UNIVERSITY OF ZULULAND VISITED THE

MKI

During registration at the MKI Westville

(Lakeside) offices

The University of Zululand’s (UNIZULU’s)

Business Management Society comprising of 62

students and 2 staff members visited the Moses

Kotane Institute (MKI) offices in Westville and

Springfield, Durban, on the 19th of June 2019. MKI

and UNIZULU have a relationship that seeks to

fulfil the mandates of both these organisations,

particularly, responding to the provincial economic

transformation.

The purpose of the tour was to expose the third

year and postgraduate students to the functioning

of MKI, recruitment drive, procedures, graduate

programs, internships, bursaries, and sharing of

any relevant information to the students.

Dr Thembinkosi Twalo our Skills Development

Research and Partnership Manager welcomed

UNIZULU at our head offices in Westville. Dr

Twalo addressed everyone, explaining our

mandate, vision and mission of MKI and how

UNIZULU come on board.

The visit was more of an educational tour as

students were afforded an opportunity to visit all

MKI’s operarional vanues, such as the research

laboratory and training centre.

THE MOSES KOTANE INSTITUTE ENSURES

THAT SHARKS BOARD SEAMEN HAVE THE

SKILL THEY NEED IN THE SEA

Sharks Board Seamen during the MKI assessment in

The Moses Kotane Institute trained sixty Sharks

Board Seamen that net the sea every morning of

everyday, in the “Learn to Swim Programme”.

These employees use boats to complete their

work and those that were employed before, did not

have swimming skills. In case an accident

happens in the sea, they do not have the skills to

save themselves.

This programme commenced on the 10th of March

2019 at the upper South Coast and lower South

Coast of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). Lower South

Coast consist of four base and thirty employees

and upper South Coast consist of three base and

thirty employees as well.

The first assessment was conducted at Ilovu

swimming pool on the 20th of June 2019 and the

second one was conducted on the 24th of June

2019. Seamen are very happy with these

swimming skills and instructors from MKI are also

very happy with the performance shown by the

Seamen.

Alex Ndlovu, one of the Seaman said, as much as

they are happy with the progress they have

achieved, they would like to have a second set of

training or seasonal trainings, to ensure they

always up to speed.

The MUT Vice-Chancellor, Dr Enoch Duma Malaza said

that as MUT they are happy to be chosen to be part of

this entity that have a vision of internationally

recognised research and innovation. He further said

that as MUT they think very carefully who to work

with. Dr Malaza also said that even though they

currently do not have enough capacity, they are

however considering developing a curriculum that will

offer as Maritime Studies.

The event was closed off by Prof Busi Nkonki-Mandleni

from MUT by saying, “we would like to extend our

thankfulness to MKI to see it fit to come and partner

with MUT, we really appreciate it and we are humbled

by the MKI’s initiative. To our VC Dr Enoch Malaza, I

would like to thank you for sharing your version with

us and for your uncompromised leadership. Dr

Malaza’s vision is to see Umlazi township transform

because of MUT”

The Moses Kotane Institute (MKI) is in a quest for

Innovation and partnering with institutions of higher

learning that will assist the Institute to be a key driver

of innovation within the province of MKI KwaZulu-

Natal (KZN). MKI and Mangosuthu University of

Technology (MUT) signed a Memorandum of

Understanding (MoU) on the 21st of June 2019 which

will see the two organisations working together in

attempt of encouraging economic transformation

particularly in Rural and Township areas. “We really

appreciate how we were received by MUT, going

forward the two organisations will work towards

creating an enable environment for innovative ideas,

and to also allow Entrepreneurs to drive innovation

and prosper,” says Ms Mbali Myeni, MKI Board Deputy

Chairperson. She further outlined that this

partnership will strive to create more jobs and

entrepreneurial opportunities that will address the

economic challenges of the province.

The event of sealing the deal between MKI and MUT

was opened by Prof Nokwethemba Ndlazi from MUT.

Prof Ndlazi said that she is very happy about this

relationship between the two institutions because

MUT focuses on many sectors that MKI also focuses

on, sectors such as ICT.

Ms Mbali Myeni, the MKI Board Deputy Chairperson

said that, this partnership is part our values and part
