Aldermen: His Worship the Mayor (Alderman G. H. Smith), the Deputy 1fuyor (Alderman W. F. Bodkin), and Aldermen (Mrs.) Fowler, M.L.A., Brannan, Pawley, Portus, Bugler, Elvy, Goddard, Wright, M.L.C., Fernon and Greenup.

Staff: The Town Cmrk (Mr. R. P. Hitchen), the Chief Health Inspector (Mr. T. W. Chambers) and the Acting Supervisor ( Mr. w. J. Boyle).

Each member of the Council having received a copy of the minutes of the previous Meeting held on 23rd April, 1946, it was resolved: "THAT the minutes as circulated be taken a s read and confirmed and signed as a true record of the Meeting held on ?th May, 1946.

SYMPATHY:

Feeling references having been made by the Mayor and Aldermen, it was resolved by the members rising in silence: "THAT letters of sympathy be forwarded to the relatives of the late Mr. Whitford of Georgina Street; Mrs . Ledwidge, 24 Harold Street on the loss of her husband; Mr. Teesdale, 6 Pine Street on the loss of his wife; the relatives of the late Robert Campion, 5 Leamington Avenue".

~lderman Goddard asked that the Railway Department be written to asking them to attend to the footpath outside Ma.cDonaldtown Station.

Alderman Goddard asked if any information had been received concerning the restoration of the tram stop at Georgina Street. Alderman (Mrs.) Fowler, M.L.A., said that the Minister for Transport advised her that he expected all the tram stops to be restored very soon after Anzac Day.

Alderman Goddard asked that application be made to the Minister for Education for the re-opening of the Evening continuation School, Newtown and Newtown North Public School •

. Alderman Wright, M.L.C ., asked that the Chief Health Inspector investigate and report on the proposal for grea ter use of garbage receptacles throughout the Municipality.

Alderman Greenup asked: 1. that the Chief Health Inspector inspect 50/52 Raper Street, 2. that he be supplied with a copy of the letter from the R.S.S.&.A.I.L.A. re 1lissenden Road Flower Stall , and 3 . that attention be given to the footpath in O'Connell Street

- at the lower end on the western side.

Feeling references having been made by the Mayor and Aldermen, it was resolved by the members rising in silence: "THAT letters of sympathy be forwarded to the wife and family of the late Mr . H. Harding, Erskineville Road, a respected business-man of this district; Mr. G. Papousakis and family of Australia Street on the sudden death of his daughter; 1\tt. Hibberd of 1/7 Enmore Road on the tragic death of his son who was killed while motor cycling at the Sports Ground.

r egarding proposed alterations of the garbage collection from the narrow rear lanes to the Street frontages of various Streets and it was resolved: "THAT the report be received and adopted and that a garbage collection from the places mentioned therein be shifted from the rear lanes to the front of the premises· the garbage tins to be placed inside the front gate and, if this is not possible, they are to be placed on the edge of the pavement -all such tins to have a proper, tight-fitting lid in accordance with the Ordinance; this alteration to become effective on and from 24th June 1946, and the Town Clerk to inform the occup i e rs of the alteration in the method of collection". Alderman Fernon asked tha t his name be recorded as having voted against the motion.

Alde rman Fernon moved that the Council communicate with the School of Arts Committee and ask for a. reply before next Meeting as to the School of Arts' decision regarding the proposition put to them at the Meeting, and if no reply is received wit~he time mentioned the Council treat their attitude as negative. Seconded by Alderman Greenup. Carried.

Alderman Goddard drew attention to the fact that the Post Office clock has stopped and asked that the Post-Master be contacted to have the matter rectified.

~ . the whole of the tram stops would be restored as soon as possible after the holidays. The Mayor asked Alderman (Mrs.) Fowler, M.L.A., if she would take up the matter again with the Minister for Transport.

Alderman Portus drew attention to Newman Lane between Gowrie and Newman Streets. The Mayor said he would have the matter referred to the Works Committee.

Alderman Fowler, M.L.A., asked: (1) that attention be given to the footpath near the top of Newman Street; (2) that attention be paid to the condition of Newman Lane as a result of

,the operation of the factory of James Yates Proprietary Limited.

And there being no further business the Meeting terminated at 10.3 p.m.
