Heath, Fuller, Molino and McLain Face Former ClubIt will be a clash with familiar foes for some of Minnesota United players and staff when the team hosts Orlando City SC on Saturday night. Head Coach Adrian Heath, assistant coaches Ian Fuller and Mark Watson, midfielder Kevin Molino and goalkeeper Partick McLain all came to Minnesota from Orlando. Both clubs have a similar past, coming into the league as expansion clubs with an extensive lower-division resume. In their first two years in the league, the Lions have been on the cusp of making the postseason each year, and after a strong start to the season, look to be continuing that trend in 2017. Led by wonder-kid Cyle Larin, Orlando is deadly on offense, but recent results have seen the club slip in the standings.
Galaxy Steal a Result from MNUFCMinnesota’s hopes at starting a home winning streak were dashed on Sunday as the visiting LA Galaxy stole a 2-1 result at TCF Bank Stadium. Impressive displays of goalkeeping kept the match closer than it could have been, with both sides generating lots of offensive chances. LA’s Giovani dos Santos opened the scoring with a skilled flick in the first half. Minnesota answered back in the second when Sam Cronin won a header following a free kick. He directed the ball into the path of Christian Ramirez, who powered the ball past goalkeeper Brian Rowe to level the score. LA was able to reclaim the lead in the closing minutes when a deflected clearance found the back of the Minnesota net.

Minnesota United FC plays in North America’s top professional soccer league, Major League Soccer (MLS). The league features 22 teams from across the United States and Canada.
After a successful bid to host the World Cup in 1994, the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) founded MLS to bring a top level soccer league back to the country for the first time since 1984, when the original NASL folded. The league was set to begin play in 1996 with ten teams: Colorado Rapids, Columbus Crew SC, D.C. United, Dallas Burn (FC Dallas), Kansas City Wiz (Sporting Kansas City), Los Angeles Galaxy, New England Revolution, NY/NJ MetroStars (New York Red Bulls), San Jose Clash (Earthquakes) and Tampa Bay Mutiny.
The league’s first match was played on April 6, 1996 as the San Jose Clash played D.C. United if front of 31,000 fans at Spartan Stadium. The league drew large crowds in its opening season, pulling star power from around North America and building on the excitement of the 1994 FIFA World Cup.
As MLS has continued to grow, clubs have begun moving out of shared American football venues and into soccer-specific stadium, led by the Columbus Crew who moved into the soccer-specific MAPFRE Stadium in 1999. Currently, 14 teams play in soccer-specific venues.
The league is split into the Eastern and Western Conferences. Each team plays 34 matches during the season. Teams play all conference opponents twice, once at home and once on the road, and each team in the other conference once, with an even balance of home and away matches. The remainder of the schedule is filled with matches against conference opponents. The top six teams in each conference at the end of the year qualifying for the MLS Cup Playoffs.
The postseason begins with the third through sixth seeds in each conference playing in a knockout round. The winners advance to the conference semifinals to play the first and second seeds in the conference. In this round, the format switches to a two-match aggregate series, with the team scoring the most goals over the series moving on. The same format is used for the conference finals. The winner of the conference final moves on to face the other conference champion in the MLS Cup Final. The final is a single match, hosted by the team with the best record in the regular season, with the winner being declared MLS Cup Champion.

A native of Gothenburg, Alvbage brings 18 years of experience to the Loons and will certainly take a leadership role in the squad. The veteran has been a top goalkeeper in the Allsvenkan, winning the league’s Goalkeeper of the Year award as recently as 2015. In his recent five-year stint with Goteborg, Alvbage has racked up an impressive 53 clean sheets and helped the club to four straight appearances in European competition.

After playing with Minnesota United on loan last season, midfielder Bernardo Añor has signed with the club ahead of the 2017 Major League Soccer season. The Venezuelan comes to the Loons from Sporting Kansas City, and has played five seasons in MLS. Añor came to Minnesota in 2016 on a season-long loan during preseason training. After a promising start with the Loons, he suffered an ankle injury during training that sidelined him for much of the season.

