MEMORY AND REMEMBRANCE

T he patriarch of "intrinsic monologue" in modem Greek letters, N.G. Pentzikis, had started his monumental talk on Mount Athos in Sydney with the

phrase: U I have rotten thinkin!/'. In my opinion, this summarises in the most complete and concise manner the entire problematic which time creates in human conscience.

The most marked difference between God and the world is that the former is uncreated, while the latter is created. And since the act of creation was not the result of essence . namely, of inconsiderate casuality . but of energy, hence an ultimate step of love, time imperceptibly entered between God and the world, in order to remind simultaneously the relationship and the distance.

Yet time is almost synonymous with change. Or rather, change makes us conscious of time. There is nothing around us and within us that is not subject to continual flow. Nevertheless, something in the core of our being always remains constant, safeguarding continuity, namely, our identity. Otherwise, our whole life would be an unending chain of "schizophrenic" moments, unconnected units that would render chaos even more intense.

The sense of time and of all in time, on the part of man, is what we call conscience. Now to have a more or less vigilant conscience depends on how broadly and how deeply we feel this "con" (with) among the other created beings. It is obvious that with conscience we learn, on the one hand, and we evaluate on the other. Thus we have cognitive conscience in the fonner case, and moral in the latter. Then we talk about conscious operations and about scrupulous acts.

To this duality of conscience corresponds, we could say, a kind of dual "codified system'; whose one leg is called remembrance and the other. memory. It seems that cognitive phenomena mainly belong to remembrance, while moral to memory.

It is perhaps for this reason that Plato said that "Knowledge is remembrance", just as the Latins said that "repetition is the mother of learning'. In any case, it is not without significance that, on the one part, as time proceeds oblivion intercedes· namely what was previously evident now becomes obscure . and the objective facts of knowledge

become less, again brought to our conscince only by remembrance; on the other part, the organ of sense, with which we judge and moraly assess acts or situations, always remains acute and undiminished, so as to be able to express our opinion always with the same readiness for the value or unworthiness of things, now or after the passage of a long time. In other words, this means that while time invariably blunts Oill cognitive conscience in a proportionate manner, it leaves our moral good judgement intact, as long as unforeseen phenomena of human disintegration do not intervene. We could even say that while our cognitive conscience increases or decreases depending on the experiences of life, Ollr moral conscience remains a constant ballast and a compass of orientation regardless of whether experiences increase or decrease. In any case, this is also the reason for which our prudent people, in order to characterise the loss of knowledge of facts on account of oblivion, use the characteristic verb "to forgef', which cannot be said of the retrogression of moral conscience, when it is a case of failure. Precisely for the same reason the former case cannot be regarded as an offence, while in t he latter case retrogression constitutes an act of guilt and of moral responsibility par excellence.

From what has been said so far, it surely becomes clear that while in common popular understanding one tends to identify memory with remembrance, also witnessed in the interchange of the terms "memories" and "remembrances" in daily language, in reality there are two different layers of the unified conscience of man. We should know this essential difference, for only then we will not be disappointed when our "remembrances' weaken and disappear, while on the other hand we will in no way permit ourselves to become "forgetful' of the benefits which we have received. To the degree that the element which we call judgement, as moral assesment, intervenes in this differentiation, .it should be emphasised that judgement presupposes memory, as the constant continuity of values in conscience. Here it should also be said that if this essential difference did not exist between memory and remembrance, then the most beautiful definition ever given, as to what civilisation is, would be completely inconceivable: "Civilisation essentially is what remains, when we forget all we have learnt!'

Yet, particularly in the language of our Church, the difference between memory and remembrance is indicated even more markedly by two liturgical expressions of the highest significance, which constitute the mark of Orthodox people alone. On the one hand, we refer to the "eternal memory' that we chant at the funeral of even the most insignificant faithful, and on the other hand, to the" ceremony of the memory' of each Saini on a sel day during the ecclesiastical year.

