Lifestyle & LeisureThe Ryder Cup

The Ryder Cup (officially the Ryder Cup Matches) is a biennial golf competition between teams from Europe and the United States. The

competition is jointly administered by the PGA of America and the PGA European Tour, and is contested every two years, the venue alternating between courses in the United States and Europe.

The Ryder Cup is also the name of the trophy, after the person who donated it, Samuel Ryder. The Ryder Cup, and its counterpart the Presidents Cup, are unusual in the world of professional sports, since despite being high-profile events that bring in tens of millions of dollars in TV and sponsorship revenue. The players receive no prize money.

The 2012 contest will take place on 28, 29 and 30 September at Medinah Country Club, Medinah, Illinois. The competition began following an exhibition match in 1926 between a team comprising American professionals against a similar one drawn from the British PGA on the East Course, Wentworth Club, Virginia Water, Surrey, UK. The first competition took place in 1927 at the Worcester Country Club, in Worcester, Massachusetts.

Early matches between the two sides were fairly even, but after the Second World War, repeated US dominance[3] led to a decision to extend the representation of the British and Irish[4] team to include continental Europe in 1979. This change was partly prompted by the success of a new generation of Spanish golfers of the time, including Seve Ballesteros and Antonio Garrido, who, in 1979, became the first Spaniards to play in the event. Since then, Team Europe has included players from Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, and Sweden. Since 1979 Europe has won eight times outright and retained the Cup once by tying, with seven American wins over this period.

Following on from the drama of Celtic Manor in 2012, which saw Europe defeat the United States by 14½ to 13½, all eyes turn towards Medinah Country Club for the 39th edition of the Ryder Cup.

Located approximately 40 minutes from central Chicago, Medinah is one of golf’s most iconic venues. The championship number 3 course at Medinah is rich in tournament pedigree having played host to three US Open’s and two USPGA Championships. Medinah is also famous for its stunning clubhouse which forms the impressive centrepiece of this superb venue.

When the Ryder Cup crosses the Atlantic for the 2012 Match, it couldn’t be going to a venue that contrasts more sharply with Celtic Manor. From a new course built with the Ryder Cup in mind, the competition will be staged at one of America’s true classics, built in the roaring twenties by a group of wealthy golf-mad businessmen.

Medinah Country Club, near Chicago, remains one of America’s finest and it has hosted US Opens, US PGA Championships, Western Opens and Chicago Opens.

In 2010 Europe regained the Ryder Cup by the most slender of margins at Celtic Manor, with Graeme McDowell clinching the vital winning point from the USA’s Hunter Mahan on the 17th green to win 14½-13½. It was arguably the best Ryder Cup in years and it has set the scene for a thrilling encounter on US soil, when Spanish legend Jose Maria Olazabal is expected to lead the team.

Should you seek help?

GPs are reporting that more and more patients complain of having no energy. So much so, that the syndrome now has its own name – tired all the time, or TATT.

It’s 7am. The alarm goes off and your eyes snap open. You leap out of bed feeling refreshed and ready for anything. Does this sound like you? Or are you more likely to hit the snooze button, roll over and try to grab another ten minutes’ sleep before you face the day?

If you often feel you’re flagging, the most important thing is not to ignore it. TATT is common, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try to do something about it.

There are many different causes of fatigue, and it’s always a good idea to start by speaking to your GP.

If you feel overwhelming exhaustion, which gets worse with activity and does not improve with rest, you may be suffering from myalgic encephalopathy (ME) or chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). A cure has not yet been found, but there are treatments and self-help measures that can ease the symptoms.

Your doctor will also be able to test for other medical problems that can cause tiredness, such as anaemia, thyroid problems, food intolerances or diabetes.

Most cases of TATT are due to psychological

problems, such as depression and anxiety. Traumatic life events, stress and money worries can also cause fatigue. Talking about your problems may help, and your doctor could refer you to a counselling service.

