Mobile Usage Patterns By: SOHAM GADGIL

Inspiration

Today, mobile has become an integral part of everyone’s life. Almost each one of us carries a mobile wherever we go.

I was always intrigued by the sudden escalation in the mobile’s popularity.

I was curious to learn about the way the people in my area actually use their mobile and what fascinates them the most.

So, I decided that the best way to gather this information was to conduct a survey. And so I did…

About the Survey

No of people who responded- 176

No of people who actually took the survey- 130

Average age of people who responded- 21.6

I compiled the data and created a presentation addressing it.

The following slides show the analysis and the inference for each question asked in the survey.

What type of mobile do you use?

Inference: As expected, most of the people prefer samsung to other companies. However, quite a few(10%) also use Micromax.

What is the operating system of your mobile?

Inference: As expected, almost all people(84%) use the android operating system.

Do you have a feature phone or a smartphone?

Inference: Again, as expected, almost all people(94%) have a smart phone.

Is it a touch screen?

Inference: Everyone has a touchscreen mobile. In fact, only 3 people said that they had a qwerty phone

What is the screen size of your mobile?

Inference: It is a somewhat even graph suggesting that there is no specific preference given to the screen size. Unexpectedly, however, quite a few people use large 5 inch mobiles(31%)

What are the things you use the mobile most for?

Inference: Expectedly, most of the people(80%) use the mobile for messaging. However, the next thing mobile is most used for is surfing the net(64%) which is surprising as computers are available. Moreover, the thing that the mobile is least used for is making time tables and projects.

When did you get your first mobile?

Inference: The winner is clear here. Most people(77%) got their first phone after 9th and rightly so

How did you get your first mobile?

Inference- The anecdotal point to be noted here is that quite a few people(16%) got a phone discarded by their parents as their first mobile!

How many handsets have you used since you got the first one?

0(3.84%)1(14.3%)2(17.7%)3(16.92%)4(14.61%)>4(32.3%)

Inference: Surprisingly, only 5 people(4%) have not changed their handset. In fact, most people(32%) have changed more than 4 handsets, which suggests that mobiles are frequently changed

What are the approximate monthly bill of the mobile usage that you are willing to afford?

0-150 Rs(15.9%

)

150-300 Rs(21%)

300-500 Rs(25.2%

)

500-1000 Rs(13.4%

)

>1000 Rs(29%)

0.00%

5.00%

10.00%

15.00%

20.00%

25.00%

30.00%

Inference: There is not much variation in the graph. However, a lot of people(29%) are ready to spend more than Rs 1000 which suggests that people do not worry much about the bill.

Do you feel your mobile phone has hindered your important work?

Inference: The results are interesting. Although most people are confident that their mobiles are not a nuisance, many people(36%) are in two minds about that. Quite a few(22.2%) even accept that their mobiles have hindered their work.

Has your phone got stolen/forgotten somewhere?

Inference: This result is quite astonishing. A pretty large number(42%) of people have lost their mobiles; a point of concern for the insurance company!

Do you use the following features of your mobile phone?

Inference: Video calling is not used by most people. GPS is used sometimes and m-commerce apps like bill payment are not used much. As expected, people always use a camera.

Do you use a 2g data connection or a 3g one in your phone?

Inference: Most people make use of 3g data, which suggests that people are looking for fast net speeds and are ready to spend more money than that for 2g data

Please rank the following applications in the order of your preference.

Inference: It is clear that the most preferred app is Whats app, followed by facebook and MX Player.Unexpectedly, people ranked photo editor app last. It shows that social networking sites are the most accepted ones.

Conclusion

The mobile that would interest people should have the following features:

1) Android run

2) Screen size of around 5 inches

3) Having good calling and messaging features and having a good network coverage.

4) May NOT be that sturdy as it will mostly not be used for many years.

5) Having good security settings and good tracking services as many people lose their mobiles.

Conclusion

6) Having a very good camera which can be compensated for video calling or GPS services.

7) MUST have 3g data connection

8) Modifying the whatsapp and facebook apps, which are most preferred, to suit the needs of the people

Thank

You!!