In both cases, it is obvious that "memory' does nol merely denote "remembrance", For it is certain that whoever dies will some time be forgotten for good, and it would be mockery, even to the point of blasphemy, to say that his "remembrance" will remain eternal!

And if to "commemorate the memory' denoted a mere "remembrance", it would not justify in the expression so intensely the active element for a junction (remembrance), which is a priority of a rather passive character, on account of the mechanical proceedings that cause it!

ST. NICHOLAS CABASILAS

ON THE ANNUNCIATION

(Continuation from the previous one) Again, the fact that she was aware that nothing in Her soul was unsuited to the mystery, and that Her habits were so much in accord with it that she made no mention of any human weekness, as well as the fact that she had no doubts about how all these things were to happen and did not debate the methods which would conduce to her purification, nor had need of an initiator . I do not know that all these things can bee considered as belonging to created nature.

For even if she had been one of the Cherubim or Seraphim, or something for purer still than these angelic beings, how could she have borne to hear that voice? How could she have thought is possible to fulfil the promises? How would she have found the strength to accomplish the marvellous work? Indeed, John, regarding whom "there hath not risen a greater", the Saviour Himself said, considered himself unworthy to touch even His sandals, even though the Lord appeared to him in humble human guise. The Most Immaculate Virgin, on the other hand, was courageous enough to take into Her womb the Logos of the Father, the very substance of God, even prior to His Incarnation. "Who am I and what is my father's house? And will you save Israel, Lord, through me?" Such things are said by the righteous even though the tasks they are called upon to perform have been performed by many others before them. Yet the Angel called upon the blessed Virgin to perform something entirely unaccustomed, something not in accord with human nature, beyond rational understanding. For in reality, what less was she required to do than to raise the earth up to heaven, and by means of Her own self to move and change the

It remains, therefore, to accept that in both these cases "memory' denotes one's moral person itself, which as "God's image" remains immortal forever, and for this reason we confess the "eternal memory' as a victory song. And the "celebration of the memory' is equivalent to "painting the icon", anew each year, of the person of the celebrated Saint, projecting it to the multitude of the faithful for initiation and edification, in an atmosphere of living worship.

universe? And yet she was not troubled in Her mind, nor did she consider Herself unworthy of such a task. Just as the approach of light does not trouble the eye, and just as there is nothing strange about saying that when the sun rises, it is day - so the Virgin was not in the least surprised to learn that she would be able to receive and to contain within Herself the uncontainable God. Of course, she did not let the salutation go unquestioned, nor did she allow anything to happen to her without considering it, and nor was she carried away by all the praises. She concentrated Her attention and considered the greeting most seriously, seeking precise information both as to the manner in which the pregnance would occur and everything relating to it. But beyond that, she did not ask whether she Herself was capable and worthy of such high service, and if she had sufficiently purified Her body and soul. She marvels at the miracles which are about to happen in nature, and passes over everything relating to Her own preparation. This is why she asked Gabriel to explain the former to Her, whereas about the latter she knew without being told. Indeed, it was from within Herself that the Virgin drew Her courage and Her confidence, since, as John said, "her heart condemned her not'~

"How shaH this be?" she asks. Not because I myself need to be purer and more holy, but because it is the law of nature that those who, like myself, have chosen to live a life of virginity do not become pregnant. "How shall this be'; she asks, "seeing I know not a man?"1 myself, of course,

she continues, am ready to receive God. I have prepared myself sufficiently. Nevertheless, tell me whether nature will 1 adapt, and how. Then, as soon as Gabriel informs Her of the way in which the incredible child bearing will take place, with the familiar words: "The Holy Spirit shall come upon J thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee'; and explains everything, the Virgin has no more doubts about the angelic message telling Her that she is blessed, both on account of the supremely wonderful events of which she was to be the agent, and on account of what she believe - that is to say, that she would be worthy of performing this service.

