Not a Seasonal Thing…

D ecember may be the busiest season for Filipinos because of

the Christmas season – the most awaited and celebrated holiday in the Philippines.

Coinciding the most-celebrated Christmas season are the busiest days for the Filipino ESL teachers as this month connotes the time when students flock the most in the Philippines. This could spell more tiring days for teachers as it can’t be denied that during the Winter vacation in Korea (December to February), Koreans come to the Philippines to learn English. This means more students to teach, more lessons to make, more reports to accomplish and more tests to prepare. And not to mention, more Christmas gifts to wrap.

This is definitely the season where we can be with Korean students most of the time. Let’s make the most out of it! As teachers, let us bring out the best in our teaching prowess. Let us remember that they came here to study and learn the English language. It is here in the Philippines where they chose to study. So might as well do our very best to meet their demands or our demands won’t be met either.

But let’s not focus on teaching alone. Let’s also befriend our students, treat them well, and consider them not just our students but also our family. When we do this, we are not only making their stay more meaningful but we are also giving them the reasons or shall I say the big reason to STAY or COME BACK.

Take it in the line of sales. Successful salesmen always say – “Making the people buy your product is not a good sale but making the people CONTINIUOUSLY buy your products is the good sale!” This saying is comparable to teaching in our field. It’s not the one-time experience that matters but it’s the long-time! If each one of us would make this simple goal possible, then we could keep our sales up! We could keep students intact, not just now but also in the future.

Since we are here in this field (teaching Koreans) – might as well make the best of our effort to enhance our craft. Teach hard and play less. But don’t just teach and teach, laugh and smile often in between. Touch your students’ hearts and they would love you in return. We owe them a part of our living, this is the bread and butter to some. So let’s pay them back by means of teaching well and being a good example to them.

Teaching passionately and being friendly at the same time is what they need. We can be their teachers, their friends and their inspiration. Let’s love and care for our students on a normal basis, not only in this season but at anytime possible, whenever POSSIBLE because being good to your students must not be a seasonal thing. It’s always a now-or-never kind of thing!

The Issue of Age: How Adult Learners Fair in Second Language Acquisition (Part 1) By: Ken Amante

T here has always been a comparison between children and adults in terms

of second language learning. We often conclude that children learn better by virtue of their age and that adults considerably lag because of this. While there is some truth in this notion, we certainly cannot overlook the proficiency of adult learners who excel in the language despite the age factor. Just take a look at some of your adult students and you know it’s never too late to learn a language. But how do they manage to acquire a language despite the hurdle that is age? Let’s take a look into this matter and learn how adults get through this obstacle. Before discussing how adult learners get at a language, let us examine first what literature has to say regarding age in relation to language learning. According to studies, those who start second languages as children usually reach higher levels of competence than those who start as adults (i.e. after age 15). This is with respect to ultimate attainment. However, research also claims that adults are faster, at least in early stages. What accounts for this faster rate in learning among adult learners? One factor could be that they are better at managing conversations. While younger acquirers receive simpler input, older acquirers are much more adept at controlling the input directed at them and making it comprehensible. They get the native speaker to modify the input. They know how to negotiate meaning whenever they find difficulty in understanding messages. With this advantage, the adolescent may actually receive more comprehensible input and this may be responsible for their greater speed of acquisition. Another factor that puts adult learners ahead in the race in the initial stage of

produce in the second language using structures that have not yet been acquired. They do this by using first language rules and relying on what Stephen Krashen calls the Monitor (a conscious internal system that checks the accuracy of one’s language either by intuition or by learned competence). The use of the first language plus the Monitor facilitates early production. It also invites input—the more one talks, the more others are drawn to talk to the person. Finally, the older acquirer’s rate superiority is due to his greater knowledge of the world. By relying on b a ckground i n f orma t ion and experience, input becomes easier to understand therefore leading to faster acquisition of the target language. With these three factors working together, the adult learner is assured of the chance of getting at a language despite claims that age stifles the ability to learn a second language. In the next issue, I shall be discussing the advantages of learning a second language at a younger age. I will be using the same lens in discussing this topic. I will heavily rely on Stephen Krashen’s Input Hypothesis to elucidate this topic.

