A company called, NTT (Nippon Telegraph and Telephone) launched the first automated cellular network in 1979. By that time NMT (Nordic Mobile Telephone) system was also launched in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. Then other countries followed in the early and mid 1980s. They used first generation (1G) system which still used analog technology.

But in 1991, Finland company called Radiolinja launched the second generation technology (2G) on the GSM standard.

Ten years after 2G was launched, there was new generation of digital telecommunication technology called (3G) launched on the WCDMA standard in Japan. This third generation technology was followed by 3.5G, 3G+ or turbo 3G which are based on the high-speed packet access called (HSPA).

In 2009, the 3G networks became overwhelmed by the growth of bandwidth-intensive applications like streaming media. The industry began to look for data-optimized 4th generation technology (4G) and they promised it with the speed improvements up to 10-fold over current 3G networks. 4G was first launched in U.S. by Sprint Network on LTE standard.

Health Effect

According to recent studies cell phone usage for ten years approximately doubles the risk of being diagnosed with brain tumor on the same side of the head as the preferred use of mobile phones. But anyhow, a study published in 24 March 2012 in the British Medical Journal questioned these estimates, because the increase of brain cancers has not paralleled the enormous increase in mobile phone usage.