This was not due to any superficiality. It was the showing forth of the marvellous and secret treasure that the Virgin conceald within Herself, a treasure replete with the highest wisdom, faith and purity. This was made clear by the Most Holy Spirit in naming the Virgin "blessed", precisely because she accepted the message and had no difficulty believing in

the heavenly pronouncements. In fact, the mother of John, J when her soul was filled with the Holy Spirit, blessed the Virgin with the following words: "Behold the hand maid of the Lord". For she is truly God's handmaid who so profoundly understood the mystery of His coming; she who, when the Lord "stood at the door and knocked ", as Scripture says, immediately opened the house of Her soul and body, thereby providing Him who was formerly homeless with a true dwelling amongst men.

At this point a parallel can be drawn with the case of

J J

Adam. Even though the entire visible universe was created J for his sake, and every other created being had found itself a suitable companion, for Adam alone there was not found a fitting helpmate before the creation of Eve: Similarly, although the Logos broght all things into existence and ordained, for each of His creations, its appropriate place, He had no place and no dwelling prior to the Virgin. (to be continued)

S1 ANDREWS THREOLOGICAL COLLEGE

The faculty and students (including families of married students) of St. Andrew's Greek Orthodox Theological College organised their first retreat at Vision Valley, Arcadia from Sat. 18 to Mon. 20 July. The main speaker was the Sub-Dean of the College, Rev. Dr. John Chryssavgis who delivered three addresses on the theme, "Christian Witness in the Secular World". This topic raised many issues which stimulated lively discussion. On Sunday, the Divine Liturgy was celebrated by Fr John Kapetas (at the nearby Benedictine Monastery) and the sermon was given by Br. Themi Adamopoulo, Lecturer in Biblical Studies.

The weekend included times of reflection, prayer and recreational activities. The retreat, overall was a success in that it brought the students closer together and it is anticipated that it will occur on an annual oasis. 82

After months of preparation the Central Youth Committee of Victoria finally ventured to their long awaited retreat to Wagga-Wagga. Indeed the lead up to the retreat proved exciting as many youth from many of our parishcommunity youth groups displayed a vivid interest in making this retreat a worthwhile experience.

In all a total of sixty-four participants took part in the retreat making it an overall success from every aspect. The theme of the retreat was "Living Orthodoxy in a nonOrthodox world". The guest speakers at the retreat were Fr. Timothy Evangelinidis from the Greek Orthodox ParishCommunity of the Dorrnition of our Lady in Wagga, and Fr. Photios Pavlou from the Greek Orthodox Archdiocesan Church of St. Eustathios in South Melbourne.

Fr. Timothy spoke on living our Orthodox Faith in contemporary Australia, whilst Fr. Photios spoke on the parable of the Prodigal Son.

The retreat enabled young city dwellers to come in contact with their fellow Orthodox christians living in the city.

The Retreat Committee wishes to sincerely thank Fr. Timothy and the Parish of Wagga-Wagga for making the retreat such a successful .event.

JESUS, THE HOLY SCRIPTURE AND THE FATHERS

JESUS, THE CHURCH FATHERS AND THE BIBLE PART 1: JESUS AND HIS BIBLE

(Monk) Themistocles Adamopoulo.

Introduction:

How did the Church Fathers regard the Bible? What role and what authority did they ascribe to it? How frequently did they employ it? How did they interpret it? In short, how scripturally minded were the Fathers of the early and Byzantine Church? Beginning with Christ as the prototypical standard for subsequent ecclesiastical imitation, inspiration and comparison, and then turning to the apostle Paul's biblical methodology, this series of short articles" Jesus, the Church Fathers and the Bible," will then proceed to discuss various dimensions of the Church Fathers' biblical q,pOvTWa.

1. Jesus' Bible:

The Bible which Christ used was the Hebrew Bible, that is the books of the Law of Moses', the Prophets' and the so-called "Writings"' . With the eventual development and fonmation of a canon of exclusively Christian "scriptural" literary compositions known as the New Testament the Bible of the early Jewish people was subsequently labelled by the early Church as the "Old Testament"_ However, until the developmen t and "canonization" of these inspired early Christian writings (i.e. the "New Testament"), the early Church following its Founder, inherited and employed the "Old Testament" as its "Holy Scripture"'. From the descriptions and attestations about Jesus as recorded in the subsequentlywritten canonical Gospels, we discover that Christ held the Hebrew Bible in the highest esteem and continuously employed it in His public ministry. As such He was very "biblical" in His outlook. How, when and why did Christ use Holy Scripture?