A s society becomes more competitive, Korea has also

become crazy about education. Although Korean government heavily invests in education, the investment is not efficient. First, education system is not creative and active. Most teachers give a one-sided lecture. They just read textbooks and write down contents about the class on the board unilaterally. Most students just sit on chairs and listen to the lectures. They’re easily bored with this method.

Second, the goal of education is just to pass exams and get high scores rather than improve students’ abilities and learning skills. Because of this, most students focus only on their exams. Most teachers don’t teach practical ways, and they force students to memorize things about exams. Consequently, students are stressed out in the exams.

Third, government’s education system is changed very often. Whenever the president is changed, the system has also been changed. Since it is changed frequently, most students and parents are very confused.

By: Eric (Yang Choong Hun)

Students must not only care about studying but also pay attention to new education system. They must study hard but it is difficult for them to concentrate on studying only. Frequent changes in educational system give bigger burdens to students.

For those problems, many people don’t trust the education system. To trust the system and improve the quality of education, I think the Korean government has to make the system more creative and active as well as improve students’ practical abilities. In addition, the government must not change it frequently to prevent confusion.

In conclusion, the government should study the system carefully and develop it to be able to help students in a practical way.

T he world economy is getting worse now so some Koreans leave for other countries. But what are the other reasons why they do this? I believe there are three important causes of this. First, Koreans want to study English. I think there is something wrong with the education system in Korea. People study English in elementary, middle school and high school but they can't speak English. The second reason is to get a job. In Korea, salary is smaller compared to the number of working hours. So, many Koreans want to work in other advanced countries. Also, houses in Korea are very expensive. So, many Korean people work very hard for 10 to 15 years to buy a house. Finally, many Koreans want to live in big cities but they are overcrowded, polluted and limited in space. On the other hand, countries like Canada are big. They also have a few citizens. So, they are a little quiet, with less pollution and enough space for everybody. But they do not have many citizens, so they promote foreign immigration. In conclusion, many Koreans don’t find their vision in Korea so they want to go to other countries.

PAGE 5 THE CHRONICLE MLIn-Depth

Y ang Choong Hoon also known as Eric is one of the new students in MLI who,

just like others, came here to learn English. He seems to be a serious-looking guy in school. But if you get the chance to know him, he is very warm-hearted and well-mannered. Seeing him, you would notice first his Japanese eyes and his shy-type appearance but nobody would ever imagine the furtive knack of him. There is something he definitely can do that others can’t. Now, let us try to go to a more profound side of him.

When he was in high school, he dreamt of becoming a hair stylist but he wasn’t able to pursue it because of his mother’s decision and advice --- which had been the opposing force of his desire. His father on the other hand wanted to influence him in taking a career in garment design but later on, when he reached twenty-one and entered the university, he picked his own choice. He took Culinary Arts as his major. He then realized that it was really meant for him to be in the world of cookery and become a professional chef, because it was really his passion to cook and eating is one of his favorite things to do. As a matter of fact, he worked as a kitchen staff in a high school cafeteria as his part-time job while studying at the university.

When he entered the Military at the age of twenty-two, he worked as a cook inside the military camp where he served for his senior officers. He often cooked Korean food at the time (kimchi chige, samgyeopsal, kamjaetang and pajeon). Sometimes he had experiences suffering from a headache thinking of the menu for the day because he was tasked to cook for high-ranking officers inside the camp consisting of 50 persons. It was a very tiring experience for him but because of that he had mastered how to cook Korean food.

After his military service, he started working in a Japanese restaurant recommended by his professor and stayed there for 3 years. For some personal reasons, he transferred to an Italian restaurant which was no longer a sojourn for 4 years. He stated that his best Italian masterpiece is Vongole, a kind of olive oil pasta. A few days back, the School President encouraged or even requested him to cook some food in the cafeteria such as Tomato Pasta and Chicken Salad which got splendid reviews and feedbacks from the students.