If you’ve ruled out these causes but are still feeling flat, there are lifestyle changes that can help.It sounds obvious, but it’s essential to make sure you’re getting enough good quality sleep. This might be easier said than done, but make it a priority for a few weeks and see how much better you feel. The Royal College of Psychologists’ advice is to go to bed and get up at the same time each day. Avoid napping, and try a soak in a warm bath before you go to bed.

Reduce your stress levels by building some relaxation time into your daily schedule. This could be something as simple as listening to your favourite music or meeting friends for a chat.

Diet can also play a part in determining your energy levels. Try eating small snacks throughout the day, rather than one large meal in the evening. Avoid alcohol and drink more water. Cutting out caffeine will also help, but do it gradually to avoid getting headaches.

Finally, you may not feel like it, but exercising is another proven way to fight fatigue. Even a quick 15-minute walk around the block will give you an energy boost.

Flossing removes plaque and food particles from between teeth and under the gum line, which could cause gum disease and tooth decay. Recent

research shows that diseased gums are responsible for the release of inflammatory chemicals into the bloodstream, which can then contribute to heart disease. Flossing should form part of our daily dental hygiene routine, but to be effective needs to be done properly. Here’s how!

Choose your floss. If your teeth are close together, try a waxed version which slides easier between the teeth.

Break off about 18 inches of floss, wind around the middle finger of each hand until 1-2 inches remain and pull tightly between the thumb and index finger.

Using a gentle ‘rocking’ motion, guide the floss between the teeth until it reaches the gum line, then gently guide the floss up and down against the side of the tooth and under the gum line.

Using a clean section of floss, repeat for the next tooth and continue the process until all teeth have been treated, not forgetting to floss the side of the teeth at the back of your mouth!

The jury is still out on whether it is best to floss before or after brushing, but the most important thing is to do it. It isn’t just good for fresh breath, it’s good for the health of your entire body!

Sheps Dog Training Centre is owned and run by Janie, eldest daughter of the Armstrong clan, she and her sister Sue are pround to be the 4th

generation of Armstrongs to live at South Forest farm since its original occupation by the family during the first world war. it was purchased outright from the Duke of Portland circa 1946 and remained a small arable farm with every kind of animal imaginable.

As she grew up Janies’s best friends were always the cows, sheep, pigs and ponies, cats and dogs. A shy girl, she would often run and hide when her parents had visitors, she spent more time talking to animals than people and laughingly now says she got a lot more sense from them than many humans.

Janie found she had a special kind of way with animals, they somehow understood each other and, for the most part, she could get them to do what she wanted. She had patience, kindness and understanding that went much deeper than many could imagine, it was like she could somehow read the innersoul of an animal and they in turn realised they could trust her.

Even wild animals and little birds would stand still for a while and listen to what she had to say and its these special gifts that has made Janie the trainer she is today.

Janie specialises in animals who for one reason or another have turned aggressive or have other traits of antisocial behaviour.

She now has a following of people and animals who will say this lady has made a difference to our lives and maybe, just maybe, she could help you too

She is lucky enough to have the facilities to keep 9 german shepherds of her own, many of which help her with the training. Her stable, happy dogs help heal the minds of others who for one reason or another have turned aggressive or just dont want to know humans or other dogs anymore.

There is an alternative to that dreaded trip to the vets and there is a lady who will keep on trying above and beyond the call of duty...not every battle is won, some, sadly, cannot be helped, but for those who can, pick up the phone and make that call and give your dog the chance he or she deserves.

Please remember, dogs arent robots, they think and feel like we do. Many of the so called problems are caused by boredom. Training is good for the soul but it has to be maintained and some learn quicker than others. Some dogs want to learn but some owners give up at the first hurdle and let them down....patience kindness and persistence will get the results you want.

