Hello! Having lived in Milwaukee for three years now, I have quickly learned that this city certainly knows how to make the most of its all too short summers. In addition to the numerous great outdoor and lakefront activities, Milwaukee’s celebrated music scene also hosts Summerfest,

the world’s largest music festival presenting local, national, and internationally recognized music superstars for two gloriously packed weeks in June and July. So what better way to really get you in the mood for this great local event, than by sharing with you a rock performance extraordinaire that has been taking the country by storm recently? One Night With Janis Joplin celebrates the music of legendary rock icon and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame artist, Janis Joplin, right here on The Rep’s Quadracci Powerhouse stage.

Last summer, I attended the opening night of this really fun production’s tryout at Cleveland Play House. I had a great time watching a cross-generational audience – many of whom were reliving seminal moments of their distant youth – by rocking out to classics such as “Piece of My Heart,” “Cry Baby,” “Mercedes Benz,” and many, many more. I was delighted when Milwaukee Rep was asked by producers Todd Gershwin and Daniel Chilewich to be part of a consortium of three nationally recognized producing theaters to co-produce the next round of this entertaining show’s life. For three years now, I have very much wanted to extend the Quadracci Powerhouse producing season beyond late April. We are delighted to finally have the capability to do that now, at the end of our current season, by sharing in the creation of this production, written and directed by Randy Johnson, along with Pasadena Playhouse and Arena Stage.

This summer also brings another exciting change to The Rep. I am thrilled to welcome Chad Bauman as our incoming Managing Director, who will join me as a co-leader of our company. Chad is a rising star in the theater world, and joins us after six seasons with Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater in Washington, D.C. I very much look forward to working with him on our recently announced 2013/14 Season. We will continue to deliver brave, challenging, entertaining and vital works to our three stages, as well as at the beautiful Pabst Theater. In these days where fame is instant and true musicianship rare, the word “artist” is an often-misused statement. As we are held hostage to a manufactured pop culture on a daily basis, I feel we must constantly revisit our history and explore the authentic forces that have shaped the landscape of our lives. One of these authentic forces is Janis Joplin. There never has been and never will be

another Janis Joplin. Her fame was earned – her following grew as she grew – people were drawn to her and she was drawn to them. Janis Joplin was a true artist without contrivance or artifice. She was an extraordinary woman. People like to say “ahead of her time.” I happen to believe she was right on time. After immersing myself in the culture of Janis Joplin with Michael Joplin, Laura Joplin and Janis herself, the one prevailing message that kept coming back to me was the commonality of the paths and influences that guide and shape all of us and our spirit every day.

I am constantly astonished and inspired by the depth of the wisdom she imparted in her music, her interviews, her writings and her art. All of us are influenced and shaped by artists, poets, musicians, thinkers and ordinary people. That’s what creates new thought every day. Janis provoked a lot of thought by simply being herself. At 3 a.m., one week after I had spent time with the Joplin family, I knew that this play would simply be One Night With Janis Joplin. It’s a night where Janis (one more time) could share her music, truths, influences, art, philosophy and spirit. Janis lives on as most great artists eventually do, forever in the conscious collective. This isn’t just Janis’ story: it’s all of our stories in one way or another. We all touch and inform each other as we travel this life. I trust that you, the audience, will take away with you a piece of Janis’ heart.

The world is a better place because she was here for a moment.

One Night Productions, LLC (Commercial Producer) is a subsidiary of Premiere Media, LLC, a New York-based entertainment production company managed by Todd Gershwin and Daniel Chilewich. One Night Productions was established as the commercial production company for the new touring production of One Night With Janis Joplin. The Pasadena Playhouse (Producer), under the leadership of Artistic Director Sheldon Epps and Executive Director Elizabeth Doran, has been in existence since 1917. Sabrina Elayne Carten, Blues Singer

Sabrina Elayne Carten began her career with Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra

as the Strawberry Woman in Porgy and Bess, and has performed the opera at notable opera houses around the world. Her portrayal of Maria in Porgy and Bess is considered to be one of the best. She played Tituba in The Crucible at Chautauqua Opera and Mobile Opera. She understudied and performed as Queenie in Hal Prince’s Show Boat on its first national tour across the U.S. and Canada. She recently appeared with Mike Tyson in Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. She is a member of The American Spiritual Ensemble. Having performed in the Portland Center Stage world premiere, she is excited to reprise the role of the Blues Singer in One Night With Janis Joplin.

Mary Bridget Davies starred as Janis Joplin in the national tour of Love, Janis and was

Other favorite credits include the Broadway show It Ain’t Nothin’ But the Blues, Reno Sweeney in Anything Goes and being a member of Something Dada Improvisational Comedy Co. Shay Saint-Victor is honored to join the cast of One Night With Janis Joplin.