2. Christ's usage of Holy Scripture:

While it is true that His usage of the Hebrew Bible (O.T.) was manifold, it is nevertheless possible to isolate a basic

1. That is, Genesis, Excxius. Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. 2. Among the prophetic books the most significant included, Isaiah, Ezekiel and Jeremiah. 3. Included among the '"Writings" (Heb. = Kethubim were Job, Proverbs and Psalms. Thus we find in the Gospel of Luke in the Emmaus Road incudenl, Jesus interpreting the Psalms to Hisa listeners. 4. In the aflennalh of the decisive Christ event, and the gradual formation of the 27 books of the New Testament canan, the sacred Hebrew, Aramaic (and some Greek) writings were seen as the literary expression of God's Old Covenat with Israel. Hence they were collectively classified by the Church as the "Old Testament" and were still considered as inspired and authoritative (2 Tim. 3.16). Indeed il contituted the text of Jesus Christ's Bible or "Holy Scripture". The name "Old Testament" was chosen ooth to reflect the covenant to from which this collection arose as well as to distinguish it from the New Covenanl Christian writings or the "New Testament." 5, HOVJe\Iilr the early Church's "Old Testament" was a Greek version of the Hebrew Bible (i.e, the Alexandrian Septuagint) which included certain additional books not found in the standard canon of the Pharisees and rabbis, While the Orthodox Church describes these additional writings as "deuterocanonical" (e,g. Wisdom of Solomon, Tobit, Susannah etc.), Protestants who Only accept the Hebrew canon refer to these addihonal writings as Old Testament "apocrypha,"

four-fold schema which constitutes a major portion of Christ's biblical outlook.

(a) Biblical references: Jesus constantly made biblical references in recognition of its binding divine authority_ During His public ministry as well as during His various theological polemics (esp. with the Pharisees and Sadducees) He often appealed to the Hebrew Scriptures. Thus when askes by a teacher of the Mosaic Law as to which is the greatest commandment, His response was purely biblical, quoting in response from the books of Levitius and Deuteronomy.

"Of all the commandments, which is the most important?" Jesus answered, 'The most important one is this, "'Hear o Israel the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord adour God with all your heart and with all YOur soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.' The second is this, "Love your neighbour as yowsell " There is no commandment greater then these.' (Mk. 12.28-31).

On some occasions His biblical references were often marked with the characteristic formulaic statement "it is written" - yeypamOl, either in the affirmative or the interogative. Thus in the temptation narrative in quoting from Deuteronomy we read:

'The Tempter came to Him (Jesus) and said: 'If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.' Jesus answered, 'It is written (yEypaTOl) Man does not live by bread alone, but on every word that proceeds from the mouth of Goer (Mt. 4.34)

In the Marcan passage concerning the Messianic cleansing of the Jerusalem temple, Jesus in quoting from the Bible (Isaiah and Jeremiah) introduces the texts with an interogative yEypamOl:

• And as He taught them, He said 'Is it not written (ou yEypaTlTOl): My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations But you have made it "a den of robbers.~ (Mk. 1117)

At other times His reference to Holy Scripture was made in tenms of the more usual Jewish designations of Scripture - (i) by the collective "Law" (or simply "Moses"), the "Prophets' and the 'Writings" (or Psalms); (ii) by the generic designation "Scripture" (f paq,~) or (iii) by the name of the individual biblical book or its author:

• And He said to them, '. . . everything written about me in the Law of Moses and in the Prophets and in the Psalms, was bound to be fulfilled.'" (Lk. 24.44)

(To be continued)

THE DIVINE LITURGY 13. People and Creation

Gods infinite love includes, together with the people, the entire creation of the visible world. The whole universe was created by God as the Kingdom of man, who

receives the world from God and offers it back to Him in thanksgiving. This act takes place especially in the mystery of the Divine Liturgy. In it, man as the priest of God's world offers the material gifts, which he took from God, and receives them back after they have been blessed and transformed by God Himself. It is for this reason that in the nest petition of the series of prayers at the beginning of the Divine Liturgy we pray for the world and for the material benefits which God offers through the world: "For favourable weather, an abundance of the fruits of the earth, and peaceful times, let us pray to the Lord".