A dog is for life...enjoy your time together

DUKERIES U3AThe Olympic excitement is now behind us - although I am sure we all have our special memories of London 2012 and the magnificent achievements of each and every one of the dedicated sportsmen and sportswomen. On August 20th members of the Dukeries U3A celebrated their 20th anniversary in style with a super party held at the Jubilee Hall. Over 100 members had a lovely time and several past Chairmen were the guests of honour on the day. More about this in the October magazine. Nora Staley’s travel group are scheduled to visit Buckingham Palace in September and Cynthia Davies is taking members on a two-day theatre break to London in December – with the acclaimed  ‘War Horse’ the selected show. And, staying with the theatre, Sue Winscom has arranged a visit to the Theatre Royal, Nottingham in February to see Dirty Dancing - Sue is also taking bookings for the Sinfonia Viva at the Royal Concert Hall. The walking groups, lunch clubs, book club, paper craft group, ten-pin bowling group, scrabble and bridge groups are firing on all cylinders! And the gardening group, in the capable hands of Ann Mounsey, are looking forward to a Chatsworth Christmas visit in November. Ann is also organising a gardening group Christmas lunch at Southwell. Interested? If you are retired – or semi-retired (no lower or upper age limits), call 01623 824789 or 01623 862827 for more information. Our general meetings are held on the 3rd Monday of the month at the Jubilee Hall, Ollerton. Join the ‘Best Show in Town’ for just £17 annual membership!

Well what a month it has been here at the Edwinstowe and the Dukeries Lions Club!

It all cracked off with our annual quiz night held at South Forest in Edwinstowe, Where a good night was had by all. Many thanks to our quiz masters Sylvia Pink and Jon Yarwood and also to all the Members for all their hard work in making the event a success.

The quiz was followed by one of the biggest events with in the club - A change of President! Out going President John Whitlam handed over to our new President Tony pink at the evening meal of the clubs golf day, which was held at Retford golf course. An excellent time was had by all (golfers and non-golfers alike!) and by all accounts the food was brilliant.

It hasn’t just been the social events and fun raisers that have been coming thick and fast, our meetings have been big events in themselves!

We’ve had the spotlight girls dance troupe in all their glory come and collect a cheque for £400 we’ve donated towards equipment and on the 9th of August we had a excellent talk from Mr Harold Burrows from National Search and Rescue Dogs. Mr burrows had travelled all the way from North Wales to give us an enthralling talk on the life saving work they and their highly skilled dogs do all over the country.

Did you know that 65% of their calls are to missing children, missing children with special needs and to missing dementia patients? His talk turned into quite a social event with 3 members from Retford lions, and 5 members of North Notts Lions attending as well as wives and partners.

Our next event is our Annual Race Night to be held at South Forest in Edwinstowe on the 14th of September at7.30pm. Tickets are £7.50 and include a pie, chips and peas supper. Always a good night so please do come!

This step is long overdue and while I still have concerns that the Adjudicator may lack the ‘teeth’ it needs to maximise its positive impact, I look forward to the coming debate.      It isn’t just dairy that is fighting to stay British though, and as consumers we do need to consider that aside from the massive economic and employment implications, if we lose British agriculture, we will lose the British countryside too as the green and pleasant lands we all hold so dear become redundant and unsustainable.

So what positive steps can we take? Buy British where we can and put a little thought into your purchases and who you buy them from. For example, if you choose free range or British eggs, what about the mayonnaise you buy? Or the cakes? When buying meat, take those extra two seconds to check it’s British and when buying dairy – not just milk but cheese and cream as well – be selective in your choice of retailer.

We also need to get young people to join and stay in British food production and processing and I was delighted to see that the “Feeding Britain’s Future” week has been announced by Britain’s food and grocery industry.

On 17 September 2012, members large and small will open the doors of their factories, farms, shops and facilities for a week to give young unemployed people some pre-employment training; this will include interviewing techniques, CV writing workshops and an insight into the skills needed for work. Many of the young people have real economic value and just need a helping hand. If you are a business associated with the food and grocery industry and would like to support young people getting into the industry, take a look at the website www.feedingbritainsfuture.com for more information.

It is a difficult time for British producers and it’s a tough time for consumers too but there are so many simple steps we can take to support one another to keep British farming alive and to keep British produce great.