But there’s something odd about Eric’s craftsmanship. He uses his right hand when writing but when cooking and handling kitchen utensils like knife, he uses his left hand. This, according to him is quite strange.

He discovered his special skill in cooking when he first cooked “bacon mixed with vegetables.” After successfully mastering its taste, he never stopped exploring about various cuisines in the world. He acquired diverse cultural complexities of French, Italian, Chinese and Japanese style of cooking. He also has a jiff on pastry and dessert preparations. He added that he is a connoisseur in French and Italian food course and food styling. Eric truly has perseverance in his field.

He is into exercising if he is not in the kitchen. He likes physical activities like biking, fishing, mountain climbing, wakeboarding, windsurf ing and snowboarding.

He also concluded that cooking is parallel to customer service. He said, “I’ll be cooking and cooking for the rest of my life. Cooking is my life.” Presently, Eric is aiming to land a job of his expertise in Canada after studying

T here are many famous brands in the world but they are very expensive.

So, many people, except for the few rich and famous, don’t feel the necessity of buying them because there are other not so famous brands that are cheaper in price. However, this situation is different in Korea. Most Koreans have at least one or more luxury items. There are a number of reasons for this.

F i r s t , m a n y Koreans have the i l l u s i o n t h a t luxurious items r e p r e s e n t t h e m s e l v e s . Because they like to show off to other people, they

buy expensive articles by force or at least the imitations of these. Buying an imitation has now become a serious problem and because of this, people have lost the original purpose of buying quality items.

Second, some Koreans mistake the design of luxurious items to be prettier and more beautiful than those that are not. If someone buys a wallet and shows it to a friend and that friend doesn’t know for a fact that the wallet is very expensive and made by a famous brand, the friend will tell him roughly, “The

wallet is not bad.” But if the friend knows

Maybe, he will say, “Wow! It’s very

beautiful… so nice.” And consistently the friend will ask him about the wallet.

Third, the qu a l i t y o f e x t r a v a g a n t items is better than those which are not. Actually this r e a s o n i s proper. Many

normal products easily break or destroyed but pricey ones are never easily broken. The latter is stronger than the former including imitations so it lasts for a very long time if you manage it very well.

Nowadays many companies of luxurious items are trying to build more stores in Korea because there is a consistent increase in the consumption. Certainly expensive products have good points than cheap ones. However,

Koreans must consider many things before buying them—“Do I really need this?” Or “Is the high price worth it?” I don’t want

companies to earn a lot of money by taking advantage of Korea’s psychology.

I

have many experiences getting over

somebody whom I used to love. I met

one guy for about 5 to 6 years. Of course, in

the middle of that time, I broke up with him

many times. For this reason, I was able to

meet many guys. And now, I am single

again.

Actually, this is just a part of growing up

because we learn about love. After

becoming adults, we can see each other’s

heart for love. Love is beautiful, but

sometimes it could be a demon to someone.

It makes someone feel pain and get hurt.

So, we have to practice to be alone.

However, we don’t know the way to forget

someone and how to be alone. Honestly, I

don’t know as well, but I hope my way can

help somebody who is pain because of love.

At first, you have to clear your mind. Close

your eyes, and stop thinking. Everything

has to be white in your mind. If you’re

ready, stand up, and clean up your room

while listening to music. If you’re done, do

an exercise like crazy. Run and run until

you’re dizzy. And take a shower. After that,

you can sleep deeply for a while. When you

wake up, just breathe because your

condition won’t be normal. So you have to

calm down. But it will be the last time to

take a rest because you will be busy. You

have to find something that will make you

busy, and you have to focus on it. It’s okay

if it is like studying or working. Just focus on

it. Time will pass very quickly. Weekend will

come to us suddenly. “Oh my God! Today is

already weekend!” You have to meet your

friends, and laugh at everything you can do

like crazy. Of course, you can cry, but

laughing is better. You can cry only at night

after drinking. That is your free time to cry.

Cry again and again, and get over it. Enjoy

your time, and start another love. Why?

Because, new love is a very powerful

medicine. But, please avoid painful love.

Love as long as you can with all your heart.

Just don’t try to forget everything that is

beautiful. Forget someone whom you used

to love, and fall in love with the real person

who loves you. Then, you can see and

realize that love is truly a beautiful thing.

When I arrived at the airport, I didn’t know how to go to MLI. I didn’t know what to do so I looked really worried and lost. Then one Filipino approached me and asked me, “Sir, may I help you?” I told him my situation and then he lent me his cell phone. With his help,

I was able to reach MLI and I arrived safely. So it gave me the impression that Filipinos are kind. – Carl (Sim Kyu Yong)

Kind and they look like happy! – – I think that Filipinos are so kind and they look very happy. Because when I look around, Filipinos always smile when they talk to each other. – Kelly (Song Ji Yong)

Hot! – The weather is too hot! But it looks interesting! – Hun (Nam Hun)

Beautiful Philippines! – I came here a few days ago. It’s my first time to visit the Philippines. Everything is new to me. I think the Philippines is a very busy country. It has a lot of cars on the roads, too many people and a lot of buildings. Its shopping mall is

very big. I will be travelling around Manila. I think the Philippines is a very beautiful country! – Reagon (Kim Il

Geon)

I think the traffic situation in the Philippines is terrible just like in Korea! But when I looked around Robinson Mall and SM Mall I was impressed! It’s quite big and has a lot of good stuff! – Kevin (Jung Hyo Suk)

Hot but Interesting! – I think it’s really hot in the Philippines. I felt it the moment I arrived at the airport. Aside from the hot weather, one thing that surprised me is the traffic system. I found out that there are a

few traffic signals. It was strange for me. However, the downtown atmosphere is similar to Korea’s. There are many people and cars. Sightseeing around the Philippines is interesting for me! I would like to travel to Philippine tourist attractions soon! – Ed (Kim Bo Ram)

Hello! My name is Kelly. I want to tell you

about my plan of studying English. First,

I am studying English for 2 reasons. The

first reason is that I like to learn

English. I think it’s fun. Honestly, I

enjoy learning English that’s why and the

second reason is I think I have to learn

English because it’s important. Many

people and countries use English so I have to learn

English as well.

Next, I will study English forever. I want to keep

learning English until I can use English perfectly. When

I feel it’s hard, I will slow down a bit.

Finally, I will study English even in Korea continuously.

However when I become a university student, I want to

go somewhere or to some country where English is being

used widely. I want to go travel to many countries. I

think using English while having a trip is also studying.

In conclusion, I will keep learning English in Korea or in

other countries. And I will study English hard here in

MLI! Thank you for reading! :)

L ast Saturday I went to Sabang, Oriental Mindoro with my students

Benjamin, Kevin, Walter, Roy, Leo and Ray.

We took a bus bound to Batangas Pier. It was a long and boring ride for me maybe because I haven’t travelled for a long time. My accompanying students fell asleep on the bus except for me. I wasn’t able to even take a nap because my head was aching and my body was feeling sore. It took us 2 hours to reach Batangas Pier. All of us felt strange except for Ray because it was his second time to see that place. When we got there, every man asked us, “Sir/ma’am, where are you going? Sabang? White Beach? Calapan?...” I felt irritated because of that. Though that seemed to be blocking us, finally we bought a ticket to Sabang Beach that cost us P310.00 each. We waited at the port for more than an hour, everybody felt pretty bored waiting and they kept asking me, “Teacher why too long waiting?” But when we got on to the boat, all of them got excited and Roy kept on shouting especially when the waves hit the boat. Actually, it was my first time to take a passenger boat though I was born there. We arrived in Sabang at 1pm.