Recently she toured singing gospel with the Change Experience. Theater credits include Freeda in Freeda Peoples (Billie Holiday Theatre) and Angel in A Garfield Christmas (tour). Kimberly Yarbrough, Joplinaire/Blues Singer AlternateA veteran actress originally from Memphis, TN, Kim Yarbrough captivated TV

audiences the world over during Season Two of NBC’s The Voice. She has been a native Angeleno since 2000, enjoying a dream career performing alongside icons such as Dennis Quaid, Danny DeVito, Loretta Devine, Jim Belushi,

Katey Sagal, Kenny Loggins, Tyler Perry, Della Reese and Stevie Wonder. Major TV credits include: Southland, 2 Broke Girls, Vegas, Bones, and recurring appearances on Dexter and Conan. Kim’s vocals are regularly featured on the hit FX show, Sons of Anarchy. Major stage credits include Ain’t Misbehavin’, Once on This Island, the original cast of Nuncrackers and The Women of Brewster Place, for which she won an L.A. Ross Seligman, Music Supervisor/Guitar

Ross Seligman returns to One Night With Janis Joplin after performing in

the show at Portland Center Stage (world premiere), Cleveland Play House, Arena Stage in Washington, D.C. and Pasadena Playhouse. Regional theater credits include: Portland Center Stage productions of Bat Boy: The Musical, The Fantasticks, West Side Story, Cabaret and It Ain’t Nothin’ But the Blues; with Broadway Rose Theatre Company: Jekyll & Hyde, They’re Playing Our Song and Chicago and with Artists Repertory Theatre: Susannah Mars’ Mars on Life. In addition to music directing and composing music for national commercials, Ross Seligman has just released his new record, Run with Me, with symphonic rock group Echo Helstrom. Run with Me is available on iTunes, Spotify and everywhere else online. He currently lives in New York City.

Stephen Flakus, Guitar

Stephen is even more jazzed than before about returning to the stage with One Night With Janis Joplin. Having been with the production since Portland, he is eternally grateful to have the opportunity to continue with such a fun, magical production. A native of Oregon, Stephen grew up in Jacksonville, FL, where he attended the University of North Florida and earned a BA in Classical Guitar. Recent credits include: One Night With Janis Joplin at Cleveland Play House, Arena Stage and Pasadena Playhouse; Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and Pump Boys and Dinettes (Jim) at Broadway Rose Theatre Company in Portland, OR. Stephen lives in Portland where he gigs, teaches and records with his band the Someday Tricycle. He would like to thank Randy Johnson, Dan Chilewich, Todd Gershwin and, of course, the Joplin family for providing the chance to recreate such an amazing experience every night.

Patrick Harry, Bass

Patrick Harry was the bassist for One Night With Janis Joplin at Portland Center Stage (world premiere), Cleveland Play House, Arena Stage and Pasadena Playhouse. Most of Harry’s work is as a freelance bassist in Portland, OR. Portland credits include: The Wild Party, Eating Raoul and Spring Awakening (Live On Stage); Annie, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and Richard Scarry’s Busytown (Northwest Children’s Theater); ’69: the sexual revolution musical (Triangle Productions); Always . . . Patsy Cline and The Winter Wonderettes (Broadway Rose Theatre Company) and numerous other local shows.

Tyler Evans, Keyboard

Tyler Evans is thrilled to return to One Night With Janis Joplin after its debut at Portland Center Stage and success at Cleveland Play House, Arena Stage in Washington, D.C. and Pasadena Playhouse. He has music-directed and performed in various Portland productions including: Spring Awakening (Live On Stage); West Side Story, Cabaret, Sunset Boulevard, Oklahoma! (Portland Center Stage) and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (Broadway Rose Theatre Company). He is a Washington State University Master’s alum.

Mitch Wilson, Drums

Mitch Wilson is pumped to be back with the crew – it was just about a two years ago that One Night With Janis Joplin debuted at Portland Center Stage. A drummer and singer/songwriter, Wilson currently lives in Los Angeles

where he’s worked with The Pretty Reckless, featuring Taylor Momsen; Bernard “Pretty” Purdie; Adam Holzman; David Sonenberg and Senri Oe, among others. Drumming in orchestras, Wilson’s theater credits include White Christmas, Annie, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Grease. Most recently, he was the drummer for Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth, as well as for The Hugs rock band. Wilson currently plays with Kid Confidence.

Blair Bielawski, Saxophone

Blair Bielawski has an extensive and varied background in education and performance. He holds a BA in Music Education from Carroll University, (Waukesha, WI, 1981), and an MA from the University of Wisconsin, (Madison, WI, 1984). He taught for 12 years at a variety of grade levels. Blair is currently an author and part of the advisory group for Lorenz Educational Press as well as an author and composer for Heritage Music Press. Before joining Lorenz, he was a member of the Hal Leonard Corporation’s editorial and arranging staff for 17 years, working on all aspects of the music catalog.

