    Apologizing to somebody I

    Partner A: friend who did something wrong

    You borrowed a book from your friend because you really wanted to read that exciting

    story. But while reading it you accidentally spilled a drink over it. The nice new book is dirty

    now. You are sorry. Explain what happened and apologize.

    Partner B: friend who gets back a damaged book

    Your friend borrowed a book from you. You just got it for your birthday and it was nice and

    new. When he/ she returned it, it was all dirty because someone spilled a drink over it. Tell

    your friend how you feel about that and ask for an apology.

    Partner A: best friend who lied

    You wanted to go swimming with your friend. But then a cute boy/ girl asked you out for

    ice-cream. Without thinking you went to the ice-cream parlour and even forgot to call your

    friend to tell him/her that you can’t go swimming with him/her. Now you feel really sorry

    and want to apologize. Explain in detail why you did that.

    Partner B: best friend who is disappointed

    You wanted to go swimming with your best friend. You are disappointed because your

    friend didn’t show up. You want to know why he/ she did that. Then you find out that it was

    because of a boy/girl your friend likes. Tell him/ her about your feelings. Can you still be

    friends?

    Partner A: best friend who forgot to call

    You promised to call your best friend yesterday evening. But the TV programme was so

    interesting that you forgot about it. Now you really feel sorry. Explain why it has happened

    and apologize!

    Partner B: best friend who waited for a call the whole evening

    You waited for your friend’s phone call the whole evening. You even tried to call him/her.

    But no one answered the phone. You don’t understand why your friend forgot to call you.

    Tell your friend how you feel and ask him/her for an apology.

    Task:

    Partner A = girl/boy riding a bike

    You are on your way home from school on your bike. You nearly hit a boy/girl who is sitting

    in the road with his/her skateboard. You are angry at first, then you find out about the

    boy's/ girl's accident. Both of you apologize. You decide to help the boy/girl.

    Partner B= girl/boy who has had an accident on his/her skateboard You have had an accident with your skateboard, so now you are sitting in the road. A

    girl/boy is riding home from school on her/his bike. She/He nearly hits you because you

    are in her/his way. She/He is angry about you at first, then she/he finds out about your

    accident and you both apologize. She/He wants to give you some help.

    Partner A = angry child

    You have had a bad day at school. When you come back home and your parents ask you

    about your day, you are rude to them. You run angrily into your room and close the door

    behind you. After some time you feel really sorry about what you have said to your

    parents, so you go back to them and apologize. You explain what happened to you.

    Partner B = parents

    Your son/daughter had a bad day at school. When he/she comes back home and you ask

    him/her about the day, he/she runs angrily into his/her room. After some time he/she feels

    sorry about what he/she has said to you, so he/she decides to go back and to apologize.

    You ask him/her what happened to him/her and what you think about his/her problem at

    school.

    Partner A = best friend who lies

    You tell your best friend that you are busy because you must prepare a presentation for

    the next school day. That is why you do not have any time tonight and cannot go out with

    your best friend. However, your best friend finds out that you did not work on your task, but

    in fact met your girlfriend/boyfriend. Explain to him/her why you have lied to him/her and

    apologize afterwards.

    Partner B = best friend who suggests to go out

    You ask your best friend to go out with him tonight, but unfortunately he/she is busy

    because he/she must prepare a presentation for the next school day, so he/she cannot go

    out with you. In the meantime you find out from your best friend's girlfriend/boyfriend that

    they went out, so you feel very hurt because your friend has lied to you. He/She gives you

    an explanation and apologizes to you. Can you still be friends?

    Your parents tell you that they want to spend the next weekend at home because your

    granddad is going to visit you. He lives in an old people’s home because he can’t look after

    himself. You don’t meet your granddad very often because the old people’s home is two

    hours away by car.

    Your parents want you to stay at home to have a lot of time together. But you are invited to

    a friend’s birthday party on Saturday afternoon and evening. You really want to go to the

    party to meet your friends and to celebrate your friend’s birthday.

    You should meet halfway.

    You have to tell your son/daughter that granddad is going to visit you at the next weekend.

    You want to spend a lot of time together because granddad lives in an old people’s home

    which is about two hours away by car and you don’t meet very often. Granddad is very

    happy to see the whole family, especially the children.

    You want to have lunch and dinner together. You know that your child is invited to a friend’s

    birthday party but you think that granddad’s visit is more important and you want to have a

    happy family weekend.

    You are invited to a friend’s party on Saturday evening. Your friend lives on the other side

    of town. You want to go there by bus and stay until midnight. All of your friends are going to

    Your parents are worried about you and they don’t agree with your plans.

    You have to talk to your child because your child is invited to a friend’s party next Saturday

    the idea of this party at all because you are worried about your child. But you also know

    that it is very important for your child.

    It’s Saturday afternoon and your are watching your favourite show on TV in the living room.

    Your parents come home from shopping and tell you that you should learn for the next

    English class test now. So they turn off the TV. You know that you really have to learn for

    the English test on Monday but you still have enough time on Sunday because you don’t

    have any plans for Sunday. You really like this show on TV and you think this is the only

    time when you can relax from learning.

    You should meet halfway.

    Task:

    Partner B = parents

    It’s Saturday afternoon you come home from shopping and your child is sitting in front of

    the TV. You tell him/her to go to his/her room and learn for school. The English class test is

    on Monday and the last tests weren’t good, so this test is very important. You think that

    there is not enough time to learn only on Sunday because grandmother is coming for

    coffee in the afternoon, but your child doesn’t know about this, so you have to tell him/her.

    This is why you really want your child to start learning for the test today.
