as theater practitioners themselves. And I’ve heard the stories of how children who attended the show with their parents now bring their own children to experience the fundamentally human lessons of Scrooge’s reclamation. These stories warm my heart very much, indeed, and serve as an annual reminder to us all of the very real present-day impacts of this “old” story quickly approaching its bicentennial.

This year’s production marks a new era for our Carol, now – after more than a dozen seasons of careful and loving direction from former Artistic Director Joe Hanreddy, former Associate Artistic Director Edward Morgan, and former Production Stage Manager and Production Manager Judy Berdan – moving forward in the capable hands of my good friend and colleague, director Aaron Posner, who has brought to us in recent seasons the excellent My Name is Asher Lev (in our Stiemke Studio), and last season’s well-loved To Kill a Mockingbird (in our Quadracci Powerhouse). I’m so pleased that Aaron has agreed to tell our treasured tale of redemption and rebirth, and to move it into the next stage of its life here at The Rep with his customary attention to detail, flair for visual storytelling, and great, warm heart.

And we’re thrilled, as always, to once again be mounting the production in the glorious Pabst Theater, which has housed our Carol for each of those 37 productions – a home every bit as grand and majestic as the story itself. We’re very grateful to Pabst Theater Corporation Executive Director Gary Witt and the entire Pabst staff for creating such an inviting holiday home for us, and for each of you, in which to enjoy this timeless tale.

I hope that you enjoy this year’s production, and that the story of Scrooge reminds you of the value of your (to borrow a phrase from Mr. Dickens), fellow travelers – be they friends, family, or strangers – as we move through this season with good cheer and a kind word for all of our fellows.

Happy Holidays!

The ensemble cast of A Christmas Carol is composed of actors from The Rep’s Artistic Intern Company. The Rep draws actors, directors and dramaturgs from a pool of some of the finest emerging and mid-professional theater artists found at a wide variety of training programs and theaters nationwide. Artistic Interns generally spend an entire season with The Rep and form a large part of the core of The Rep’s artistic production staff. The Artistic Intern Company allows The Rep to mount ambitious and engaging productions in an economically feasible manner, while at the same time nurturing and assisting in the development of the next generation of American theater artists. Directing Interns serve as Assistant Directors for mainstage productions and Acting Interns, in addition to serving as the ensemble company in larger productions, understudy all roles in the Quadracci Powerhouse and Stiemke Studio and A Christmas Carol, as well as playing small principal roles of their own throughout the season. In MemoriamBeloved, long-time Milwaukee Rep staff member Rey Dobeck died unexpectedly this July at his home in Shorewood. Rey was a First Hand in The Rep’s Costume Shop for over 20 years and was the Rep Company Member of the Year during the 2003/04 Season. His dedication, dry sense of humor and commitment to his craft and to The Rep will be sorely missed.

Rey was especially devoted to nurturing The Rep’s Intern Company – young actors, technicians and directors who come to The Rep to hone their craft and gain important experience working alongside professionals. Rey started a wonderful holiday tradition over ten years ago. Each year during the run of A Christmas Carol, Rey, along with other members of the Costume Shop, would sew stunning hand-made Christmas stockings from leftover pieces of fabric from Rep costumes to give to the interns. The stockings would be stuffed with an assortment of food and other goodies donated by the entire Rep family. Rey knew that these hand-made stockings were a treasured gift for each intern and a wonderful memento of their time at The Rep. He took great delight in distributing the stockings to the interns each year at The Rep’s Tree-Trimming party.

An active volunteer with The Friends of The Rep, Rey won the Outstanding Volunteer of the Year Award from the Friends in 2005. Each year he provided the lovely hand-sewn quilts that were part of The Friend’s Annual Raffle. In addition to being a costumer and designer, Rey was a talented jewelry maker as well as a performer who worked locally at Sunset Playhouse and The Fest City Singers.

A beautiful memorial service was held for Rey in July. Friends, family, co-workers and the Milwaukee theater community gathered to share their condolences with his partner, John Luedtke, and Rey’s family. As Rep Company Manager Dawn Ross said about Rey, “He was one of the biggest flirts I knew. Rey told every woman how beautiful she was and made them feel like the prettiest girl in the room!” Everyone who knew Rey, the entire Rep family from Trustees, Donors to Housekeeping and the Cabaret wait staff, will miss his wonderful creative talents, sparkling personality and zest for life.

Rey has been sorely missed this holiday season, but we are happy to report that the intern Christmas stocking tradition will continue in his honor. We miss you, Rey!

La Causa, Inc. was founded in response to a community need, and has been serving the Milwaukee community for 40 years. Founded as a day care center for 19 children in 1972, La Causa has developed into a multifaceted organization serving children and families in the areas of education, social services and abuse prevention. Their programs focus on serving Milwaukee’s neediest and most vulnerable children and families.

La Causa’s mission is to provide Milwaukee’s children, youth and families with quality, comprehensive services to nurture healthy family life and enhance community stability. The vast majority of individuals served in their programs come from low income families or those living below the poverty line. Every day is a struggle for their clients; many are in entry-level, minimum-wage jobs, have limited job skills or are limited-English speakers.

La Causa believes that family stability and an excellent education allow for maximum personal development and positive community development. Each year, nearly 6,000 individuals from throughout Milwaukee County are served by La Causa’s five divisions.

Their Early Education & Care Center provides child care, preschool and early education for children age 4 weeks to 12 years, including Enhanced Childcare Head Start Option (ECHO), K4 and K5, before- and after-school care and a summer program.

The Crisis Nursery & Respite Center is a licensed 12-bed emergency shelter and is open 24 hours a day, 365 days per year. The shelter accepts children from birth to 12-year-olds on a drop-in basis for up to

72 hours when parents face homelessness or domestic violence, need time to seek medical care or treatment, or must address family emergencies. It serves as a safe haven to keep children out of harm’s way during times of family crisis and provides all basic needs for children, many of whom arrive without personal belongings.

La Causa Charter School is a K4 through 8th grade school focusing on fine arts and vocational education. In addition to core curriculum, instruction includes vocal and instrumental music, dance, visual arts, engineering, robotics, aquaponics, video production and computer-aided design. Classes include support for English-language learners as well as instruction in Spanish. Two-thirds of incoming kindergarteners speak only Spanish; English-language proficiency is a priority in the school.

The Community Enrichment Center is a stately former residence that has been repurposed for community programming. The center is home to a new peer counseling mental health initiative and a program for teens about healthy life choices. The vision for this location is to become a full service facility to assist with family needs for all generations.

Their Social Services division provides a wide array of services including support for foster parents, Wraparound and REACH services for youth, behavioral therapy, coordination of treatment services, case management, support for delinquent youth and crisis stabilization.

Your generous donations will directly impact families in need and will help support education and family stability. Please visit www.lacausa.org for more information about La Causa.
