    There is a totally different world under over 200 meters of the seasurface. It is called Mesopelagic Zone, which known as the MidnightZone. There is not much light in this twilight world. Because of this,food prodecing plants are rarely seen here. Even worse, the superhigh water pressure would crush any creatures without proper bodyadjustment.

    In order to adapt the harsh enviroment under this depth, creatures de-velope various tatics through long evolution. Compared to this naturaladaptation, if human want to venture to inhospitable places, they needextra add-ons to enhence their body. Those are the pressurized skins,articial or natural. If a building is put under such pressure, what kindof skin it will evolve?

These adaption can become grotesque and unbelievablybizarre, although to those deep sea sh, the wired shape is chosenby natue and match the required function. These creatures of courseinspire the imaginations of monsters.

    While animals and human can adjust themselves to adaptenvironment, a city, too, has to evolve through different situation.One, maybe the most urgent one, of the crises that cities need toadapt is global warming and the problem of increasing ood.

    Duringthe eld trip in New York, I looked into the citys data and foundthat Manhattan is built up with complex of layers, from above theground to below.These layers, like spacesuits various layers, serveas different purposes. Can we apply these layers for the new functionof ood defence? Is it possible to learn from deep sea shs porousskin and add its feature to citys layers? Can this be a new skin forManhattan?

    Island SpecimenIn the ooded future, it ispredicted that many islandcountries will be submergedunder sea water. When the timecomes, human have to preservecertain islands as specimen, justlike the dead butteries in theframe.

    City SpecimenWhen the whole world is ood-ed, all new buildings and citieswill be designed to oat on thesea, but some cities are still pre-served for nostalgias sake. Inthat case, Manhattan might beone of the specimen cities forpilgrims to visit.

    NYC Rockbed MapPublished in 1994, this mapshows that the undergroundrockbed of Manhattan island. Indown town area of Manhattan,new layer of city covered the oldundulate geological layer. A lotof rivers, lakes, valleys are stillunder the city.

    Combining the ideas of hard/soft, city layers and ood defence,comes the experiment of permeable skin, which, in Manhattans case,is a two dimensional interface. One is the horizontal regulator betweensea and the city, the other is the vertical layers stand between uppercity and the underground rock bed. Computer simulations try to playwith these two different types of water permeation.

    Water was added on the top of the rst polygon object andthe uid was frozen at certain time. Then second wave ofwater was added and frozen, and then the third.

    My previous research suggested that natural, human or even cityadaption can be classied as two totally different type: hard and soft,and more and more people aware the importance of soft and tendermethod like deep sea shs skin and soft spacesuit. But is there anyreference of adaption that can combine these two opposite ideas?This is where I found the peculiar newt skin.

    A newt is an aquatic amphibian who lives between water and land atdifferent stage of life. To deal with this kind of life style, its skin tissuechanges with different environments, from jelly-like permeable skinto solid, water-proof surface. That is to say, newt is the combinationof deep sea sh and submarine, of soft and hard skin. Its amazingadaptability can be a great reference of ood defence of a city.Manhattan new(t) skin project is thus born.

    If in the early stage of newts life, its skin tissue iswater permeable, then how can one translates thisto landscape? It might be reservoirs to reserve waterwhen the ood invades, which wont stop the waterbut can slow them down.During the process of metamorphosis, the skinbecomes half permeable compared to previousstage. For the landscape, some hills are created todeter the ood, but between them, there are canals

    and streams that allow part of the water to proceedtoward the inner space.Then, at the nal stage, the skin tissue becomes moresolid and only controlled amount of water is allowedto pass through the surface. The frontline of the skinis harder, but the inner tissue still needs to conservecertain amount of water. The different functions ofthe cells are then translated to different landscapeslike dikes, canals and small lakes.

    Flood Frontline: Battery ParkBattery Park is one of the most seriously ooded areas in the event ofHurricane Sandy and it is also a famous spot of man-made land. So itseems to be a reasonable site to apply previous ideas of deep sea sh,ood defence and underground layers to the park rearrangement.This area had long been known as t he Battery since at least the 17thcentury, and it served as protection to the town. Now it does not needto battle against human army, but has to ght against natural force ofextreme weather and the rising sea level. It can be the very front lineof war between city and the sea.

    From time to time, city explorers organize trips for small group ofpeople to explorer the skin. They will gain insight on this spectacularproject and if the weather permits, they can even take you down tothe deeper space of the skin structure.

    However, In the event of the ood, citizens should follow the signallight and evacuate from the area as soon as possible.

    Before my master study, I possess six years of progressiveexperience in interior design and completed numbers of works inTaiwan and China. From assistant to project designer, I had not onlylearnt to work independently in small studio, but also with group inlarge design company.

    The experience trained me with computer skills of graphic (including3D, photoshop and illustrator rendering), and construction drawing,communication abilities and design perspectives. Range of the casesis varied; from modern restaurants, minimal receptions, deluxe movietheaters to art-deco residence space, including different scales andfunctions.