The attainment of peace and harmony between people and God and the peaceful coexistence between people and the creation was shattered with mans' fal l. After the fall of humankind, man was subjected to corruption and to death, and the world became ephemeral and mortal. The direct consequence was that confusion and corruption came upon bot h t he people and the entire world. Now, it is from this fall, corruption and catastrophic propensity that both the people and t he whole world want to become liberated. And it is for this very reason that we pray at the Divine Liturgy for temperate weather, which influences and on which depends our life and the life of our universe, with the fruits which it produces for its and our sustenance.

The Church is neither ignorant nor indifferent for the material needs of people. Many prayers are offered, so that God may grant all the necessary presuppositions for the earth to bear good fruits, favourable winds, sun and rain, as well as all the gifts of nature. In the Great Prayer Book of the Church there are included special prayers for the prevalence of peaceful times, which we also ask at the Divine Liturgy; more particularly, there are prayers for the danger which threatens people and the world, such as the drought, storms, floods, excessive heats and frosts. With these prayers and with the prayer of the Divine Liturgy we ask the Lord for the normal operation fo the laws of nature, so that we may enjoy the fruits and products of the earth, that is necessary for our life. We ask of God to stop the catastrophic propensity of the elements of the nature, so that everything may operate under God's law and will, for the benefit of the world and of all people.

THESSALONIKI - A special event with the theme "Orthodoxy-Hellenism - a humanistic perspective for Europe in the year 2000" was organised by the Pan-Macedon ian Association. Bishop Ireneos of Novisad in Serbia spoke by referring to the relations between Greece and Serbia.

He commented favourably on the statement made by Pope John-Paul II concerning the Greekness of Macedonia, and maintained that there is an alliance between Roman Catholics and Moslems in Bosnia. He emphasised that, in the Roman Catholic churches of Zagreb, children are being baptised by force. Finally, he stated that most Orthodox bishops have escaped from their positions in Croatia, fearing that they may be arrested and used as exchanges.

CONSTANTINOPLE - The name day of His Holiness, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew was celebrated with particular grandeur, on the occassion 01 the commemoration of the Holy Apostles Bartholomew adn Barnabas. The Ecumenical Patriarch officiated at the services which took place in the Patriarchal Church of St. George.

A reception followed the Divine liturfy, during which Metropolitan Joachim of Chalcedon addressed the respected leader of the Church. Moved by the honour which was given to him, the Patriach thanked all those who were present.

CONSTANTINOPLE - A seminar on "Religion and Environment" was held at the -Monastery of the Holy Trinity on the island of Halki, under the auspices of His Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. This was a further significant step in the Orthodox Church's attempt to protect the environment. The president of the World Institute for Nature, Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh, also took part, whilst Metropolitan John (Zizioylas) of Pergamon acted as chairman. In his address, Patriarch Bartholomew stressed that "The purpose of creation is not the use and exploitation of nature for the pleasure of humanity, but something far greater and more sacred". The general initiative 01 the Ecumenical Patriarchate with regards to the protection of the environment corresponds to the anxiety of the Churches in countries which were previously under communist rule and which have experienced environmental destruction.

CONSTANTINOPLE - The meeting of the Members of the Mixed Commission forthe Dialogue between Roman Catholics and Orthodox has been postponed. The meeting would have occurred at the BelemediG Theological College of Lebanon. The postponement was due to the fact that many Orthodox Churches decided not to send representatives to the meeting, as a result of the continual 'support given to the Uniate Movement, on the part of the Vatican.
