A match of David and Goliath proportion comes to Inglewood when Napier City
Rovers take on Inglewood AFC. This will be the first time the two clubs have met.
Inglewood play local football in the Taranaki Premier Football Competition while
Napier City Rovers play three leagues higher in the Central League with the likes of
Miramar Rangers, Team Taranaki and Olympic from Wellington.
Napier City Rovers have won the Chatham Cup 4 times since 1985 most recently in
2002, and have also been crowned national champions on four occasions since 1989. Napier
have a football facility rivalled by no other club in the country. Inglewood will have their work
cut out for them.
Inglewood are a team that is not afraid to play some of the better teams in the country and only
two years ago made the 4th round of the Chatham Cup before succumbing to Miramar at Karo
Park. Inglewood are playing well, focussing on the Taranaki Premier Football league while also
keeping an eye on Napier. Napier have a tough away match on Saturday 5th against Western
Suburbs of Wellington, then two days later they find themselves in Inglewood.
The Inglewood Club is hoping the local community will come and support the event, they are
under no illusion just how hard the match will be. The Inglewood side will be selected a handful
of days before the game.
Inglewood will have Samoan International
Desmond Fa'aiuaso and Team Taranaki's
Vincent Sharp available. Desmond Fa'aiuaso
signed for Inglewood this year from NZFC
Franchise Youngheart Manawatu while 18 yr
old Vincent Sharp played for NPBHS.
Inglewood Captain Des Murray plays in the
Defence for Inglewood while David Hinz will
hold the midfield for the home side. Sharp
shooter Craig Adamson has hit a purple patch
this season and will look to increase his goal
tally against this classy Napier outfit.

From October GST will rise from 12.5%
to 15%, Super, benefits, Working For
Families tax credits and student
allowances rise by 2.02% to compensate.
Personal tax rates to drop from the same
date: 10.5% up to $14,000, 17.5% up to
$48,000, 30% up to $70,000 and 33%s
over $70,000.
It is calculated that for a family of 2 adults
and 2 children earning $48,000 that they
will pay after available tax credits a net
$1,500 in tax.
The top 12% of tax payers will still pay
49% of all income tax that leaves 88% of
tax payers to pay the balance 51% income
tax.
It seems to me that it is better to
attempt to drag the lower income earners
up rather than to drag the higher incomes
down, because that may leave no one able
to pay, then who would pay for the
provision of our health, education and
other services then?

The old values are fast fading away these
days. Nobody seems to want to face up
to their responsibilities anymore.
Recently we had the horrific event of a
teenager stabbing his teacher in the
classroom in front of the whole class.
The first reaction of the other pupils is to
pull out their mobile phones and film the
incident! Thankfully the teacher is making
a recovery, but I wonder if he will ever
want to stand in front of a class again.
Meanwhile we hear that the offending boy
is too young to face charges relating to
the incident. He was old enough to use a
knife in school. He was old enough to
stab his teacher repeatedly in front of the
class. It seems that he was not old
enough to face the consequences of his
actions.
How often do we hear from the young
generation that they were bored so they
had to go out and get drunk, or they had
to beat someone up?
To my mind most of the blame lies with
modern technology; there is so much
mindless thuggery and bad behaviour
shown on television.
It is time that the young generation face
up to real life and take responsibility for
their own actions
Makes you think doesn‟t it?

Durham Road Hall started life as the Durham Road School. When the
school was closed and the children went to Norfolk School it was taken
over by a Domain Committee enlarged and used as a hall. Through the
years the hall has been added to twice and now has an up-to-date
kitchen, new toilets and store room and the old fireplace has been
rebuilt.
For many years the hall has been the heart of the district, serving as a
venue for dances, meetings, clubs and annual events. In 1986/87 after
extensive fundraising it was upgraded with re-piling where needed and
the modernisation of kitchen and toilet areas. Most of the work was
done by residents of the road in working bees with donated materials.
The hall had a new floor put down in 2009, new water pump and a new
stove. Heating and insulation are now up to present day standards. The
Committee have been very busy organising Quiz nights, which have
proved to be most successful and with help from TET and NPCC, have
been able to service all debts. The hall is now again a flourishing part of
the community with many events etc planned for the future.
Good on you Durham Road!!

Around 1940 Alice was an Elephant
that was used by Wirths Bro‟s Circus
in the shifting of the equipment and
caged animals (lions, tigers, monkeys
etc) from the train to the show site.
She was used in the erecting of the
tent and moving heavy equipment.
Alice never performed but was used
to discipline other animals. She was
one of about 6 elephants in the
circus.
One night after the second
performance had f inished in
Inglewood and all the packing was
done on the train Alf West (Alice‟s trainer) noticed that Alice had disappeared.
She only had a short chain on her leg but was never tethered like the other
elephants and had a habit of going for a walk now and then, she also had a habit
of knocking over small building such as outhouses/longdrops which she had
developed a distaste for.
This night she had wandered off and ended up in the garden of Jock Hutchinson
on the corner of Richmond and Carrington Streets, where she made a mess of
his vegetable garden, Jock was non too impressed.
Alice normally never let Alf out of her sight as he used to talk to her as if she
under stood every word he said.
The circus personnel and animals lived and travelled on a special train which
took around three years to complete
a circuit of shows in Australasia. The
train used to stay in the railway yards
in the towns where the circus
performed.
Alice‟s trainer Alf West and Peter
Cramer‟s father were great friends as
they had been in the First World War
together.

In April the Inglewood Fire Brigade
was called on for 9 incidents, 4 car
crashes, 3 fires, a fuel spill and a
wrong address.
The wrong address was a call where a
house was involved. If you are ever in
a position where you need to make a
111 call make sure you tell the
operator as much as you can, town
name, address, road name and
intersections, all pieces of information
can get the help you need.
We invite people to come and join
the Inglewood Brigade. Both fire
fighters and fire police are needed,
especially people who work in
Inglewood or people who do shift
work which has them in Inglewood
during normal business hours. The
time invested is rewarding, new skills
are learnt and new people are met.

The North Taranaki Young Farmers Club
was established one year ago, members are
young people in the agriculture industry,
support industries and those interested in
farming. There are both social and
educational activities to allow members to
learn, meet like minded people and share
experiences. Members are also eligible to
enter the Young Farmer Contest which has
major prizes and is televised.
The club helped out the Inglewood Lions at
the maize maze with the „Scary Mazes‟ over
Easter. This was over two nights and
involved people getting dressed up, face
painted and going into the maze to scare the
people as they were going through. A good
team building activity for the club.
On 24 April golf was played at the
Manukorihi course. Ambrose teams were
organized and a good day was had despite a
lack of golfing prowess.
Meetings are on the first Wednesday of the
month at Inglewood Vet Services at 7.30 pm.
On Saturday 29 May there is an end of
season breakfast at 10.30 am at the Bishop‟s,
207 Kent Road. Contact Rob Bishop on 027