The recent crescendo to the ongoing crisis in the Dairy Industry sadly came as little surprise to many of us. As a former dairy farmer forced

to take the difficult decision to leave the industry, I understand completely the pressure those who have chosen to fight on in an increasingly unviable sector are facing.

Of course I went to the recent NFU “SOS Dairy” seminar to meet with local producers and it was with measured relief that I heard Jim Paice commit providing up to £5 million in additional funds this autumn under the Rural Economy Grant scheme for projects in the dairy industry, to help producers to increase their competitiveness and add value to boost their market returns. Of course this is good news, but seldom does Government manipulation of the market place offer a long term solution – politicians are not producers and are not best placed to understand the trade – that solution must be forged by both farmers and consumers.

Farmers and processors need to work together through an industry code of practice on contracts, and retailers have to help shift the focus away from short-term practices which are completely unsustainable. I welcome the commitment all sides have shown to reaching an agreement on this code of practice which I hope will improve contractual terms and conditions including greater price transparency.

These price cuts are a severe blow for dairy farmers. Government cannot and should not set prices but it will do everything its power to push all levels of the supply chain to make the real changes needed to guarantee the industry’s long-term future. I am also highly supportive of the proposed Grocery Code Adjudicator, due to hit the ground in the coming year, which will protect suppliers by ensuring that large retailers treat them fairly by upholding the Groceries Supply Code of Practice.

Health & WellbeingBetter Posture

Do you look at your posture? Others Do!!

When you see someone with good posture, standing or sitting up straight, chest out, shoulders back you are

automatically attracted to that person as they seem happy and healthy, kind and caring, honest and even successful.

The reverse is also true, that when you see someone who slouches or has poor posture they give off a vibe that suggests they are unhappy with their lot in life, their job, money, love. They tend to get all the illnesses going round too.

Poor posture is a sign that your spine is out of line. The stresses that we suffer on a day to day basis, physical, chemical or emotional can make us change our posture and cause the spine and other joints to become misaligned.

Our body is designed to heal and regulate itself. It manages this by sending messages from the brain through the nervous system to all organs and systems of the body and then back again, the brain can then decide what it needs to function correctly. The nerves travel through the spinal column before branching out. Misaligned joints can impinge on these nerves and cause interference to the messages. This can prevent the body from functioning at its’ fullest potential or healing properly.

Chiropractors are trained to detect these misalignments (subluxations) and correct them. The messages can then flow freely through the nervous system and back to the brain and allow your body to function more fully.

Whether you are a sports athlete like Tiger Woods or Chris Hoy (who have regular chiropractic care), an occupational athlete (police officer or fire fighter) who rely heavily on their senses functioning at a high level, a parent or grandparent who wants to do the gardening or play with the kids or most important of all, babies or children who don’t want to grow up with the health issues their parents have, a Chiropractic check up could be the most important thing you choose to do.

How do you look after your health, wait until something goes wrong or do things to maintain your health at a higher level? Lack of symptoms are not necessarily a sign of good health in the same way that vomiting is not necessarily a sign of sickness (it can be your body’s way of removing a bug from your system), exactly as it was designed to do.

If health comes from a bottle of pills, does that mean that the person taking the most pills is the healthiest? Is your headache caused by a lack of paracetamol in your body? Many people say they are healthy

because they eat well and exercise, which is great but if your spine is

subluxated you are likely to be using the wrong muscles

or using them in an unbalanced way.

Chiropractic care is safe and gentle; it can enhance

the health of people of all ages and could improve the

effectiveness of the health care already provided to them.

The following was sent in by Jane Scall of Edwinstowe.

RECIPE FOR A SUCCESSFUL ORGANISATION

My mother Jo, was awarded the BEM a number of years ago for her dedicated service to The Women’s Royal Voluntary Service (WRVS) and a photo of HRH The Prince of Wales presenting the award takes pride of place on her mantelpiece. She is in the process of moving and my husband and I are helping with the task of moving her possessions and sorting through the stuff that is accumulated during a lifetime.