Greg Garcia, Trumpet

Greg attended the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where he studied with Wayne Cook and Dennis Najoom and was a member of the Symphony Band, Wind Ensemble and was lead trumpet in the Jazz Ensemble. Greg has been teaching at the Waukesha County Conservatory of Music since 1996, where he maintains a studio of about 30 private students. Greg is also a member of the faculty at the Wisconsin Conservatory

of Music. He is a member of the bands Hot Sauce (Rock, Funk, R&B), D’Calleson (Salsa) and The Groove Hogs, a blues band with whom he has performed all across the U.S. and recorded the CD Blue Rhythms, White Lies. Greg has been the featured soloist with several local youth orchestras and bands. In addition, Greg has written and performed music for a number of television and radio commercials.

Brett Murphey, Trumpet

Brett is the lead trumpet player for the All-Star SUPERband, with whom he has been playing since early 2000. He is originally from Des Moines, IA and earned his BM and MM in Studio Music and Jazz/Jazz

Pedagogy at the University of Miami in 1984. For five years, he studied trumpet with Gilbert Johnson, who played principal trumpet in the Philadelphia Orchestra for 25 years. Brett has recorded, toured and/or performed with Frank Sinatra, Barbara Streisand, The Bee Gees, KC and the Sunshine Band and Dionne Warwick, among many others. He has also played lead trumpet for over 45 different touring Broadway productions including The King and I, The Pirates of Penzance, Camelot, Cabaret, Nine and Oklahoma!, to name a few. Brett can be heard on many albums, including Barbara Streisand’s Guilty, Dionne Warwick’s Heartbreaker and The Bee Gees’ Living Eyes.

Randy Johnson, Writer/Director

Randy Johnson is a graduate of the USC School of Theatre in Los Angeles. For over

three decades he has produced, directed or written some of the most groundbreaking and landmark events on the world stage. Most recently, he conceived, wrote and directed One Night With Janis Joplin, which premiered May 2011 at Portland Center Stage to rave reviews and was an immediate sell out. The production was presented in association with the Estate of Janis Joplin. At the Savoy Theatre, Randy directed and staged Songs My Mother Taught Me starring Lorna Luft. Randy also conceived and directed main stage productions aboard two ships on Celebrity Cruise Lines; directed and choreographed Paige O’Hara’s nightclub act; staged and directed Tammy Wynette’s final tour; and directed and co-produced Commitment to Life, which raised over 35 million dollars for AIDS Project Los Angeles. Randy also directed the grand opening of Universal Studios’ Islands of Adventure, for executive producer Steven Spielberg. Other notable directing projects include: former President Ronald Reagan’s 80th birthday celebration; the Economic Summit of Industrialized Nations; Tennessee’s bicentennial celebration, hosted by former Vice President Al Gore; the California Governor’s Awards for the Arts; and Horizons, the grand opening of GM Place in Vancouver, Canada. Randy is a recipient of a Crystal Apple Award for his work with Aids Project Los Angeles, was named Volunteer of the Year for his work with L.A. Jeff Cone, Costume Designer

Jeff Cone has been designing costumes for more than 30 years. He worked at Atlanta’s Alliance Theatre for 12 seasons, followed by a five-year stint at Seattle Opera. For the last 15 years, he has been in Portland, OR, at Portland Center Stage. In that time, he has designed costumes for 60 productions. Of those shows, 38 have been in the last five seasons at the Gerding Theater at the Armory. Favorite productions include West Side Story, Cabaret, Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Sometimes a Great Notion, Snow Falling on Cedars and, of course, One Night With Janis Joplin. Jeff has received Portland Theater Community and Critics Awards (“Drammy”) for his costume designs for Dirty Blonde, Act A Lady and Shakespeare’s Amazing Cymbeline. Hethyr (Red) Verhoef, Production Stage Manager

A native Angeleno, Hethyr has always been entranced by the power of art and all the elements it takes to create it. She adores being a spec of the whole. She has worked on numerous productions over the years gaining beauty and experience from each one. Hethyr also has many years experience as lead fly man and deck head. Deaf or Hard of Hearing Services: The Quadracci Powerhouse (QP) and the Stiemke Studio are equipped with an infrared listening system which ensures clarity of sound from any seat in the house. Performances are offered in American Sign Language for a Thursday evening of all QP productions and one Sunday matinee for all Stiemke Studio productions. We also offer a Captioned Theater performance during the second to last Sunday matinee performance of all QP productions. Please call The Rep Ticket Office at 414-224-9490 for more information. Script synopses are available upon request for QP and Stiemke Studio productions by calling 414-224-1761.

Blind or Low Vision Services: Large print programs are available in the Quadracci Powerhouse and Stiemke Studio from any usher. Every Rep production has one audio-described performance.