Whether playing at left back or at centerback, Calvo does well to stretch the pitch and create an imbalance in the attack. PREVIEW - MATCH 13Orlando City SC (6-4-2, 20 points) travels north to face 2017 expansion side Minnesota United FC (3-7-2, 11 points). Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. ET at TCF Bank Stadium.
The match will be locally televised on WRDQ TV27 and transmitted in English on Real Radio 104.1 FM and in Spanish on La Nueva 990 AM.
“At the moment everybody knows we’re going through a little bit of a difficult patch. So for me it’s about clawing our way out of that and to me that comes through effort, commitment and togetherness,” Lions Head Coach Jason Kreis said. “So I’m looking for another game where I feel like everybody’s on the same page and everybody understand what we’re trying to do.”
This is the first match between two of Major League Soccer’s most recent expansion clubs. Minnesota is led by long-time Lions coach Adrian Heath and assistants Ian Fuller and Mark Watson. Heath led the Lions to three regular season and two postseason USL Pro championships in four years.
City will look to pick up points in its second consecutive road match following last Wednesday’s 1-1 draw in San Jose. Carlos Rivas entered the match and scored within 20 minutes but Chris Wondolowski scored in the 83rd minute to secure the third draw in the all-time series. The Lions saw their home-unbeaten streak ended Sunday against New York City FC.
Rivas’ goal gave him two for the season to go with his team-leading five assists. Cyle Larin leads the team with seven goals and leads the league with four game-winning goals.
Minnesota is coming off a 2-1 loss to the LA Galaxy at home despite outshooting LA, 22-8. Christian Ramirez equalized in the 66th minute but was on the wrong end of a Romain Alessandrini free kick that found the back of his own net.
Ramirez is tied with Larin and two others for fifth in the Golden Boot race. Kevin Molino, who played four years for City in USL Pro and was

Orlando City SC (6-4-2, 20 points) saw its six-game home-unbeaten streak come to an end with a 3-0 loss to New York City FC (6-4-2, 20 points) Sunday night.
“Obviously grave, grave disappointment to lose our first game in front of our home fans. I thought the fans were excellent again tonight. The atmosphere in the crowd was terrific, the atmosphere in the stadium was terrific,” Lions Head Coach Jason Kreis said. “After every single win we talked about the improvements we need to make and so after the loss we stay the same. We’re not going to go into a shell or believe we’re the worst team in the league or that we’re in some very, very bad spot. We still need to improve. We still need to work hard every week. And we need to do our best to prepare ourselves for next week’s game.”
City finishes the season series with six of nine possible points against NYCFC. Léo Pereira, who was the first player moved between Orlando City and official partner Clube Atlético Paranaense, made his second consecu-tive start. Center back Jonathan Spector returned to the lineup, as did left back Donny Toia. Scott Sutter rounded out the back line in front of Joe Ben-dik. Antonio Nocerino, Cristian Higuita, Will Johnson and Kaká manned the midfield with Cyle Larin and Carlos Rivas up top.
NYCFC broke through first when David Villa scored from the penalty spot in the 14th minute. It was the Lions’ first penalty kick goal allowed this season. Rodney Wallace scored in the 35th minute before Villa tallied again in the 82nd.
Rivas put in a hard-working shift in his ninth start of the season. The Colom-bian raced down long ball after long ball, hounded NYCFC defenders and curled some nice balls into the box. The Designated Player finished with four shots.
“Carlos again worked really, really hard,” Kreis continued. “Tireless effort by Carlos. I thought he worked extremely hard to pressure defenders. All in all, it’s difficult to be pleased with somebody’s performance but I thought Carlos gave us everything that he could.”
The match saw Larin attempt his first career penalty kick, which he rang off the corner of the post in the 64th minute.
City will visit 2017 expansion side Minnesota United FC on Saturday, May 27. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. ET at TCF Bank Stadium. The Lions return to Or-lando City Stadium on Wednesday, May 31, when they host D.C. United. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET.

MATCH 12 POSTGAME QUOTESOrlando City Head Coach Jason Kreis
Opening Statement
“Obviously grave, grave disappointment to lose our first game in front of our home fans. I thought the fans were excellent again tonight. The atmosphere in the crowd was terrific, the atmosphere in the stadium was terrific, energy level, everything was good. I think at the beginning of the game I really felt like things were going to go in a really positive direction for us and then the penalty decision was made. I think that took some air out of us and then I thought we were doing okay and then the second goal comes and I think it takes some more air out of us. It’s one of those games where I feel like goals change games. It’s very cliché but I really felt like that was where we were at tonight. Then we had an opportunity to score our goal, which I think could’ve changed the game in our direction, and we didn’t take it. All in all it wasn’t our night. I’m not going to stand here and say anything crass or disrespectful as if we were the better team because we weren’t. New York City was very good tonight and deserved to win.”
On moving forward from the loss
“I think that we have to stay level-headed. I think that when we were 6-1-0, clearly we could have been feeling a lot better about ourselves than we were. We tried to stay grounded then. After every single win we talked about the improvements we need to make and so after the loss we stay the same. We’re not going to go into a shell or believe we’re the worst team in the league or that we’re in some very, very bad spot. We still need to improve. We still need to work hard every week. And we need to do our best to prepare ourselves for next week’s game.”
On the team’s mood in the locker room
“Gutted. It’s silence in [the locker room]. Absolute silence and complete and utter disappointment on the players’ faces and that’s important. That’s important that we have the collective mentality that we don’t like to lose.”
Orlando City Captain Kaká
On how hard this game is to take in
“It is a tough loss for us today, first lost in the new stadium. We never expect something like that but we knew one day it would come. It was to-day. We can say a lot of things about the loss and everything but I think it is time to think about what we can do for the next games. Five games without a win, it is starting to bother us. We have a week to prepare for the next game to put our heads on the right direction and be ready to win again.”
On the mentality of five games without a win
“There are a lot of things that are happening. We traveled through this period, we had some games in a row, we had a lot of games during the week. So there’s a few things we had to understand, set up, get ready for the rest of the season. But I think it is a good moment for the team to build our character and be ready for a big achievement.”
MATCH 13 PREGAME QUOTESOrlando City Head Coach Jason Kreis
On team’s run of form
“At the moment everybody knows we’re going through a little bit of a difficult patch. So for me it’s about clawing our way out of that and that comes through effort, commitment and togetherness. So I’m looking for another game where I feel like everybody’s on the same page and every-body understand what we’re trying to do.” On what the team has been working on “Mostly just trying to get a re-commitment to the defensive side of things. Any time you’re allowing goals at the rate that we have over the last four games, we need to stop, take a breath and remember what we talked about in the offseason and what we worked so hard in the preseason for, which was not to be a team that allowed a lot of goals against us. For me, any time you go away it also affords you an opportunity to be really singularly focused on that and that’s what we’re going to attempt to do.”
On Minnesota United
“We’re quite familiar with one of their players, Mr. [Kevin] Molino. And I would say apart from him there’s another three guys up top, the group in their top four is very gifted. They’re creating a ton of goal-scoring chanc-es in their games. They probably haven’t taken as many ought to havei n those games. We know it’s a team we have to be really committed to defending well if we’re going to have a chance to get a result.”
Orlando City Goalkeeper Joe Bendik
On Minnesota United “They’ve got 10 other guys on their team so I don’t want to get too carried away with one player. Obviously [Kevin Molino] is very popular with our team. Knowing his tendencies is key, but just as well he knows that I know his tendencies so that’s not really something you can play on too much.”
Orlando City Forward Cyle Larin
On Adrian Heath and Kevin Molino “It’s going to be different. I know Kevin was here for a long time and Adrian, they were a big thing at this Club when they were here and I think they’re going to try very hard and we’re going to try very hard to win the game, too. I think it’s going ot be a great matchup for both teams.”
Orlando City Midfielder Cristian Higuita
On team’s run of form “Personally I think when we won, we weren’t the best. Now that we’re losing, we’re not the worst, either. We have to work, pick up our heads and get back to winning.”
Orlando City will face Minnesota United for the first time but there is a sense of familiarity between the two clubs. Minnesota United head coach Adrian Heath coached Orlando City in both its first two years in MLS, in four years in USL Pro and when the Club was based in Austin, Texas. Heath led the Lions to three regular season and two postseason USL Pro championships in four years. In one and a half years under Heath, Orlando City went 16-18-16.
Joining Heath in Minnesota were Ian Fuller and Mark Watson, who also coached under Heath in Orlando. Fuller is a former Lion from City’s USL Pro days and Watson was an assistant coach in 2014 and 2015.

Orlando City kicks off at 8 p.m. ET Saturday night, 30 minutes after OCB begins its match against the Charlotte Independence and an hour after the Pride take on Sky Blue FC. Orlando City SC is still searching for its first nine point weekend of the season but came away with seven of a possible nine two weeks ago. On May 13, OCB earned a 2-0 win at FC Cincinnati and Orlando City drew against Sporting KC. The Pride handed North Carolina its first loss of the season the next day.

The Lions and Loons are led by a pair of fantastic forwards. All-Star striker Cyle Larin and Christian Ramirez are in a four-way tie for fifth in MLS with seven goals each. Each of them also has one assist and they’ve both played 12 games this season. Larin leads MLS with four game-winning goals.
Larin has speedy forward Carlos Rivas next to him. Rivas leads the team and is tied for fifth in MLS with five assists.
FANTASTIC FORWARDS6
Midfielder Kevin Molino played for the Lions during their USL Pro days and was one of eight players brought up to MLS in 2015. The Trinidadian tore his ACL on May 2, 2015, against Brazilian side Ponte Preta and was limited to just seven appearances in City’s inaugural MLS season. Molino came back to start the 2016 season and scored his first MLS goal on a penalty kick in City’s 4-1 romping of the defending champion Timbers. Molino went on to score 11 goals and eight assists, both good for second on the team.
Molino was traded to Minnesota on Jan. 26 in a blockbuster deal for $450,000 in GAM and $200,000 in TAM. Included in the trade was goalkeeper Patrick McLain, who was selected by City in Stage 1 of the 2016 MLS Re-Entry Draft.
SUNSHINE STATE TO LAND O’ LAKES5
Minnesota United is hosting Pride Night Saturday at TCF Bank Stadium. United is celebrating the LGBTQ community and in October 2014 became the first professional sports team to sign the Athlete Ally pledge.
Orlando City has shown similar support for the LGBTQ com-munity. On June 18, 2016, the lower bowl of Camping World Stadium was a spectrum of the colors of the rainbow as a tribute to the 49 victims of the June 12 tragedy at Pulse Nightclub. Pride flags flew all around the stadium and the match was paused in the 49th minute for a moment of silence.
PRIDE NIGHT2
In addition to the familiar faces in Minnesota, the Lions are also quite familiar with Loons goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth. The for-mer New England Revolution goalkeeper has played five matches against Orlando City and has allowed nine goals. Shuttleworth is 1-1-3 against the Lions all-time.
SHOWING HIS WORTH3
Orlando City is looking to avoid a second two-game losing skid. The Lions are winless in five since their red-hot start despite some point-worthy performances. City was unlucky to leave Toronto empty handed after Kaká’s strike at the stroke of halftime and some golden second-half opportunities. The Lions continued their home-unbeaten streak with a draw against Sporting KC but saw it broken Sunday against NYCFC. Before the schneid, Orlando City had won eight of its last nine dating back to last season. City hasn’t gone five games without a win since August-September of 2015.
OFF THE SCHNEID7
Jason Kreis has built an extensive career in MLS as both a player and a coach and is a notable figure in the history of soccer in the
U.S. Kreis was the 43rd overall selection by the Dallas Burn in the inaugural 1996 MLS Draft and quickly became a cornerstone of the franchise. He scored Dallas’ first ever goal and in 1999, he became the first American-born player to win MLS MVP honors. After a nine-year stint in Dallas that ended in 2004, Kreis still holds the Dallas records for most games played (247), games started (227), minutes (20,290), goals (91) and assists (65).
Kreis joined Real Salt Lake ahead of its 2005 expansion season and scored RSL’s first ever goal. He played the last three years of his career at RSL. Kreis became the first player in MLS history to score 100 goals and is sixth all-time in MLS scoring with 108 career goals.
RSL hired Kreis as head coach immediately he announced his retirement from playing in May 2007. Kreis led RSL to its first playoff appearance in 2008 and its first and only MLS Cup in 2009. Under Kreis, RSL qualified for the playoffs every year from 2008-2013 and fell one penalty kick short of a second MLS Cup in 2013.
After a successful period at RSL, Kreis joined 2015 expansion side NYCFC ahead of its inaugural season.
The Omaha, Neb., native played four seasons at Duke University from 1991-94 and advanced to the College Cup in 1992. Kreis also scored one goal in 14 appearances for the U.S. national team from 1996-2000.
ASSISTANT COACH BOBBY MURPHYBobby Murphy currently serves as assistant coach and technical coordinator of the Pro Academy. Murphy served as interim head coach for four games during 2016 before Orlando City hired Jason Kreis.
Prior to joining Orlando City, Murphy was a director for 13 years at St. Stephens Episcopal School, one
the country’s four residential academies.
Murphy has a United States Soccer Federation “A” coaching license, as well as a National Youth license. He is a member of the USSF National Staff and a U.S. Youth Soccer National Instructor, giving him a vast repertoire of coaching experience. Also, Orlando City’s Pro Academy enjoyed great success under Murphy’s leadership.