We have found many interesting mementos, photos, press cuttings and the like. The following was written on a typewriter probably 60 years ago before home computers and the internet. The “recipe” served my mum well with her activities for the WRVS and if organisations and companies were to use the following ingredients they may also be rewarded and recognised.

Take equal parts of desire for better understanding, co-operation and interest. Add some carefully picked helpers, thoroughly washed in the water of self sacrifice and drenched with perseverance.

Take a whole heartful of enthusiasm and dilute it with a headful of common sense. Then add spices – pep, tact, zeal,

zest – a generous dash of each, not forgetting a pinch of difference of opinion to give it a tang.

Now beat the whole thing up well into participation of all members, pour into a large vessel of opportunity. Be sure to drain off all pettiness, fault finding, prejudice, envy and jealousy.

Decorate the whole with understanding and a sense of humour.

Business FocusLeather Better

To Advertise call Spotlight on 01623 706570

Leather Better is a new business that specialises in restoring damaged leather so that it looks just as good as when it first left the showroom.

Leather sofas, car upholstery, dining chairs and handbags, as well as other leather items, can all be restored to their former pristine glory. Handbags can even receive a change of colour. The types of damage that can be repaired include scratches, staining, cracks, fading from sunlight and small rips or tears. Owner, Rob Tyler, had his “light bulb moment” when a new kitten scratched his much loved and very expensive sofa at home. He looked around for someone to repair the damage and could find no one offering that service in the area. Extensive research revealed that the UK distributor of Morelli, the world’s leading manufacturer of ‘smart’ repair products, offered courses in leather restoration. One lengthy course later followed by the purchase of some very expensive specialist equipment later, he was ready to go. Rob offers his services throughout north Nottinghamshire and the majority

of work is carried out at your home or place of work. He is friendly and approachable and very knowledgeable on his chosen subject. He starts with some straightforward and honest advice about what can be achieved. Then he gives you a free, no obligation quote and he does offer good value for money;  for example, the cost of refurbishing a damaged sofa is a tiny fraction of the cost of buying a new one. The first step in repairing the leather is to use a highly advanced piece of equipment called a spectrophotometer to precisely measure and calculate the colour and gloss levels of an unblemished bit of leather. Any stains or marks are then carefully removed and scratched or scuffed areas are polished smooth; the damaged area is then refinished in exactly the same colour as the original leather. The restored area is good as new and you really can’t see that it was ever damaged. If you have leather items that are not looking their best, why not call Rob and get him to work an inexpensive miracle.Leather Better 01623 237614 or 07785 299776

Health & WellbeingStoptober!

Stoptober is a Department of Health nationwide initiative which has been launched to encourage people to stop smoking during October.

Helping people to stop smoking is vital if we are to reduce the health inequalities & improve the lives of people living in our area. New Leaf, the NHS Stop Smoking Service for Nottinghamshire County is wholeheartedly embracing this challenge, with a month of activities, promotions and competitions that have been planned in this multi-agency project. Smokers will be encouraged to set a quit date in October & those who are still smoke free 4 weeks later will be entered into a draw to win fabulous prizes. For example, a Nintendo DS, a Center Parcs Spa day, shopping vouchers, beauty gift sets, leisure centre passes and a signed photo of Rebecca Addlington to name just a few! Carol Goodwin an Advisor for New Leaf commented, “As a service we are really excited about Stoptober. We work hard

throughout the year to support people who want to stop smoking and No Smoking Day in March is always very popular, so it’s great that there is now another date in the calendar for people to focus on & it’s a month not just one day.” Advisors will be on hand in various community locations throughout October, for example, Mansfield town centre, Idlewells shopping centre in Sutton, supermarkets and The Street at King’s Mill, to provide information, advice & register those who would like to quit. New Leaf can offer 12 weeks worth of Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) for free to those who don’t pay for prescriptions and just a one off payment of £7.65 for those who do pay. The service can offer one to one or group clinics, text, email, or telephone support. They can be contacted on 0800 389 7712, or by texting ‘Leaf’ to 80800.