We were excited to get off because the island was nice and Mir, a former MLI student, was there waiting patiently with a smile. Right after we got off, we hugged and shook hands with Mir. We took photos and had lunch at a restaurant that Mir recommended – it was a Filipino restaurant. The men had fried rice; it was delicious according to them but I had burger and spring union which Mir ordered for me. After that, we took a short rest. The most exciting part of our trip was the island hopping. We had snorkeling, boating and swimming, of course! We experienced the clear water of Sabang and the terrific corals and fishes. There were really wonderful creatures. We fed them actually. We also saw sea snakes that made me scared that’s why I got drowned a bit and swallowed some water. Going on, we were able to see the pearl clowns that left us in awe! They were really wonderful! It was my first time to see pearl clams under the water. I felt amazed with the whole place. I was born there but it was just my second time to be there after 23 years. The most exciting part I guess for the guys was the samgyupsal time. Everyone talked about the whole-day experience and I could say that they were all satisfied.

I was surprised as well because there were many Koreans staying there—some were resort owners and others were restaurant owners. Every time I heard a Filipino talking in English with Korean accent it made Ray and I laughed. I guess Filipinos were accustomed to Koreans and vice versa. Even the souvenir vendors spoke in Hangul that made me feel envious for I know only a few words like kamsahamnida, hakseng, sonsengnim…

Mir and Ray were really accommodating to me and the rest of the guys as well. It was my first time to be with 7 men- strange, exciting and funny! They had their own way to make us laugh. The coolest in the group was Kevin. He made us laugh most of the time. The Mindoro trip was quite memorable for all of us especially for Mir who took up diving lesson for 7 days. I guess he had the most out of his life in Mindoro. It made me feel proud that I was born Filipino and I have a beautiful country that most foreigners love to visit and Koreans are just one of them.

We left there on Sunday afternoon and arrived at 6pm. We had dinner at Shakeys.

It was a tiring, interesting and exciting trip! I’d love to visit Mindoro again if I have a chance.

It’s been two months now since we’ve

known each other

I can still remember the first day we met,

The first talk we shared,

The first laugh we created,

The first memories we made

I see a strong-willed man in you

Full of determination in everything that you do

But inside you still a boy

Who adores toys

You are an ordinary guy

Who flashes an extraordinary smile

With a hot and short temper that matches mine

I think your eyes is brown

That erases my frown

Shining through the clouds

And making me loud

When the breeze blows your hair,

It freezes me in despair

That isn’t fair

‘coz my feeling is bare

The stories that you tell

Put me under spell

Making me a princess

In a fairy tale

But where is my prince?

To kiss me in a bliss

Please tell me, is this story will have a happy ending?

I wish my dream will come true

So that I can be with you

You already decided your way

But I’m just here to stay

I will wait for you to realize the day

That spring is in May

As I looked into your eyes

I clearly see my future inside

Longing for your embrace tonight

I’m sorry to feel this way

I really know its a big mistake

My heart is aching and my world is breaking

What should I do?

I’m in love with you

I’m in pain and I can hear November Rain

I’m falling deep

And I want to sleep

Never to wake up without you here

I want to hold your hands and never let them go

But all I can do is to look far from you

I whisper your name,

Please don’t leave me in vain

“coz it will drive me insane

Tell me what I should do?

Answer my letter just for you.

I don’t know what’s this for

Taking you to the top of the world

And I’ll be around you

To give you the best of me

Pre-Chorus:

But it never comes

It’s only a dream

Chorus:

Wake me up, today

To be around you

Wake me up, today

To be around you

Our world may fall apart

But it’s still you and me

Enliven your imagination

And let’s try to break free

What’s Hot: David Guetta

When I first heard his song, I was wondering if he was the one singing on the beat of a turntable. I found out, he’s more of a collaborative artist. He focuses more on mixing and synthesizers resulting to a more upbeat and house style of music. Due to the collaboration of famous RnB artists in the United States, his songs became more popular in the music scene with up-to-date release on air. I’ve been hearing his songs over the radio, bistros and public transports. His popularity nowadays is still up on the hit charts. One of his catchy song right now is, “Without You” featuring Usher.

My Rating:
