Suggested and/or example answers from the exercises
MLA 8th Edition emphasizes that students should use logic when including the core elements of any
source, therefore there is more flexibility with citations and their answers may differ,
which is OK.
To compile this resource, I consulted the following resources:
MLA Handbook: Eighth Edition. Modern Language Association of America, 2016.
MLA.org
EasyBib.com
I created the citations and have permission to use, reference, and link to the sources from the appropriate parties. You may use them for educational purposes only.
Thank you.

* Answer Key * Comprehension Check “What is MLA Style? And why do I need to use it?”1. List at least three reasons why writers document their sources: Answers may include: to establish credibility
on the topic, to ensure research on the topic has been done, to show respect for other writers and creators, to enable the reader to further investigate the topic, and to maintain academic integrity by not plagiarizing others’ ideas and work.
2. What are the three areas for documenting sources and formatting a paper that using MLA style covers? 1. Attributions within the paper2. Works-cited page (bibliography).3. Style for typing the paper.
3. The first two “core elements” of a source answer the questions: Who? (author) and What? (title)
4. What is a “container” in the core elements? A container is the host of the source.
5. Give an example of a “container”: Answers may vary; Example containers may include: Netflix (hosting a movie or documentary), YouTube (hosting a video), Gale (hosting an article or video), an anthology (collection of stories or poems), etc.
6. In a print source (such as a magazine or book), what would you include for the “location”? Page numbers.
7. Give an example of the location for a website: (Any url, so answers will vary) Example: www.mla.org/MLA-Style
In-Text Citations: Signal phrases1. Answers will vary. An example is:! According to Dave Johnson, writer for Time.com, “…a tweet’s limit of 140 characters makes it difficult to
compose a message at a higher reading level.”
2. Answers will vary. Examples:! Johnson contends that politicians tend to have higher reading levels for tweets because they tend to use
more multisyllabic words.or! Politicians tend to have higher reading levels for tweets because they tend to use more multisyllabic words
says Johnson in “How Smart Are Your Tweets?”
3. Answers will vary. An example is:! Eliana Dockterman explains in “Why Marvel Decided to Create an All-Female Superhero Team” that the A-
Force is not the first all-female line of books for Marvel. In addition, she says readers are beginning to embrace the fact that females are just as worthy of the spotlight as their male counterparts.

In-Text Citations: Parenthetical References1. Answers will vary. An example is:
“The book is essentially a sequel to To Kill a Mockingbird but was technically written first,” said Jacqueline Sahagian in “Why Fans Shouldn’t Read Harper Lee’s New Book” (1).
2. Answers will vary. An example is:Sahagian wonders if Harper Lee, who is extremely private, had many tales she could have divulged to her audience but chose not to, or if her single masterpiece was all she had to give to the world (3).
3. “Seventy-two percent of teachers reported feeling moderate to extreme pressure from school and district administrators to improve test scores” (“What Makes Testing Toxic?” 14).
4. “...it’s exciting to hear that this beloved author is releasing new writing about the characters millions of readers have come to know and love” (Sahagian 2).
! *Students may wish to include a signal phrase, as well. If they mention the author’s name, only the page number is necessary in the parenthetical citation.

NOTE: Symbols such as @ and # should be ignored, alphabetizing instead by the first letter of the name, handle, or title. The words A, An, and The are also ignored, using the second word in the title to alphabetize. In the case of “@themuseumofmodernart,” some may alphabetize by the “M” using the rule of ignoring the word “The.” This exact case has not been addressed by the MLA; however, I tend to believe that because this is considered a handle (or pseudonym), the rule doesn’t apply. But I could very well be wrong. So an alternative answer, that I would accept, is:
