• Tanzania Medical Stores Department (MSD) mandated to supply medicines to all health facilities in Tanzania, including emergency medicines
• Rural areas are islands, hilly places with difficult road infrastructure
4
THE GEOGRAPHY PROBLEM
• In case of emergencies, patients attimes loose their lives
• Health staff demoralised whenthey cannot provide better healthservices
• Mitigation of disease outbreakshampered
5
MEDICINES ARE DELAYED FROM REACHING PATIENTS

THE TRIAL SOLUTION
• Mwanza Region on Lake Victoria chosen forphase 1
• Approximately 2.8 million citizens and is oneof the most populous regions of Tanzania
• Lake Victoria zone, including its islands hometo over 30 million people.
• Key challenges include the rugged terrain, remoteness of habitats, and theunderdeveloped transport infrastructure
• Dar Teknohama Business Incubator (DTBi)joined hands with WingCopter to use Drones(UAVs) deliver emergency medicines to theUkerewe island health facilities (blood, anti-venom & vaccines)

!
• The Wingcopter UAV has a wingspan of178 cm and a weight of 9.6 kg.
• Carries up to 6kg payload, reach a topspeed of 130 km/h with a maximumround-trip flight time of 2 hours with acruising altitude of 5000m
• It takes off like a helicopter, flies like anaeroplane and lands like a helicopter atits destination
THE TRIAL SOLUTION - WINGCOPTER
• Stakeholder meetings were held with all parties involved and permits got• 4 Pilots were trained (4 drones for training & 3 drones for ferrying essential
medicines) • Telecommunication Operators allowed their towers to host the
communication antennas• TCRA (Telecom Regulator) provided the frequency to be used for pilots to
communicate with drones and monitor them on screens (M2M with sim cards)
• MSD and blood bank provided the essential medical commodities• Approximately 6 fights per day
