4.4 Checking System [Refrigerant] Pressureand Electronic Leak Detection

1) Roll F3D3 unit out to disconnect power at outlet. [Pullplug.]

2) Position a stepladder or stable work platform to accessthe compressor/condenser compartment from the top.

3) Using standard manifold refrigeration gauges, securelyattach connectors to discharge & suction access valves.

4) Plug in unit. Turn ON Main Power Switch and allowcompressor to run for several minutes to stabilizepressures.

5) Using gauges, confirm the following pressures for unitswith a 16 oz. [454 gm] R404A charge:

Discharge Valve: 230 +/- 10 psig [16 1 Bar] @80F/27 C ambientSuction Valve: 5 +/- 2 psig [.4 .1 Bar] @80F/27 C ambient

6) If Discharge Valve pressure is HIGH and Suction Valvepressure is LOW, check for a kinked or restricted line.

7) If a kinked or restricted line is found, see Section 4.6 forExpansion Valve/Filter replacement.

8) If Discharge Valve Pressure is LOW and SuctionPressure is LOW, verify leak and location with anElectronic Leak Detector. [If existing system pressuresare high enough, a thorough scan with a standard leakdetector may be sufficient to locate the exact location.]

9) If system pressure is too low or leak(s) is/are intermittentand difficult to detect, recover any remaining refrigerantthen pressurize the system with nitrogen to an equalizedMAXIMUM of 150 PSIG [10.5 Bar]; per Section 4.4A

10) Use electronic leak detector or application of a soapsolution to locate any and all leaks.

11) IMPORTANT: Make sure the condensing unit is off whenchecking for leaks. Air movement from the fan wouldinhibit the ability of the leak detector to sense refrigerant.

12) If a leak is found, see Section 4.5 for Leak RepairProcedures.

4.4A Checking For Leaks Using Nitrogen

If a leak is very small or intermittent and difficult to detect, thesystem can be leak-checked by pressurizing with nitrogen.NOTE: Follow this procedure before checking for a leak in thecold wall Evaporator. See Section 4.4B for Evaporator.

1) Separate the high side from the low side by cutting thecopper lines going into the walls of the freezer cabinet.

2) Pinch and solder the cut lines on the high side or addadditional access fittings to pressurize the refrigerationsystem except the evaporator.

3) Solder access fittings to both sides of the evaporator(both lines coming up from the freezer cabinet wall).

4) To use an electronic leak detector, add a few ounces ofR-404A to act as a tracer gas.

5) Pressurize the high side and the compressor withnitrogen through access fittings to an equalizedmaximum of 150 PSIG [10.5 Bar]. IMPORTANT: A testpressure higher than 150 PSIG is not recommended forthe compressor shell.

6) Use an electronic leak detector or application of a soapsolution to locate any and all leaks. Places to checkcarefully include:

The pressure relief valveFittings and seams on the receiver tankAll solder jointsAccess fittings (with and without caps on)

7) If a leak cannot be found and the test pressure appearsto be steady, record the test pressure, plus roomtemperature and cabinet inside wall temperature.

8) Leave the unit pressurized for 24 hours.

Record Pressure & Temps. Initial After 24 HoursTest Pressure: PSIG/Bar PSIG/BarRoom Temperature: °F / °C °F / °CInside Wall Temperature: °F / °C °F / °C

9) Record the pressures and temperatures again at the endof the test period. A pressure drop of more than 10 PSIG[.7 Bar] within 24 hours indicates that there is a leaksomewhere and a more careful search is required.

4.4B Cold Wall Evaporator Leak Detection

NOTE: This procedure for leak detection should be usedwhen electronic detection or soap failed to locate a leak in thesystem. (See procedure 4.4 & 4.4A before using thisprocedure.)

IMPORTANT: Following this procedure and documentation oftest pressures may be required for warranty coverage.

1) After trying other leak detection methods, recover anyremaining refrigerant.

2) Separate the high side from the low side. Use a tubingcutter to cut the copper lines going into the cabinet walls.

3) Solder access fittings to both sides of the evaporator(both lines coming out of the cabinet wall).

4) Before pressurizing the low side, check for restrictions inthe evaporator tubing by blowing some nitrogen throughthe system. NOTE: Some oil is likely to come through sohave a rag ready. Clean oil has the consistency andappearance of water. Thick or discolored oil or othermaterial may indicate other problems in the system.

5) Pressurize the low side line to 250 PSIG [14.7 Bars]using nitrogen. Check for leaks at newly installed accessfittings and hose connections using soap bubbles. Alsocheck for leaks where lines go into the cabinet body.

6) After about 10 minutes, when system pressure is steady, record the test pressure. Also record room and cabinetinside wall temperatures:

Record Pressure & Temps. Initial After 24 HoursTest Pressure: PSIG/Bar PSIG/BarRoom Temperature: °F / °C °F / °CInside Wall Temperature: °F / °C °F / °C

7) Leave the unit pressurized for 24 hours.8) Record the pressure and temperatures again at the end

of the test period. A pressure drop of more than 10PSIG [.7 Bar] within 24 hours indicates there is a leakin the evaporator.

9) If an evaporator leak is clearly indicated, contactFranke Technical Support for assistance.
