However, knowing that you will

receive a participation trophy can

make you less competitive and

satisfied with not doing your best.

A parent, teacher or coach, always

wants a child to be motivated and

successful.

In conclusion, there is no benefit

of participation trophies for youth

sports in today’s world. Participa-

tion trophies are harmful to youth

by sending the wrong message.

These trophies make kids believe

they are all winners for just show-

ing up, they can be costly, and

demotivate kids from doing there

best. In fact, not giving participa-

tion trophies will motivate them to

earn a well-deserved trophy and to

be successful later in life when it

really matters. Don’t waste money

on meaningless awards.

Nick Damiano

Hit a homerun, strikeout, make the

winning shot, or drop the winning

catch...It doesn’t matter; you will still

receive a trophy. Today’s parents and

coaches are praising kids by rewarding

them with a participation trophy for

just showing up or even being regis-

tered to play. Winning or losing a

game, trying your best, or being dedi-

cated is irrelevant in today’s youth

sports. Participation trophies send the

message to kids that they are all win-

ners, the trophies can be costly; and

they can also demotivate kids from

being the best they can be. Given

these points, there is no benefit of

participation trophies for youth sports

in today’s world.

Participation trophies can convey a

bad message to kids that they are all

winners. In true competition, only one

team or one player can be the winner.

When everyone receives a trophy in a

youth sports league, it makes the real

winner’s trophy less valuable. Partici-

pation trophies become dust collectors

on your shelf and cast a shadow on any

well-deserved trophies. Furthermore,

kids will begin to expect awards for

just showing up to school or a job; this

is not reality.

Trophies and awards can be very

costly to an organization. Participation

trophies are a poor use of money by a

youth sports league that has to fund-

raise to survive. Not to mention, some

organizations are very large. It is more

logical to spend money on educating

and training coaches so that all the kids

will benefit. Additionally, uniforms

and equipment would also be a better

use of funding than a participation

trophy.

Handing out participation trophies

to everyone can demotivate kids from

being the best they can be and settling

for last place. One might say that these

are completely harmless and give kids

a sense of accomplishment while moti-

vating them to do their best.

Beauty and the Beast

The Disney remake of its

original movie “Beauty

and the Beast” has come

to theaters near you. The

movie aired in theaters

across the world on

March 17th, 2017. Just

on that day alone, the

movie made $63,777,443.

This movie was a target

for many age groups.

Most of the audiences

were fans of the original

movie that was released

in 1991. There were also

young children and par-

ents that went to see the

movie. The movie was a

great success and

earned $459,833,200 to

date. Emma Watson,

who played Belle, took

on a different role from

what her acting career

has been. Most known

for Hermione from the

“Harry Potter” series,

Watson has made many

appearances, but none

quite like this one. No

one knew Watson can

sing until this movie was

released. People were

skeptical at first, but

found she did an amaz-

ing job. There was no

doubt this movie was

going to be viewed by

millions across the world.

The movie made huge

success and exceeded

many of people’s expec-

tations. There are more

Disney remakes of origi-

nal movies coming soon

and after this, our expec-

tations for them are high.

What advice would you give to the 8th grade students

going into high school?

Mrs. Leitner:

“Keep an open mind and be willing to take on all of the challenges high school has to

offer.” “Keep your head on straight and get involved.” “Make new friends, but remember to keep

the old ones.” “Say no to temptations and yes to success.”

Ms. Zalenski:

“Put more effort into your work and don’t give up.” “If you feel intimidated by others, put

more effort into it.” “If you feel overwhelmed by your classes, ask for help.”

Mrs. Bet:

“ Don’t let others hold you back from what you really want to do, but always challenge

yourself to do better than you have done before.”

Ms. Kozlek:

“Continue to work hard.” “Always remember that what goes on social media, stays there

forever.” “There’s a great, big world out there; make it your own.”

Mrs. Lawrence:

“Get involved in as many clubs, groups, and things as you can.” “While you need to work

hard, you also need to enjoy your years in high school.” “Work hard, play hard!”

Ms. Keich:

“Never be afraid to fail.” “ Try out and talk to new people.”

“How can we expect

righteousnouess to

prevail when there is

hardly anyone will-

ing to give himself

up individually to a

righteous cause.

Such a fine, sunny

day, and I have to go,

but what does my

death matter, if

through us thou-

sands of people are

awakened and stirred

to action?”

On February 16th, the 8th grade members of McAdoo Mustangs Girls’ and Boys’ Basketball teams along

with the cheerleaders celebrated their Homecoming. After the first game, the boys’ team presented a video to

Gavin Penkala. Gavin is a 1st grade student in Ms. Quigley’s class. In February, Gavin was diagnosed with a rare

type of cancer, called Rhabdomyosarcoma. Currently the 7 year old is undergoing chemotherapy and radiation

at the Janet Weiss Children’s Hospital. The boys’ and girls’ basketball teams, along with the cheerleaders, gave

Gavin a donation. Gavin was also made an honorary member of the MKEMS Boys’ Basketball team. They shared

the video on Facebook and on March 10th the entire school showed their Mustang Pride and support for Gavin.

Everyone wore either a MKEMS or yellow t-shirt as long as they gave a $1.00 donation. All of the money raised

went to help Gavin and his family during this difficult time. You can follow Gavin’s progress and any other fund-

raisers for him on the Facebook page “Shouts Out to Gavin”. Gavin is a true “Mustang” and is battling this dis-

ease like a champ! Stay strong Gavin!

Is Flex Helpful?

P A G E 3 V O L U M E 2 , I S S U E 2

Flex is an intervention peri-

od where the teachers pre-

pare the students for the

PSSA’s. To me, flex seems

like a great idea to help stu-

dents get ready for the pres-

sures of the standardized

tests. I’ve interviewed a

teacher and a student to get

a perspective of both sides

of the school.

My teacher, Mr. Gavlick

said “Although flex is a

good idea, it’s hard to find

motivation for the stu-

dents.” I also interviewed a

7th grader, Stephanie Sten-

son, and asked her the same

question. She replied “Flex

helps us challenge ourselves

to be a better us.” Mr.

Gavlick made a great point

“it is very hard to find moti-

vation for the students.”

There are solutions; the

teachers and faculty have

been trying to find us an

incentive that everyone can

enjoy. Teachers are also

asking students to pitch ide-

as for an incentive. So, if

you have an idea, feel free

to tell any of your teachers.
