Mountain Lakes High School Summer Academy

The Mountain Lakes SchoolDistrict promotes a supportive

learning environment where every

student is challenged, inspired, and

empowered to cultivate the intellectual

curiosity, skills, and knowledge

needed to contribute as a responsible

and productive citizen of the global

community. That is why we are proud

to be expanding our academic

program with a summer session, the

Mountain Lakes High School

Summer Academy , that offers

students the opportunity to enroll in

advance credit, preview and

enrichment courses. For the 2012

summer session, the majority of our

classes, led by members of our

talented faculty, will return to our

newly air-conditioned MLHS campus.

Advance credit courses are forstudents seeking to accelerate their

academic program. Because these

courses are equivalent in rigor and

content to our full-year curriculum at

Mountain Lakes High School, students

can take advance credit courses for

credit at their respective schools. It is

recommended that prospective

students refer to their school’s policy

on credit transfers before registering.

Unless otherwise noted, advancecredit courses meet June 25 to August

3, four hours daily for 120 hours.

Students seeking an introduction

and academic support for a science,

math, world language, and/or

literature class they have enrolled in

for the fall should register for a

preview course. To best prepare the

students throughout the six-week

period, teachers will introduce themain concepts of each course and

provide opportunities for the students

to actively engage with the material.

These two-hour courses also provide

students with the flexibility to add

additional offerings to their summer

schedule. Preview courses meet June

25 to August 3, two hours daily for a

total of 60 hours.

Enrichment courses, including

study skills & the arts, are two-hourclasses offered on various dates

throughout our summer session.

Uniquely designed by our faculty,

these enrichment courses will allow

students to sharpen skills and explore

new interests. Please note the specific

course information & prices for each

of these classes in our summer

catalog.

This six-week, comprehensive class is designed to

give all students the building blocks of math that will

serve as a firm foundation for algebra and future math

courses. The presentation of the curriculum will

integrate their previous knowledge with new concepts

in the areas of number sense, geometry, algebra, data

analysis and problem solving. Specific topics include:

integers, patterns, graphs, probability, number theory,

fractions, percents, ratios, proportions, geometry, andan introduction to algebra. Students will leave each

class with new mathematical concepts, armed with a

variety of problem solving techniques, and able to

reason their way to valid conclusions.

 Algebra I / Grades 8 – 9

Time: Advance credit 8:05 am – 12:30 pm

Preview course 8:05 am – 10:10 am

Tuition: $1200 Advanced Credit $600 Preview

Prerequisite: Pre-algebra

This six-week course covers a range of algebraictopics that will appear in the NJ end-of-course

assessment. Students will explore the basic concepts

of algebraic skills through three key ideas: the equation

and inequality; data analysis and graphs; and the

translation of verbal situations into algebraic symbols.

Word problems and factoring are emphasized as are

methods of solving quadratic equations. Geometric

concepts, probability, and graph interpretation allow

for the application of the algebraic skills. Formulas,

function notation, graphing, the laws of exponents and

radicals, operations with polynomials, factoring, and

solving quadratic equations by factoring, writing

equations of lines, proportions and the quadratic

formula are some of the topics presented. The course

also calls on students to practice applying

mathematical ways of thinking to real world issues and

challenges.

Prerequisite: Algebra I

This six-week course covers the basic concepts of

plane, solid, coordinate, and some analytic geometry

while stressing deductive proof and reasoning.

Throughout the year the properties learned in algebra

are reintroduced during this course. The aims and

objectives of the course are to develop and show the

value of the logic of deductive reasoning and toimprove and increase the understanding and

application of the terminology, the symbolism, and the

structure of mathematics. Non-Euclidean geometries

such as fractal geometry and the Lenart sphere are

investigated. Some student projects will involve the

use of computer technology.

Preview course 8:05 am – 10:10 am

Tuition: $1200 Advanced Credit $600 Preview

Prerequisite: Geometry

This six-week course presents a rigorous and

enhanced study of the algebraic concepts introduced

in Algebra I. These concepts are extensively

augmented by the usage of graphing calculators. The

functions - namely the linear, quadratic, absolute value,

exponential, and logarithmic - are examined both

algebraically and graphically. Because of the emphasis

on the graphs of the aforementioned functions, the

graphing calculator is an integral part of this course.

Additional topics include the study of the higher-orderinequalities, the polynomial and rational functions, the

applications of linear and quadratic equations, systems

of equations and inequalities, matrix algebra, advanced

techniques for graphic functions, and probability. Only

advance credit students will cover Trigonometry.

Tuition: $1200 Advanced Credit $600 Preview

Prerequisite: Algebra II with Trigonometry

This six-week course is a study of analytic geometry,

advanced algebra, and trigonometry. More work isundertaken on the study of vector algebra and vector

equations, parametric equations, and rectangular

equations of lines and planes. Topics in advanced

algebra are studied including the binomial theorem,

mathematical induction, parametric equations, and

polar coordinates. Some emphasis is placed on the

study of limits in order to provide sufficient background

for the next course in calculus. The graphing calculator

is used extensively.

Calculus / Grades 11 – 12

Time: Advance credit 8:05 am – 12:30 pm

Tuition: $1200 Advanced Credit

Prerequisite: Pre-Calculus

The purpose of this six-week course course is to serve

as the first study of differential and integral calculus.

Much attention is given to the central ideas of

calculus such as the limit the slope of the tangent line,

the rate of change, and the area under a curve. At the

same time, students will deepen their knowledge and

understanding of a function and its utility inrepresenting and answering questions about real-world

phenomena. The course differs with AP Calculus

in both the depths of similar topics, as well as in the

range of the topics considered. In summary, Calculus

will enable and provide students with the opportunity

to explore the central topics and methods of calculus

while developing an awareness of, and appreciation

for, the historical origins and the cultural contributions

of the calculus.

Math Lab/ Grades 7-12

Time: 8:05 am -10:10 am or 10:25 am - 12:30 pm

Tuition: $110 per week (Offered each week)

Students are able to work at their own pace under

the supervision of a certified mathematics teacher.

Instruction is offered for mathematics course ranging
