DO I NEED TO FILE A MN STATE RETURN? If you lived in MN for 183 days or more in 2013 AND you had taxable income for federal, you are required to file a MN income tax return. This will apply to most Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors. Also, if you have a number in Box 17 of your W-2, you will want to file. If you do not meet the 183 day rule see below. W-2 1) Do you have income in Minnesota ? Look at your Form W-2 Boxes 15 and 16 to see whether MN is listed as the state and there is a wages number in Box 16. YES- Go on NO- You do not have to file unless you meet the requirements for filing under “other income” 2) Is the number in Box 16 $3,950 or more? YES- You need to file NO- You only file if there is a number in Box 17 – or you meet the requirements for filing under “other income” OTHER INCOME 1) Did you earn any other income while in Minnesota (Consulting, interest, dividends, stock sales, gambling, etc. - reported on Form 1099-Misc, any other form with 1099 on it, Form W-2G, etc). YES- Go on NO- You do not have to file unless you meet the requirements for filing because of your Form W-2 2) Is the amount of the 1099 or other income combined with the amount on your W-2 $10,000 or more?

If you have to file a MN return you will need Form M1, Form M1W and Form M1NR which are all available at www.taxes.state.mn.us under Individual Income tax- Forms and Instructions. Printing the forms off ahead of time and filling in your name, TIN and other general information will help speed up the process of filling out your taxes.
